How do you find a tattooist who can do superb tattoo's?

I'd like an Octopus hold onto my thigh.... alas having looked at some local tattoo places I feel I have a big ask

Go to a reputable shop. Ask to see their portfolios which should be available online too.

See what artists style you like. Have a chat to them. Show them what you want. Any decent artist will love doing a custom piece and a decent size too.

My tattoo artist is super excited about finishing off my leg piece. I have 2 appointments with her in the same week to finish off. Think she is looking forward to it more than me!

Instagram is a great tool and how I found my artists! Look at some local shops and they usually tag their artists. Can also look in other local cities as I personally don't mind travelling for the art. Xx

Best thing to do is ask people in your area for recommendations - then look them up on social media for their work, always do more research than you think! Some artists are good at certain things, but not other things so pay attention to the style of their work (realistic, traditional, abstract etc)

Have a good think about the style you want your tattoo as in realism, illustrative, watercolour, traditional etcetc and look for artists that way. Check portfolios on insta and ask for recommendations of that style.

All too often I see posts on local groups when people are asking for recommendations for first tattoos and people just throw out names of who they go to, many of whom are absolute scratchers. Do your homework and get an idea of your style before even asking anyone. Do not go to a jack of all trades type artists and do be prepared to pay around £80 and hour for your work. A good thigh piece is probably gonna be about 4hrs.

Hope this helps!

Be prepared to wait once you find one as well.

Mine has a 6-8 month wait permanently.

On the other hand the poor tattoist around the corner is always empty. Occasionally someone will go there and end up at my tattoist to get it corrected.

One guy had to have his tattoo removed and then covered it was that bad.

Be patient.

Thank you everyone,

I have been 'stalking' a few tattooist on facebook I don't have IG but looks like I will be getting it soon!

Alas the ones I am stalking I am not happy with, also yet to see a decent tattoo of an octopus, loads on Pintrest though!

I did pay £70 for a consultation a few years back now, gosh that was 4 years ago, was 2015/16 time. After an in depth conversation of what I want didn't want etc, I got a 'draft' and it was everything I did not want! So am wary of paying for another consultation.

I am thinking of popping along to a tattoo convention, but that will probably be next yr if covid buggers off!

I have no problems with traveling or paying 'top dollar' after all I have to live with it and if I am not happy with it I will be disappointed etc

You really shouldn't have to pay for a consultation

Word of mouth is normally good.

Look on their sites and at the artists . They normally have plenty of their work on .

Social media is a great help Instagram especially. Go in with images of what you want and where you want it and see what they say many tattooists are more than happy to sit and talk with you about what you want and the good ones will be very appreciative and excited of new work that they may not have done before.

Hey OP,

I tried to message you about a local tattoo place but unfortunately unable to.

Have a look at Old London Road in Kingston. I love my tattoo by them and I know many others that have been there too.

A gentleman never tells

Word of mouth is usually a good place to start then look them up online, do your research especially if there is a specific design/style you are looking for eg: script work, black and grey, portraits etc and for god's sake remember the old saying "good tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good"

Get recommendations from friends or people you know, do lots of research, and make sure that you like the artist's preferred style before anything else. My favourite tattoo artist was a recommendation from a friend's wife and I'd never go to anyone else now.

Ouch.. I've never paid for a consultation.. that seems very pricey regardless just to get a sketch...

I know quite a few good artists down here that I could recommend - but that would depend on how far you are willing to travel

I have an Octopus tattoo which i adore. At the end of the day I think you get what you pay for. It wasn't cheap and took over 6hrs but worth every penny for the detail. Any decent tattooist will have photos of past work etcamd go from their but you should also do a fair amount of research on styles, position of tattoo, pictures you like etc
