If you hate your smile or find it looks like a rictus in selfies its probably because you overdo the smile part and your face gets tired and less spontaneous (or 'real' smile).

To improve it...Set all the crap in the photo, background lighting your position etc without smiling - get camera and you ready to go. Then *just* before you take the picture you smile. If you find a tension in your face - distract yourself - puff up your cheeks and blow a raspberry or do something silly - imagine something to make you laugh THEN immediately take the picture. Dont like your teeth? do a more gentle smile where lips part less - aim for beimg amused rather than pissing youself.

Beyond that? Brown paper bag with a smiley face on it.

a quandary, could you change my mind?

I feel I look terrible on my face picture I try to take, its better if its a surprise, but its hard to surprise myself. And I'm still have lockdown locks, so it makes the frame to the face look worse.
