Chelmsford

Apparently Artificial Intelligence both in films and in reality are too white, non inclusive and racist.

Robots look white with white accents..

Who would have thought ...

I did see something the other week on my linkedin feed about AI being racist

They say its mainly to do with the reference material the AI is learning from being racist and it then unnknowingly learns the same racist tendancies

C-3PO was gold. I think that makes him in a protected minority.

Under the Duvet

If the majority of people working on AI are from one ethnic background then the AI they create will be skewed by there bias, be it conscious or unconscious.

I wouldn't have thought that would be much of a suprise?

It is easy to ridicule this if you don't understand AI

Microsoft launched Tay, a robot to chat and learn on Twitter. Within 16 hours it had gone from 'humans are cool' to comments about Hitler being right and hating feminists and wishing they would burn. Admittedly this seems to be because it was deliberately targeted by trolls but it shows just how quickly AI can pick up our biases.

Amazon tried to get AI to sift job applicants - it was given CV's and the subsequent jobs of Amazon staff as well as those who failed in their applications to learn from. They had to abandon it because they couldn't get rid of it's sexist bias - having an all girl college on your CV for example gave you a lower score. This was 'learnt' from Amazons own behaviour.

The US justice system tried to use AI to get rid of bias in sentencing, again, what it learnt from was historical sentence data with the result it ended up with a significant racial bias and had to be abandoned.

AI learns from the data that is input, much as human babies do. Given that much of the data humans have produced is sexist and racist, it isn't surprising that AI is too - or that humans are without even realising it.
