What makes you feel nostalgic?

Is it a feeling which reappears in your life frequently or one rather alien? Are you looking forward to the future or are you nostalgic about what been and gone?

Please share.

London

I love it when you listen to music or smell certain scents and they take you straight back to someone or somewhere in your life previously.

Also when you hear a song for the first time and it already has a nostalgic vibe to it, that’s a great feeling.

On the whole nostalgia for me is always a positive, cocooning and nurturing sensation that I experience reasonably frequently like a touchstone to reset me and remind me of all I have to be grateful for.

I don't really get nostalgic. I try to stay grounded in the present rather than thinking about what has been or what is to come.

I think both are important. It's by knowing what I'm nostalgic for that I know what I'm looking for xx

I did wonder if for me nostalgia might be too close to sadness of missing rather than enriching experience of it. Thank you for showing there was another way of looking at it.

That's very pragmatic.

La la land

Going to my friend's parents house who I've known since we were bumps in our mothers bellies. They are like my second family, and their kitchen beings so much warmth and joy I actually well up each time I leave. To them I'll always be the little bossy scrawny kid, and called the pet names I've always had. With them I'm transported to the happy times in my childhood and who can't get nostalgic over that

Totally agree with both the music and different scents invoking feelings of nostalgia.

There and to the left a bit

Many things can send me on a nostalgic journey, a smell, a sound, a particular song, or even just a mention of something that sparks a thought or a memory - today's "You know you're old" thread sparked loads

Ramsey

Lots of dance music takes me back to various times in my late teens. Nights out, first loves, friends that didn't make it to my age, that sort of thing.

Above all wishing I had known myself back then like I do now & how much extra fun I could have had as Gemma. Starting to make up for it a little with a second attempt at getting out there.

But you had all this time to grow into who you are.

"What makes you feel nostalgic?

For me nostalgia is a positive thing, I remember the good things.

Bad things are just memories.

As others have said, a song, a scent work for me too. As do old photographs and talking with my bestie. We've been 'together' since we were 12

Nostalgia to me means looking back and yearning for something. This is something I rarely do.

That is the most nostalgic one of all!

I yearn for simplicity. I guess it's harder to focus on making things happen now and easier to get drawn to memories of the "better past" sometimes.

Worthing

Old school friends posts on social media. I've kept in contact with some since my Infants school.
