Shark off Yourkshire

Experts had to put a large shark to sleep off the Yorkshire Coast.

These buggers swim ever closer to our shores probably because of sea temperatures rising. Either that or more food found in shallower waters. I no longer swim in the sea. Too risky....

It was a basking shark. Hardly anything to be scared of, unless you're plankton.

It was only put down because it was ill and it was the humane thing to do.

More shark propaganda Tom.

I've never heard of one one the east coast before, I know they move down the west coast and you can swim with them off Cornwall ( second biggest fish in the sea ).

Only worry if seals are close by....big things like to eat seals

Up on them there hills

Was fishing off the Welsh coast with a friend in a six foot dingy.

A basking shark swam by about ten feet away, first thing that came to mind was, “we need a bigger boat”.

They are enormous.

Some are strongly venomous & have incredibly painful bites like the bullet ant. I don't think the venom is deadly from just one - there's a guy who intentionally allowed various insects to sting him & rated/ranked them - but I'd imagine disturbing a nest would get them swarming all over you, so if a huge amount of venom didn't kill you, the pain probably would.

Nobody was saying they were in the UK.

However, anything in large enough volume is deadly.

Such as water.

You're far more likely to drown swimming in the sea than get a gumjob from a docile shark.

This isn't an issue for you to worry about.

If there is 1 jellyfish here we know full well it's about to become a plague of them that invade the waters around my island, almost like a wall of GIANT orbies stopping the ships etc, unlike the baskings, stingray, conger eels, dolphins and even the odd whale that really don't want to be an issue, the March of the jellyfish army is second only to China

I wonder if sharks are like crocodiles and can change their diet. A human can be a meat eater one day and a vegan the next.

What if this vegan shark became a meat eater...

Shark attack on humans are incredibly rare. The movie Jaws whipped up a frenzy of fear about them which is not warranted.

You're seriously saying the shark would be the one at fault? Thats like saying someone entering your home, that you haven't invited, has right of way

At the end of the day, sharks are predators - if you look tasty their going to eat you!

Even if you don't look tasty, just interesting, they haven't got hands to explore with, just huge sharp tetth. But I guess that's scaremongering.
