So, according to this mornings news, Diesel fuel is now 'conclusively' a cause of cancer. Why has it taken so long to discover this, assuming its not just more government propaganda to encourage cleaner fuel. Or is it another excuse to simply raise taxes on fuel?

Thoughts......?

Its the govenment at work again drip feeding us bollox so they can tax us some more for driving diesel powered vehicles in the near future. Diesel engines now are a 1000 times more efficient than they was when I used to walk to school in the 70s when old busses drove past and you couldnt see them because of the shit that came out of the back of them and now all of a sudden they are deemed cancerous and dangerous.

Maybe this will be the incentive to get car manufacturers to design efficient particulate filters...

I have to laugh my arse off at this because it has been a proven fact that benzine is carcinogenic and it is contained in both petrol and diesel that's why its best avoided with skin contact. However only petrol emits unburned chemicals while diesel only emits hydrocarbons and water. The facts are interesting if you look into them and have been public knowledge since the 1970's

well the funny thing about this is when they last did the tests for diesel in 1989... it was on the "probable" list of things that could cause cancer.. so its just gone one up the list....

the interesting thing for me, how the different media outlets have reported this...

daily mail went "sensationalist"... BBC and the guardian when with "scientific but we all probably knew this would happen eventually....."

I know a bloke that's recovered from cancer 3 times. Whenever he fills his car up with diesel he uses the gloves provided. If there are no gloves he kicks off because apprantly its law gloves should be there because of how harmful diesel is. Just what I've been told. Don't know if fact or not

So the fuel used to power aeroplanes that float in the atmosphere isn't bad for us? Or the fuel to send shuttles into space?

The fuel used to power, power stations is safe?

The radiation emanating from computer monitors, pc towers, televisions, mobile phones etc etc is all good for us and doesn't affect us?

The additives in food and drinks that we don't need are safe for us?

We all know they're not good for us but we have become accustomed to using them all day, every day.

In my opinion that's why there is a major cancer issue.

Many reasons, take tomorrow for exapmle; starting in Stockport ... I've a meeting in Crewe at 9.00am, one in Widnes at 11.30 and then if time allows a meet at 1.00 ... back to office in Manchester for 4.00pm, gym at 7pm, home in Stockport for 9pm .... I love my car!

Sunshine is bad for us, causes cancer so we slap the factor 50 on the kids and keep them out of the sun and there is an upswing in the cases of rickets (to be completely fair this is also down to the switch from whole milk to Semi Skimmed as the fats aid absorption of vitamin D).

Burning stuff is bad for us… diesel, petrol, tobacco, wood…. But raw chicken will kill ya quicker

Bottom line is bad news reporting is what is really bad for us, WHO publish a document then the papers look for the most sensationalist bit of it and start scare mongering, it’s quite simple really, everything will kill you if you do it in extremes, but if you do most things in balance you can live a good life before it gets you…

Second that sentiment, we're a long time dead. I wanna head through the pearly gates in a fireball, with models on my arm and a pint in me hand with a big feckin smile on my face not wrapped up in cotton wool, all healhy and bored to tears because I've cut all the fun but not very good for you things out of my life.

its been said in the industry for years that you should wear gloves while fuelling your truck as having a pee with diesel on your hands is contributary to testicular cancer. there is a higher rate of it in truck drivers than other vocations.

so i have it doubly bad as i drive a diesel too lol

Here and there

Crude oil and it's derivatives have been widely considered as being highly carcinogenic for a long time.

That said, if you were to inject 100 rats full of lemonade every day for whatever standard period of time these tests are done over, there would be a high enough number that develop cancer to call it a carcinogen so I wouldn't worry too much. Just don't drink it or bathe in it and you'll be fine.
