"Created with the aim of sharing information, to educate and illuminate, to gain a greater understanding of man and science; regrettably appearing only to make many people more closed minded and dare I say stupid, capable of both good and bad."

The internet was originally created as either a way of accessing the few very powerful computers available in the USA without being near them or as a Command & Control system which would survive a nuclear war. The earliest incarnation of the internet was ARPANet in 1968.

The World Wide Web - which runs on the internet - was first intended as a way for scientists across the world to easily share information.

Conflating the WWW with the internet is a common misunderstanding. The internet is the network. The WWW is a service which runs on the network.

I find it difficult to rein myself in sometimes and I don't the rule is a hard and fast one.
