What makes you reply privately to someone's thread comment? Other than involvement in thread games as that's a pretty obvious one.

Does the person commenting interest you?

Have you not figured the reply + quote option?

Are you one who replies to every single comment no matter how pointless?

Don't think I've ever used that option. Never seen the point in a forum thread. Yeah, sure, message people privately, but not about a thread subject.

I very rarely do it, but when I do it's either someone I know (and usually a joke or piss taking about their post), or it's something that's particularly resonated with me that I don't necessarily want to discuss on an open forum.

I’ve still yet to master the reply + quote button, hopefully one day, but until then I will PM people. I only ever chat to people who intrigue me, if I don’t chat to you I am at best ambiguous about you, at worst ambivalent. Those words were on my word of the day toilet roll. But seriously I only chat to one women, mainly cause she looks like Nigella, she both intrigues me and Encapsulates emotions in me, emotions I’ve never felt before, a wistful longing for a time I wasn’t part of but somehow I miss.

I have and do fairly often, have used it when I want to offer support about things I'd rather not discuss publicly. Used in domestic abuse threads in the past.

I've done it a couple of times and had people message me about my comments. Sometimes it just seems appropriate and people can be reticent for various reasons to post publically. I don't mind it at all and it does have its own button

We will only do it if someone has specifically mentioned us or if there is a comment which we'd like to discuss privately. It's rare.

Mostly we get single men messaging us asking about our responses or what we've discussed I.e would I like to peg them, would I like them to do xyz... To the point I've stopped interacting so much as it's unwelcome attention

I was just going to say that. Great minds think alike with my lovely friend Lily. I was fortunate enough to be reminded don't trust openly no matter what sob story I get with online strangers.

I very rarely do the private thing though with new people that have not actually met me in person. It is usually because they ask me for help knowing what type of person I am in the forums, but once my good nature has been taken advantage of or manipulated in private... it ends right there and I soon find myself back on track again amongst real friends #HappyTrail

Is probably easier to say what I don't use it for, which is as a reason to try and talk to someone uninvited.

The reasons I use it, on the occasions I use it, are many and variable but never as a means to an end.

A lot of the reasons already mentioned above. Generally because they've said something that interested me or I've agreed vigorously with and don't want to derail the thread, but sometimes because I fancy someone and their reply in the forum would be an excellent ice-breaker.

I use it as an excuse to slide into someone’s DMs, mostly.

Sometimes it’s just because I have a question that’s sort of related to a specific post but I don’t want to derail a thread

Threads are locked at 175 comments a thread if it’s one comment back and forth then i will use the replay quote but if I think it could brake out in to a full convo then I will message privately as I don’t want to bog the thread and have it locked
