Most people that say this generally do it with good intentions, misguided as it may be.

"If people make me feel uncomfortable why on earth should I comply, and not make them feel uncomfortable lol, fuck them " I'm not sure anyone has suggested you should comply, maybe I've missed a comment? I think they were saying people weren't doing it to be intentionally rude. Although we are all generalising, it's not like we are all talking about the same specific instance or situation, just the general types of situation that these phrases are used, maybe if we were watching a vid of a particular instance of this, consensus might be different. People may be picturing the same thing but at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of how they imagine the interaction to play out.

"If it is men telling women to smile then it is usually about control, even if their intention is to cheer them up. Much of the reasons why are not in conscious awareness. Women were traditionally expected to be subservient and there for a man’s pleasure. They were expected to smile and not draw attention to themselves. It is much more likely that a woman will be told by a man to smile than the other way around. There are lots of ways to brighten someone’s day, but demanding a smile isn’t one of them." For info, if a mod asked people to go back to the OP it means something has kicked off , it is taking a thread a different way and the mod wants people to go back to the fun thread that it was meant to be. For future reference, questioning a mods decision is not allowed on the forum, use the contact button to do this or you may find yourself falling foul of the rules

"Random men haven’t told me to ‘smile!’ in months Before I post on this thread I wanted to clarify is it about one upside of wearing a mask or about men telling women to smile? It would be helpful to know before I respond to the thread? I think it's about women getting unwanted attention from men and often when they feel at their most vulnerable.. I’m slightly confused then as to why Ruggers said ‘Back to the OP’? It looks like you are questioning a mods decision ( which is against rules )but wording it this way to make it look like you are not. For info, if a mod asked people to go back to the OP it means something has kicked off , it is taking a thread a different way and the mod wants people to go back to the fun thread that it was meant to be. For future reference, questioning a mods decision is not allowed on the forum, use the contact button to do this or you may find yourself falling foul of the rules" I wasn’t sure Ruggers and I wanted to check what HMQL’s OP was about. Whether it was a more serious subject or some fun. I realised it could be interpreted in both ways. I wasn’t questioning you as I wasn’t on the thread when you posted it and didn’t know if something had happened and posts were removed. I was asking for clarity so I could post appropriately,

"Maybe the guy asking you to smile fancied you, but really wanted to clinche the deal when he saw your beautiful smile. I’ve said “smile gorgeous” to ladies in the past, it’s not a demand, not an order, an your right I don’t know what their mood or circumstances are, but maybe and I do mean just maybe, i find it pleasurable to see ladies smile (in fact I like to see everyone smile) but that’s just me, each to their own. " So we should smile to make you happy? Have you ever asked a man to smile?

" I think it is not a case of each to their own in this case. I think unconsciously when we do it we are doing it for ourselves not for the other’s benefit. It is trying to control their behaviour for our own pleasure. I would imagine many women experience the behaviour as sexist.

I’d prefer social interactions rather than people never interacting for fear of being accused of being “creepy”. I’m me, you’re you. We are different.

People have said it to me before and I'm a man. I do find it annoying though.

There are lots of ways to brighten someone’s day, but demanding a smile isn’t one of them." "It's about control" I really don't think it is.... In fact I find that notion ridiculous lmao You can't ascribe motives to people just because it fits your world view. And plenty of women say it aswell, to both men and women.
