Not so much the word, but the intonation behind how it’s said. Mostly because it’s used as a form of abuse. But that also goes for the term skinny. X

Not personally, but it may upset some?

I was a skinny kid. I remember a girl laughing at my skinny legs in jeans and calling me names. I was really self conscious as a teenager and really uncomfortable around girls as I suddenly found out what impact others opinions of me could have.

Sometimes your opinion is just that...yours? So hold onto it?

I always got (and still get) that I have a pretty face, just need to lose weight as I’m a bit fat, and that has been from my dads family to friends. I don’t get why not being as slim as them means they can call me fat and think it’s acceptable. The mind boggles at how some people behave, but something physical is the easiest thing to grab onto and use to bully xx

Not by the word itself. It’s mostly used as an insult though, to try and make folk feel ashamed for the way they look. To try and make folk feel repulsive and insignificant because that’s how other folk think you should feel if you don’t fit in with society’s ideals of what is attractive.

It’s like “Urgh you’re FAT!” Not “Oh. You’re fat.”

But you learn to live with it.

Hopefully fuller figured doesn't offend, because I should go and hide now if it does.

It's difficult to know person to person who finds "fat" offensive and who doesn't. I certainly wouldn't use it as an insult, but wouldn't want to cause offence to anyone by saying it. For that reason I would avoid saying it whatsoever.

Now, as a fat bird I have no problem with the word fat. It's less clinical than morbidly obese...

However, I would never call someone fat or skinny, as people have their own labelling systems and that is just fine. Its a bloody minefield of how to address people really.

This is the lie we have been told since the 1970s and the reason for so much obesity now. We also eat high contest fatty meat, lots of dairy , raw unpasteurised full fat milk , real butter etc , it helps us keep weight off not on. Anything that says low fat on it , is just full of sugar or carb, or cheap nasty rubbish

Because they are not bad for you at your age and stage in life. We all have varying hormonal and metabolic differences. The only time I can lose weight is by upping proteins and lowering carbs (polycystic ovaries).

I’ve tried diets but I’m a chef and it just don’t work when I see that piece of beef or double cream !

Beef and cream don't make you fat, it's the carbs you eat with it.

I live on fatty meat and dairy, lost a huge amount of weight and kept it off for 12 years.

I can cook and do some catering occasionally but I'd love to have your knowledge to make some epic keto meals.

I always find the carb theory is an interesting one, as I’d say 80% of my diet is carbs and I’ve always been a healthy weight (at times in my 20s underweight). If carbs are so bad, why am I not fat?

Because they are not bad for you at your age and stage in life. We all have varying hormonal and metabolic differences. The only time I can lose weight is by upping proteins and lowering carbs (polycystic ovaries). "

True. I wonder if there’ll come a point where I just pile the weight on with all the day crap I eat. People told me it would happen at 30... 35 and still dodging it!

The same reason as why I can eat totally healthily with tight portion control, exercise regularly and still get fatter or just stay fat... We are all different and so are our bodies and how they do stuff.

Yeah I totally get that. Hence why I don’t understand these sweeping statements re how bad carbs are. It seems to come up a lot....

Probably because mostly only people who have to even think much about their carb intake are those who have to limit them or at least find limiting them really helpful.

Thank you, that's kind of you to say. I just find it upsetting when people feel the need to message me about the fact that I'm a little overweight- as though I don't already know that. "

What, an ounce overweight? You have a lovely body. I'd swap in a heartbeat

The only carb that is "bad" is (refined) sugar, it is totally unnecessary as carbohydrates contain sugars.

Choose either high carbs or high fat. A combination of the two where they are both high, which is what most people eat, is the option which leads to fat storage.

I get rather annoyed when people call other people names for the hell of it or feel that they can comment on something in a shitty way.

Nobody knows what anyone has or is going through at any stage of their life.

If you've nothing nice to say then keep it shut but people can't.

I'm coming to the conclusion thst some people are twats.

"Are you offended by the word fat, if you are fat?"

I'm offended by people using them as insults. No one ever had the right to comment on another person's size or weight. It's no one else business and something that gets right up my nose.

My size has changed recently and I've actually had messages pointing it out, as if I don't know???

Some people are just horrible and there's no need for it. I was always taught

I am fat, I don't get offended easily, so would not be "offended"

However, is someone chose that word amongst others to describe me, or try call me it as an insult, they would't exactly be on my fuck it list

I call myself fat as that's what I am. I get told off then by people for putting myself down.

I'm not putting myself down I'm saying it as it is.

If someone described themselves as skinny or slim no one would call them out for being too nice about themselves

Bit of an eye opener for me. This thread shows what a broad spectrum 'fat' can cover. There are some I would never even consider using that word for but they see themselves differently.

You say it's no-one else's business, well when I return to work I want to make it my business to help educate or refer people to make informed choices about their "fatness". I know many are defensive about their weight and will respond as though being approached is offensive. But I want to help those who want to be helped. I cannot exactly wear a neon sign on my head stating I come without judgement. Therefore, unintentionally I'm going to be putting peoples' noses out of joint.

If people asked for help with their weight one way or another, then it's different. People shouldn't be commenting on it freely though.

Is it okay for someone I didn't know to tell me I'm too skinny? I was sick and struggling as it was, it was the last thing I needed to hear. Is it okay for people who I've never met to point out I've gained weight or that I have wobbly bits? No, it's none of their business. Context is everything.

Absolutely agree to context. Also agree to person's level of knowledge also (such as the low level GPS have and are meant to advise).
