The internet was originally created as either a way of accessing the few very powerful computers available in the USA without being near them or as a Command & Control system which would survive a nuclear war. The earliest incarnation of the internet was ARPANet in 1968.

The World Wide Web - which runs on the internet - was first intended as a way for scientists across the world to easily share information.

Conflating the WWW with the internet is a common misunderstanding. The internet is the network. The WWW is a service which runs on the network.

I find it difficult to rein myself in sometimes and I don't the rule is a hard and fast one.

Mine still works with good recovery speed and faster genuine connections once you get rid of the old skool ones. They used to be real dodgy and cut out. Full power will be restored soon.
