Question for mechanics please.

Brizzle

My car is making a noise which is coming from the front, it’s like a spongy sound, It’s not a rattle & whine or a screech & if I was to hazard a guess sounds like a steering or suspension issue.

It happening all the time & even when I’m coasting with the ignition off, which tells me it’s not mechanical, I know this happens when a wheel bearing goes but already replaced one & in any case the noise is different.

I know it needs to be taken to a mechanic & driven but am very weary of being given misinformation.

Anybody any suggestions or things to try, to ascertain what it might be.

TIA.

Bounce up and down on the bonnet when it is parked up and see what it sounds like then and from where.

I hate cars but I am good at guessing noises now.

What car.

Year, make, model.

Little bit of history would be useful.

Does this sponginess happen on flat ground, over bumps, when your travelling at speed, when you brake?

Friend of mine did that... eventually his near side front wheel fell off going round a roundabout in Andover!

Im not a mechanic but if it happens when you coast perhaps its a loose under tray bit flapping down with airflow.

Well could be many things, could u give us more informations? Could be top strut mounting, especially if u have sound at when u turn on steering wheel, also check and tight wheel nuts

So the top strut mounting could be heard when the car is coasting?

"it’s a Citroen Picasso. "

There you go, you've diagnosed the issue yourself

It'll be the nut behind the wheel that's loose...

Take it to a mechanic we don't bite

Could be power steering pump pulley failing, possibly the belt starting to shred too. Does the noise/sound increase with engine revs or stay at a constant level?

Worthing

Don't take it too dealer (top prices) or the "fast fitting" places. Get a good independant who friends can recommend.

Probably top strut mount Which will move when turning wheel and it’s rubber hence why it maybe feeling spongy . Why are people so negative. If you don’t have an positive answer why answer Why waste your till and other people . Oh yea their lives are perfect so take piss out of other people’s misfortunes and nothing better to do !!!

Only a good mechanic can diagnose the problem. Suggest your nearest local independent garage rather than an official dealer. Would also avoid the nationals like Halfords or Kwik Fit. Good luck.

Would guess suspension. Shock or spring.

Hey sorry for delay...well that would be first thing to check, i change my strut and top mount because had same problem, try to listen when someone else turning steering wheel and also check if is spring broken

P.s. give us update if u find the problem

Whereabouts are you? I run a mobile mechanics business providing your not hundreds of miles away i could come and check.

Noises being described is hard to diagnose bit sounds like steering or suspension related.

Hi it’s a constant level, & even when the engine is switched off (coasting), it’s also noisy when the steering is turned left or right.

We have recently moved, been recommended a local garage, they are going to check it tomorrow. Will report back with findings.

Thanks for your help.
