So the council removed the new statue in Bristol this morning. It barely a day. They said it was erected without permission.

Should it have stayed or been taken down?

Taken down. It should be decided by the whole community what, if anything, goes there.

And especially not decided by someone who isn't from Bristol.

They could have left it there until a decision was made.

Now if it had the name Banksy attached to it, there would now be security around it and it would never be moved

We have planning permission for a reason if had to apply to the council to change my windows from wood to pvc then if people decide to erect a statue or whatever it was you have to consider is it fitting with the area is it safe does it meet certain regs building or planning so yes definitely taken down

It was never meant to stay, read the interview of the artist, it's clear he meant this to be a performance, happening, a PR coup. And it works, of all places on the internet, you are talking about it, thinking about it. From an artistic and communication perspective, I think they nailed it.

I don’t think it should have been put there the way it was and should have been removed. But totally agree it was a beautiful statue and I liked it too.

For what it's worth. I think it was arrogant and hypocritical to put it up.

You don't tear down a statue and then put your own up.

Its for the people to decide. The people already stated overwhelmingly they didn't want the statue. So I supported that. But then I'm for power to the people, not power to the mob wether it's a BLM mob or an EDL mob.

The bankys post did make me think so than you. But if banksy were to paint over another piece of art. Then I'd call it vain vandalism. And expect it to be removed.

The mayor of Bristol is black and he said it should have been taken down, so I don’t believe there was a racist element to this. I think there should be some sort of statue in the place of Edward Colston that recognises the transatlantic slave trade, but it shouldn’t be an activist hardly anyone’s heard of doing a black power pose. While on the subject, I am always baffled with the silence BLM has on the slavery of black people in Mauritania. 10% of the population is enslaved, the majority of them being black moors. BLM has never mentioned it, and this is slavery that’s still going on that could have something done about it. Instead, BLM seems to be more interested in Palestine. The politics of the organisation seems to be an extension of Corbynism in the UK, and is similar to Extinction Rebellion as well. The activism of today completely turns me off, it’s too divisive. You can’t on one hand ask others for help while attacking institutions the majority support, example being wanting to pull Churchill down. Most people in this country respect the role he played in WW2, so it seems a peculiar way of getting people on board.

If it were a car illegally parked and towed away then the owner would have to pay a charge to recover it which increases over time.. will a similar charge apply to the statue .. ?
