Remember Mary Whitehouse

What would she think of us today? Mary Whitehouse campaigned against liberal sexuality that we take for granted today and advocated against the 'permissive society' seen on TV by telling the public which pornographic movies were coming on TV. Some say she just encouraged more people to watch it by advertising what was coming on. What were your thoughts at the time, and would she be more popular with her activism if she were alive in 2020?

We laughed at her at the time. If she was alive now she would have exploded with righteous indignation and moral outrage .

Naked Attraction would about finish her off

I can't imagine Mary Whitehouse paddling in her pink canoe to Naked Attraction.

Somebody would have to explain to her what a cunt is. She has probably never seen one before, unless you count that Arthur scargill on the tv...

No doubt she would have been horrified.

She was fighting a losing battle. Society has become progressively more Liberal for hundreds of years and will continue to do so. There was way she and her supporters could have stemmed the tide.

People who want things to never change are invariably disappointed.

A fucking busybody who should never have been given the publicity she did to stick her nose into other peoples business. What the fuck did it matter to her want other people did. I was really pleased when the porn industry got their own back with naming a top shelf girly mag Whitehouse.

Cheshire

She had an opinion and rather sit back and complain to her Family and Friends about it, she went out and campaigned what she was against. She didn’t do it violently, put her case forward, found others (especially the church) and was successful in getting heard.

I may absolutely disagree with her point, society was becoming more liberal and forward thinking. So obviously that would be reflected in future programming. But I do admire her courage and fortitude, she took a lot of shit and never allowed it to break her.

So RIP Mary you are still a flawed hero to me

Gravesend

She was instrumental in creating the nine o clock watershed and thereby gave younger children the space to not be bombarded with adult situations on the telly .. she'd probably be campaigning against east Ender's Corrie and Emmerdale story lines .. which I don't think is a bad idea..as for the other more adult content of late shows ..I'm sure they would be grateful for the free publicity

Central

She eas out of step with her culture then but got much roo much influence upon millions of peoples lives via censorship. The 60s showed how she was an anachronism from the former years of empire but she constrained the 70s, 80s and to some extent, still today, with prudishculture and how TV and films are restricted. She kept the UK porn light years behind Sweden etc, so we've struggled to catch up with adult licensing that has been standard in other countries for decades.
