Personally I much prefer this era, as lovely as the bubonic plague was...

Good point well made.

Let’s say the recent past? The last 30 to 40 years?

A lot of the architecture of the last few decades is certainly awful

In my lifetime I have seen quite dramatic changes in social attitudes impacting on society. The poverty gap is getting bigger and the standard of social services is almost non existent.

And Hemel Hempstead, worst two places I’ve ever worked!

I love being in the Midlands even with the high UK tax i’d rather be based here, living is so cheap, Peak District and Sherwood Forest less than 1 hour , everywhere else is within 2-3 hours apart from the SW and work for companies in London and Cambridge so get the high salary’s and bonuses if the south

I've lived in many countries and there are things here we don't like mainly surrounding administaration in all its forms. Having said that you do feel fundamentally safe. Its good to experience other things to appreciate what you have !

I’m still continually awestruck by the beauty of this country, however the challenges of living now compared with when I was born appear worse in some ways and better in others. I have no real objective way of judging it, so I’ll just say the challenges are different.

Again an excellent point.

No, it isn't a less attractive place to live than 30 or 40 years ago. I'm not sure about the next ten years though

When I was growing up life seemed less mad.

That said I still love coming home to the UK from my travels?

Not all that North of North London

I love living in such a diverse country with such a rich mix of cultures. It just makes me sad that so many prefer to be intolerant than accepting of those differences.

Good and bad places everywhere...always has been. At the mo, I love where I live. UK in general? Don't like the drinking culture...drinking seems to be a badge of honour.

People say good old days they forget no central heating

Only cold running water you had to heat on stove for a bath

No bathrooms you used bath in the front room by the fire

No internet and probably unless your family were loaded no phone or tv

Selective memories, or picking and choosing the good bits but ignoring the bad is certainly extremely common with people who like to compare what it is like to love during different eras

No, a lot of things have improved and the overall standard of living has generally risen over the years.

Obviously some things have not improved, for example the cost of living is higher.

I think also as technology and travel have increased its easier for people to look at other places and think that they would prefer the lifestyle there.

I do think we take for granted living in a first world country sometimes though.

"Is it a less attractive place to live than in times gone by?"

Every era has its challenges. And the context is always different. I'd say it's much better than the 70s and early 80s though. Although too many still live in poverty and our divisions are still there.

Good and bad bits I guess, but what's the point in stressing about what you're dealt in life. Make the most of it and change it for the better...

Agree.

I think sometimes people with very little experience of living outside of the UK tend to bash it unfairly or concentrate on the negatives over the many many positives.

The UK isn't perfect, I doubt many places are.

However go live in a second or third world country for a few months and you might look at the things we take for granted here with new eyes.

Done three stints in challenging environments abroad. The sense of family community is a lot stronger than in the current uk climate. Materialistically they don’t have a pot in which to piss.

As the days go on... I'm starting to think why do people want to come to this shithole?....

Theres much nicer countries everywhere like Sweden, Germany, France or Spain... but they choose plain old England. ..

If I had the money I'd move to Sweden at the drop of a hat.
