So some of us are health and fitness enthusiasts, I personally like running ( no seriously I do, don’t let my pics fool ya) I’m currently in a slump and finding it hard to be motivated, so what motivates you to run, How do you keep focused? And what do you enjoy about it?

I have started running since the gyms have been closed.

I'm really enjoying bettering myself and my times. Whether it's for a 1k, 5k or 10k. If I'm targeting a distance and time, after a while if I'm on target for getting my pb (or close to it) then it usually motivates me to keep pushing!

I love how running hits the reset button for me its difficult and that's what I enjoy even better if the weather is awful to enjoy a real suffer-fest

PBs are a great target and motivation but I think at the moment my slump is due to mental health, I have a target of a marathon next year (having done several half marathons and 10ks over the past few years) but finding it hard to get up and out to do the training.

Behind the bike shed!

I (The Boy) run every day, I have done since the start of the year. I’ve found that that goal has kept me going.

I ran for a few years, Did 10k charity runs and such. Then injuries came along. So I switched to backpacking. Takes longer but achieves similar results.

Racehorse or workhorse?

Find a group to run with if you haven't already. Running alone is hard work and it's hard to get yourself out of a slump.

There is one locally but with social distancing I think people are afraid to go running in groups, unless part of each other’s bubbles.

It's just getting back into the routine. Always an upward slog but there's no magic pill you just have to do it. And keep on doing it.

I'm running about 4 times a week now.

I think after heart surgery I thought it would be more easier to get back to running, I do 5kms every few days when I do get out, and I’ve completed a 5km and 10km run in the past 18 months since surgery, but think I’ve placed too much pressure on myself

I agree. I’ve been running for about 3 years now, but since lockdown it has been really difficult to keep motivated. A friend of mine who is a marathon runner added me to a monthly 50mile challenge via the Nike Run Club app and it has helped a lot! There are 83 of us on the challenge and I always want to be in the top 10.

I agree about the pressure placing it on yourself, i had planned to work my way up from 5k to 10k over the next half of the year then Lockdown cane and had to do lots on my own, became obsessed with how fast i was going and my pace, i didnt run fir almost 2 weeks, had a complete rest, re focused on not putting pressure on, i nanaged 5k Saturday then my first 10k yesterday with no pressure just to get the job done, legs ache a bit but i got there

I’ve never not had the motivation to run, it’s my hobby and I enjoy it. I’m not a member of a running club I always run solo. Maybe it’s not for you if you don’t have the motivation

Don't wear a tracking watch, don't look at your time. Just put some of your favourite music on and enjoy being out in the fresh air.

I couldn't run for 4 months and just being out again felt amazing.

Some alone headspace, knowing I was doing something good for my body, plus listening to my favourite music!

I think listening to a good podcast that interests you and not worrying about the times so much helps, just get out there

Loads of groups out running at the moment, you'll be amazed how may people are looking to run in groups. Perfectly safe, just don't be a dick and respect other peoples space.

I love running & had a target of a half marathon but it cancelled & this took away my motivation to do anything. I need to go start again, my mental health was so much better when I was running.

The Parkrun on a Saturday morning (when it’s back on) should give you motivation. The Parkrun website will tell you your nearest.

I'm not a big runner but cycle a lot, I find that doing something different is good for motivation... although habit removes the need for motivation all together; if you always run every day at the same time, regardless of the weather, you will not need motivation.

Run your own half marathon, you don’t need crowds, medals and t shirts just do it for yourself

Running ia a brilliant exercise i've been running since i was 7 so 52 yrs experience. Just throw your running kit on and get out of the house, street, park, hills. I've had some massive traumas in my life when i do get stressed out a good run does the job i get back feeling positive destressed and life is great.

Totally agree.

I was on the Newport marathon, Roman Run and Snowdon marathon, all have been postponed but I am going to run the course routes anyway because I have trained hard for it and I like setting personal goals.

I will enjoy the crowd buzz next year, thinking of it as a training run.

As someone who's had depression in the past I find it vital, without the gym and a regular source of sexercise to go with, running has literally been my coping mechanism, create a play list, clear your head and just run, completely refreshes your state of mind and helps with any stress or tension. I did 5 miles this morning, I'm a bit stiff but it's so much better than just staying inactive

At the moment I'm just riding my bike...what motivates me is being outside in the fresh air in the countryside....I cross train to help reduce boredom and and tend to monitor myself on feel...I don't even use a stop watch even when I've run marathons. The biggest barrier is the front door...if you open and step outside you're on your way

I usually set myself race date targets, sign up for 4 10k races a year and a half marathon, so I've always got something to aim at.

This year has thrown a ton of speakers in the works, so I've decided to shift things up a bit.

Ditched my old training apps (Adidas Runtastic) and am now using Zombies, Run

They've got the usual training plans and tracking you might find on other apps, but it's wrapped up in a story mode that gets you to run around the countryside, avoid zombies, and collect stuff, whilst investigating the cause of the outbreak.

Well acted, voice overs and high production values keep you going through the stories and plot lines, and you want to complete the runs to move on to the next chapters

Just back from a 5km run, 50 mins for 5.5km, not my fastest but it’s a start, decided to take some advise and put on music and go for a run, no pressure just, do what I do and I broke it down into sections, I live on top of a valley with half my run going downhill and the other half coming uphill so the second half was tougher but I done it

Running has never been for me, my motivation has been charity for one that supports a disease a parent passed away from, and my main motivation for that was the quicker I ran, the quicker I’d see them at the final finish line. Obviously mental health has been a bit of a struggle over the years but running has been my constant through everything. Sorry don’t mean to turn the thread into a “feel sorry for me” thread was just looking to get runners to share experience, tips and maybe start local running groups for like minded individuals like us. Good way to get to know each other, and then maybe carry that to the bedroom or clubs.

I run every other day. Around 5-8k along cliffs and in the woods. The location really helps to motivate me. For a while I wanted to increase my distance but actually, if I get for long 25k hikes in the countryside a couple of times a month.. Its all a nice mix.

I found I was getting little injuries if I tried to run further. I figured maybe I'm not meant for it x

Find your thing.. What feels easy/pleasurable. Pushing sometimes doesn't make for sustainable routines.

X

Started running again, probably about 8 weeks into lockdown. I was eating badly and really tearing the arse out of the beer. I'm running 10k four or five times a week and I'm really starting to enjoy it now I've found my running rhythm.

I have to say weight loss is motivation enough for me, looking lean is great.

I find that if you shout enough abuse at law enforcement they will chase you, they're pretty quick too and don't like to give up so works wonders for your stamina and longevity
