New Regime

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest

I've embarked on a new dietary regime to help reclaim (partially at least!) the form I had a few years ago.

All sugar is gone. Virtually no carbs. No crisps! No crackers. Just greens, eggs, nuts, meat, fish, cheese. Limited fruit.

Three days in and it's been a struggle to not have coffee with sugar and the fresh bread in the supermarket today might as well have been screaming at me for attention

All this in conjunction with intermittent fasting.

Who's done similar and how hard did you find it initially? I've heard tales of people literally having tremors and migraines from the sugar withdrawal alone

Three days in it's not too bad, but you never know!

I’ve tried juicing the last couple weeks. Had mixed success on and off. Not too bad in the morning and lunch, dinner/nighttime’s hard. As is staying away from a beer when the footies on!

I’ve succumbed more than once!

I'm certainly looking at some juicing to complement this regime and am actually browsing online for juicers

I just eat healthy and exercise. Lost over a stone in 7 weeks. I don’t like diets where you have to cut out certain food groups. I don’t think it’s healthy to do that. Sorry

Used to hate the period of strict dieting before a competition years ago. Reduced carbs made me cranky. These days i just eat whatever i like and try and exercise enough. Never going to look like i did in my twenties. But hey I'm getting older and don't really care anymore!

I've had to follow a strict diet due to irritable bowel, following medical advice, found it to be great, carbs, sweets, processed stuff no more. Withdrawal was tough for the first three days then it was manageable after that. Good luck OP

Just keep reducing the sugar rather than go cold turkey. After a while you won't want it. I did the same with chocolate. It doesn't bother me now. In fact that aisle in the supermarket makes me feel a bit queasy when I walk down it!

I cut out carbs and did gentle IF for three weeks and lost just over a stone and felt so much better for it. And then when I ate a burger my tummy ballooned and I remembered that as much as I love eating that sort of food, probably best I really limit it. I feel so much better when I do. I've got a goal for renewed weight loss - I'm going to a night with a friend and have seen the PVC dress of my dreams but it requires serious work. Just not today.

I’ve done the hormone diet and I’m starting it properly tomorrow! Pretty much what your eating but not cows milk or cheese! Last time I had done it the first week was hard but I lost 5 lb but I tried to do a second week of it and couldn’t manage it! So this time I’m only doing I week of it then adding a few carbs the second and 3rd week!

I do train quite hard to and you shouldn’t do so much physical activity only walking etc so it’s super difficult for me!

I've cut out cakes, biscuits etc. but kept sugar in my coffee. I've found "Livlife seriously seeded" bread in Waitrose. It has only half the carbs of normal bread. Replaced potatoes, rice, pasta by salads (lettuce, tomato, cucumber etc.) but still have some of each once a week. Reduced the portion sizes of all meals as I've realized they were way too big.

And daily exercise of course.

The changes are not too drastic so easier to keep up with. Having said so I still have a "fall of the wagon" day about once in two weeks when I don't exercise and stuff myself with junk food and any sweets I can get hold off.

Maybe go a bit easier on your regime.

I think sometimes it's best to add restrictions incrementally so as to not simultaneously deprive ourselves of too much? I opted not to as I know I can handle it and can exercise sufficient self restraint.

Supplementing this with increased weight training and a high daily protein intake.

The die is cast

Sounds too extreme for me. I always cave if I'm too restrictive like that. I'm currently two weeks into a kind of version of intermittent fasting where I'm varying my calories through the week and I allowed myself a 97 calorie jaffa cake bar yesterday and still stayed under 1200 calories! I'm 4 pounds down so far. And I just had pizza . Mostly eating fish, eggs, soup, rice cakes and veggies the rest of the time though.

Keto definitely works. I can't really keep it up for more than about 6 weeks though. It's good as a kick start or in the run up to a big event or holiday though.

I did a detox diet a couple of years ago - basically nothing but certain lean proteins, cruciferous vegetables, and certain fats for 10 days. I had a headache for the entire time, and was crankier than last time I stopped smoking - but I lost 11lb.

You'll have to do a photo shoot to showcase the fruits of your endeavours

I put on a shedload during the first couple of months of the lockdown, due mostly to breakfasts that lasted 90 minutes, and a lack of physical activity. I tried a variety of diets and 5/2 type regimes before settling on IF. I’m now doing 20/4 and the weight is falling off without having to calorie count. I find it really easy, and it totally suits me.

I’ve done loads of different diets before, I’d ideally like to get back to the size I was last March. Size 8, since November I’ve literally only put on 7lb but as I’ve not been exercising other than sex, I’ve lost muscle mass.

I’ll get it back though in a healthy way

I did something similar back in 2016 after I hit 16 stone 10lbs. A similar approach using 5 and 2 diet intermittent fasting and an intense gym routine saw me lose 4 stones in just over 17 months and changed my body shape dramatically. Maintaining that when my business took off was too much of a challenge and although I’ve lost weight again during lockdown I need to follow your example and hit it hard again when the gyms reopen next week. It’s a struggle though so I kind of know what you mean.

"I've embarked on a new dietary regime to help reclaim (partially at least!) the form I had a few years ago.

I cant do no or very low carbs.

My sugar intake is low but overall carbs are 500-600g a day.

I've tried various approaches in how I eat in order to try and find an edge in my powerlifting. No or very low carbs had the biggest effect in terms of strength loss and overall gym performance. I was weak as shit.

4500 calories a day without carbs is near impossible.

I can see how in your case you couldn't deprive yourself of carbs to do what you do.

I've specific goals in mind where carb reduction is essential.

If you work out and eat well, no need to be afraid of carbs and fruit. I eat meat, carbs, veg and fruit with every meal and i don't do no fasting malarkey.

I've been at clean eating for the last 4 weeks, back in the (outdoor) gym for the last two and I'm already making good progress.

Theres way more too it than just weight.

Look up TOFI (thin outside, fat inside) and what your liver does when you eat fruit.

If I followed your diet I'd be very fat and very sick very quickly.

Thanks and honest, I was one of those people who scoffed at giving up carbs, impossible I'd say, stupid idea! Now I see them not only as nutritionally devoid but actually damaging.

I watch others food behaviours and recognise they are addicted too because that's exactly what I used to do.

Take a look at teamrh on Facebook. They are really good no bullshit advice. Reducing carbs is really not good for you. You'll only end up binging and putting all the weight back on when you start eating normally again.

Teamrh will help you bulk as well when you get to that stage. If you can take the bad language he gives out then you will find following him loads of fun.

Up North

I did it a few years back and stuck to it and didn’t miss sugar one bit.

Having had COVID recently though my energy levels have dropped significantly and I started to introduce sugar back into my diet as a quick fix. I’m finding now that this sugar rush is helping with my fatigue. Hopefully when all this passes I will remove it from my intake and stick to a strict and healthy diet.

Processed sugars, eggs, cheese, dairy, snacks, bread I’d quite happily give up

I think I’d personally struggle with no carbs, only greens and limited fruit. I love my raw veg / salad (no dressing) with some pasta, rice or new potatoes and then add my protein. Fruit I eat daily, a lot of it whether it’s frozen then blended with apple / orange juice, kale, spinach or just straight out the fridge.

I was doing low carb combined with alternate day fasting for a couple of months and lost 2 stone. I then got diet fatigue and it was getting harder to keep it up (the fasting portion anyway) so I switched to WW 2 weeks ago, thinking maybe the secret to my diet success would be to switch it up every couple of months.

WW allows you to eat carbs which means I've gained 2lbs this week even though I stuck to my points religiously!

So I am going fully keto come Monday (have a couple of occasions this weekend so bad time to start). I'll be doing intermittent fasting this time though instead of going every other day without food.

Changing dietary habits and eating routines isn't easy. Some struggle with more than others due to a multitude of factors.

I think the 24h fasting is a bit too extreme for most people. The 16/8 one i'm on i've found brilliant. Actually foregoing breakfast has made me more energetic and alert in the morning, which surprised me

As a fellow foodie with a sweet tooth, I admire your tenacity. I believe it's mostly down to how we think, and I know you believe you can do it, so you will.

The first two weeks are supposed to be the worst. It'll be easier after that.

I went cold turkey and proved to myself I could last the fortnight, then decided the afterglow of a good sugar fix was something I really wasn't prepared to lose from my life.

16/8 was just my normal eating pattern. If anything its more like 18/6. To fast any more than I normally do I've just been having a snack around 3pm and dinner on fasting days.

Exactly this

Strongly advice not to go full keto

I eat a medium lowish carb balanced nutritional diet habitually

I only use an extreme version

Like keto when below 11 percent bf and I feel like cutting to a very low percentage

For anyone wanting to lose bf

Note I day bf not weight

Especially above 18 percent bf

Slow and consistent calorie restrictions over months are the strategy

If any one aims to lose more than a kg per week for months they will usually fail

Find a group of foods you can eat below your bmr

Eat 200 to 500 cals less daily

Do not cut out food groups immediately

Nutrition is a life long engagement not a brief encounter

Want to lose a couple of stone plan for a year not hope for 6 weeks

Sad fact however

Alcohol is highly counterproductive

Cutting bread and the drug carbs (confectionery) is always highly effective

I was still allowed to eat up to 500 cals on my fasting days which was easy at first but after about 6 weeks I noticed I was slowly creeping up to 600, 700, 800 etc. I didn't want to slip back into my old eating habit so I thought the best thing to do was change my diet because I always have the most willpower and motivation at the start of a new regime.

I do 16/8 naturally so might just increase that a tiny bit or maybe do OMAD to get the full benefits of fasting (want to minimise loose skin as much as possible).

Do you use a food tracker they are vital

So if you have been low carb for a while its likely you can store 200 to 400 g of carbs

For each carb g you will also store 3 g of water

Thus 400 g of carb can become 1600 g of extra weight this can happen in a day yes

"

I was doing very low carb before (basically keto but still eating fruit) and on my eating days felt perfectly full because of all the fat I was eating. It was my fasting days that were hard because the hunger made me crave carbs, which is why I'm just going to do the intermittent fasting this time. I already do 16/8 naturally so I know it won't be hard. The only reason I didn't go full keto before was because I didn't want to have to kick myself out of ketosis and then wait 3 days to go back into it every time I wanted a cheat meal, but after feeling so upset about gaining weight after all my hard work this week I've realised maybe the cheat meals aren't worth it lol. Maybe once I lose more weight and can sustain on less calories I will try alternate day fasting again because I really noticed a huge difference in my skin and gut health when I was doing it

"For those who need bread I suggest home made sourdough bread

The carbs are reduced by the fermentation glycaemicly its lower and gives a flatter insulin response

I've heard this too. But....it's sourdough "

Exactly what a bonus the most amazing tasty crusty bread there is and its diet endorsed

Yey

Well done OP.

I have cut down the junk food and watch my carbs and fat intake. I still eat what I enjoy but all in moderation. I exercise 6 days a week, either PT sessions and/or cycling and walk everyday too. Made small changes too such as parking my car on the outskirts of town and walk to work.

I don't weigh myself too often as that is just a number, it's about how I look and feel.

I've lost a dress size in 8 weeks, and that includes me eating Indian takeaway, Chinese takeaway, fish and chips and chocolate. So I'm very happy with my progress so far.

"Good luck with it, I’m sure you’ll stick to it

Processed sugars, eggs, cheese, dairy, snacks, bread I’d quite happily give up

I think I’d personally struggle with no carbs, only greens and limited fruit. I love my raw veg / salad (no dressing) with some pasta, rice or new potatoes and then add my protein. Fruit I eat daily, a lot of it whether it’s frozen then blended with apple / orange juice, kale, spinach or just straight out the fridge.

Bread for me will be the big hurtle Mediterranean background and all that....we love our bread...in good quantity! "

I feel you! I'm from a French/Asian background so there is always a baguette and brie/camembert or curry in the house to tempt me!

The first two weeks are supposed to be the worst. It'll be easier after that.

If only I lived alone haha.

Saying that though there still a lot of yummy Mediterranean food you can have on no carb! Hummus, falafel, olives, tzatziki, roast veg with lots of olive oil... Is it lunchtime yet?!

"I was doing low carb combined with alternate day fasting for a couple of months and lost 2 stone.

16/8 was just my normal eating pattern. If anything its more like 18/6. To fast any more than I normally do I've just been having a snack around 3pm and dinner on fasting days. "

I'm surprised really at how easy it becomes

For anyone that's adopted a strict regime, do you rigorously count the number of calories, grams of protein, carbohydrates, etc? Or do you just eyeball it and keep the portions lower?

Are there any tracking apps for this?

Plenty of tracking apps for all dietary and fasting regimes. I don’t calorie or weight count. Fasting 20/4 and letting my body do the work.

I use my fitness pal. I scan the bar codes and either weigh things or work it out from the proportion of the packet. Some thinge already come up as calories per item which is handy.

For medical reason I have had to start being strict with my intake on everything. Mynetdiary is great for keeping track of it all and easy to use. Yes I am weighing everything but difficult when out so then it is guessing portion size. Along with a balanced healthy diet (not restricting one food type) and exercise bike lost over a stone in 7 weeks.

Still getting use to logging everything but it is helping the consultants keep track of it all so worth it

"I've embarked on a new dietary regime to help reclaim (partially at least!) the form I had a few years ago.

Well done! That’s more strict than I’d be able to manage!

So far i'm working out and adding up from the packaging.

I've done some research and to hit my objectives I need to consume close to 180g of protein a day (0.8g per pound of body weight), which is certainly more than i've been having on average.

I use this too - a handy feature is being able to store regular meals so you only have to add all the ingredients once, you can just choose that stored item every time you have it afterwards. It tells you how much protein/carbs etc is in things too

Are you finding mfp accurate? I find it frustrating as a lot of the calorie values of things I've logged have been completely wrong. I feel like it's good for a daily estimate though.

Also well done for losing 6lbs, that's amazing (although I think you look lovely as you are)

Pinch of Nom is not really a diet, it is more a way of healthy eating, Out have gone the prepacked processed food and the take aways. In has come fresh veg and herbs and seasonings. sensible portions controlled by recipe content. I was definitely eating too much. I still have a drink when I want, but have looked for my tipple that has less calories in it, Red Devon cider now instead of Magners, and a Chardonnay instead of Pinot Grigio.

The change has meant I dont need to go to the gym and battle away for hours on end. I can walk farther now and can use my ebike, yes an ebike so use minimum on the flat and get help on the hills. an hours riding looking at beautiful things has really helped me mentally

To some extent it's what i've been doing, especially cutting out all processed foods.

And yes, most change comes through diet and adequate sleep (which was an issue for me). I am hitting the gym hard as i'm going for body recomp; trimming fat and simultaneously gaining extra muscle. It's a tall order but I do relish a challenge

I recommend against

Hitting the gym hard

I recommend hitting the gym with a tailored workout program that focuses upon progressive overload principles

I recommend

Consistency way over intensity

5 half hour intelligent sessions sessions for years

Trump 2 75 90 min all out to failure sessions once a week for weeks
