I've just rewatched the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. I always love it. (Along with their wonderful version of Lady Chatterleys Lover by DH Lawrence.)

I really do feel I'm living in the wrong era.

Now we live in a world of fleeting interactions, text speak and we have no real concept of romance, nobility or even propriety at times. Of course there are many advantages to life as we know it, but I can't help but think we have also lost something.

Or maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic who is also a bit of a snob!

Are there any books or films that make you feel you are in the wrong place?

Do you mean the one with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle..? It was fantastic..! I watch it every so often as it’s so well made and a classic.

To answer your question, I would like to live in a simpler time and I sometimes think about the era of the film The Quiet Man. But I’m lazy and would miss my modern comforts..!

The contrast between Mr Bennet and Mrs Bennet is fantastic. And I love how he is so witheringly dismissive at times

Chesterfield

I think it probably was a golden age for Britain, but these dramas tend to show a rose-tinted view of society.

Remember that the Bennets & co. are some of the richest in society. It was an era of grinding poverty and social injustice for many.

Also, although women were possibly treated better than today they had little opportunity and no equality. The reason women in these things are so keen to get married is because they couldn't own anything or inherit until they did. Even then they were still legally their husband's property.

Plus women would be expected to be dutiful, chaste and obedient. Are you ok with that?

Oh I know all that and sadly it's unlikely I'd have been in high society. Even in the modern world I wasn't a very good wife because I was chasing a career and trying to have it all. Its just the romantic notions of it all. Poetry and courtship. It would be nice if some of those things still happened today

Tbh I think a lot of men would try romance etc. if it was appreciated. However they are afraid of being open to ridicule or looking weak.
