just opened a letter from the department for work & pensions.

it starts "we previously contacted you about the money you owe, £117.20"

well knowing nothing about this i spent nearly 2 hours on the phone mostly waiting for them to answer.

it turns out, i underpaid something or other in

APRIL I989 and now they are threatening court action ffs after 23 feckin years

I'd question how reliable their computer records were in 1989!!!

Also i'd threaten them with the freedom of information act and request all of your records going back to that date.....hopefully they will poop their pants and realise that it's more than their time is worth.

Just be a pain in the arse to them.

I had a letter couple of months from someone taking me to court for £22 in about 1998 when i phoned them didnt owe it at all.

you should pay up without question .

As everyone knows the goverment never ever makes mistakes so it must be folk like you that have brought the country to the edge yet again .

What a complete waste of time and moeny chasing this it's only going to pay for 1 hour of the folk taking you to court and the tax payer will pay the rest.

Give these people proper jobs or get rid of them and let normal hard working folk get on with their lives .

I thought they were only aloud to go back a max of 7 years anyway.

Sorry for the rant

the inland revenue are unfortunately a law unto themselves. They can go back as far as they like. I would speak to citizens advice, a solicitor or trade union before paying though. If you were on paye it wasn't fraud but someone else's mistake. You may get leniency but don't hold your breath.

wasn't meaning pay up

it was supposed to be sarcastic

its unbelivable how the goverment will chase pennies but if you owed them millions they bail you out.

tis ok no worries .

Wound up after driving from aberdeen to aboyne todays olympic flame route.

No parking cones in every village and town for the 50 miles

street sweepers and leaf blowers along the whole route and police guarding car parks so nobody can park to near the flame.

What a total waste of money and time.

there is a limit... but only for tax ... it turns out it was a mistake by the department for work and pensions (as they now call themselves) for a very short, and once only, period of unemployment (was waiting for a new job to start) and over the period of 3 weeks, they paid me too much

they now want it back OR ELSE

I am pretty sure it is a 6 year limit on any debt not claimed within that time.

I got a letter from Tax people a couple of weeks ago wanting me to pay them £1135.67 for alleged overpayment of child benefit - I rang and asked wtf they were on about. I said I can't owe that much as they alleged that overpayment 9 years ago and I wouldn't be receiving anything from them until they'd clawed back through my tax code. The original sum they say they overpaid was........................£1135.67!! So what the hell have they been fannying about at for the last 9 years??Needless to say I told them exactly what they could do with their demands. 'You can't say that sir' was the reply - my answer to that was 'I already have, so now sod off and leave me alone!!' I wouldn't pee on a taxman if I found him/her on fire. grrrrrrr
