"Been vegan for a few months now. What made you become vegan? I'm interested to know. I'm doing it for the planet. It's a fact that the easiest and most effective thing we can do to reduce climate change is to cut out meat and dairy. So much land is taken up to raise livestock and to feed them, the numbers are staggering. And the alternatives are so good these days. Oat milk is the best. And meat alternatives are mega tasty. " Hi! I turned vegetarian when I was 29. For years I'd thought about it because I knew that we didn't actually need to kill living creatures to sustain ourselves, but needed a push to make the step. Then about 10 years ago I was in a supermarket and noticed how many veggie options there were just in terms of freezer foods, so I decided to try it, and a year later, having found out more about the dairly industry, I went vegan. So, more to do with a general ethical position of 'do least harm' and animal welfare than for the environment initially, but that is certainly a welcome bonus

"Yeah for sure the animal welfare is also priority, with our standards being so bad in the UK. " And about to lower our standards further so that we can do a trade deal with America whose standards are so low they don't meet ours at the moment.

"Yup. It's a disgrace. It seems the UK is going backwards, rapidly. " Yep, and it's not only vegans concerned. I've talked about this with meat-eating friends and they're really against the lowering of food standards for animal cruelty reasons.

"We’ve been vegan since taking part in veganuary 2018. It hasn’t been easy but we wouldn’t go back. Now we’re starting a vegan ski holiday business and doing what we can to encourage and promote plant based food. We’d love to get to know some Fab Vegans too x" I've not been on the forums for ages so only just seen this but that is *fantastic*! What a cool thing to do. How's it going?

"Hello. I'm a non eater of animal products. Not the same as Vegan........ i'm heading toward vegan and NO im not a vegetarian. Does this group exclude meat eaters ?" It's a group for vegans primarily, but if non-vegans want to join in and do so respectfully, that's fine by me. But it's a bit like asking if a thread called 'Sci-fi fans' excludes people who don't like sci-fi - why would you want to post in it if you're not?

"Are vegetarians welcome? No This is a thread for Fab's vegans to meet and chat, and for anyone who is genuinely interested to get further info." I’m very much a meat eater, but I refuse to drive through towns or cities with ‘ham’ in the name and have zero interest in getting further info, but I, like many others value the chance to talk on a public forum about any topic if we wish to do so.

"Are vegetarians welcome? No This is a thread for Fab's vegans to meet and chat, and for anyone who is genuinely interested to get further info. Im not sure you can dictate who posts tbh" Is this comment aimed at me or the person who said 'No'? I'm not sure how much more open 'for anyone who is genuinely interested' can be. That was the aim of setting up this thread. If I'd said 'This is a thread for people who love sci-fi to discuss their favourite books and films' I don't think I'd be being criticised for 'dictating' anything so I'm not sure why I am here.

" Discussion threads have a purpose - to discuss a particular topic, or play a game, for example. The first post usually explains what that purpose is. If I started a thread about everyone's favourite bands would you have posted 'But I want to talk about my favourite cars and don't like being told I can only talk about music in this thread'?

"This is a thread for Fab's vegans to meet and chat, and for anyone who is genuinely interested to get further info. Come say hi! " Thank you. We have been in the past but have “backslided” in the last year or so. The ethical, health and environmental arguments for veganism are unbeatable, yet it is still difficult for us. We have discussed redoubling our efforts again this month! We still drink soya milk (which has its own production concerns) or oat milk and eat lots of fruits and salads and rarely touch diary or cheese so it isn’t all negative!

"I think supplements is a very personal thing. It’s not just your diet but how your body works too I have flax and chia everyday on my breakfast, but my husband feels the need to take an omega complex. I take calcium supplements even though I eat a lot of tofu, leafy veg, beans etc, I’m just a woman of a certain age. But, if your vitamin D is low your body won’t process calcium properly and so maybe for some people that’s what they need to look at. My husband and I both take B12 even though I use fortified foods and sprinkle nooch everywhere. Yet my son manages to get enough through his vegan diet, and yes it’s been checked by the doctor.supplements are a complex thing and so many meat eaters aren’t getting enough of everything they need either. It’s very personal. Lex" I just take a generic multivitamin as well as omega 3 . My blood tests were fine before the multivitamins but I feel the benefit.

"As vegans do you live completely without animal products or is it just in your food that you stay away from them. Also what's your stance on honey?" As far as possible, yes... Obviously I have leather items, but these were purchased before going vegan. As and when they are replaced, it will be with vegan appropriate products. This seasons flu vaccine wasn't vegan, (they are grown in eggs) but I'm assured next years one will be. There are also pharma products that are unavoidable. Other things can cause issues. Photography for example. I'm a photographer, and going vegan put an end to any desire or interest in returning to film seriously with large formats. Gelatine is used in bonding the emulsion to the celluloid. As I have a digital alternative, it's a no from me. Honey? Simple, it's made by animals for their use, so it's any from me, and the official vegan line would be no. I'd love to see a vegan planet, but I don't have a crusade to stop people making their own choices. If someone is vegan one day a week, that's a win. People can slowly move to veganism. Every little helps.

"I know I’ll never eat flesh again, though. After 25 years meat-free, just the thought of eating flesh feels so incredibly wrong now. I can’t even walk past the butcher’s counter in the supermarket without wanting to barf - the metallic smell of blood knocks me sick." That's it though, isn't it? It's flesh. It's dead animals. I walk down the meat isle in the supermarket and just see death. Slaughter. Bloodshead. The dead zoo. Once you're in that mindset, no meat is no hassle.

"Great thread! It’s just cheese, for me, now. Ugh... it’s my arch nemesis." I'm ok with cheese. Miss the stilton etc but Violife extra mature is ok and I'm loving the applewood vegan cheese. Melts wonderfully on toast.

I’m a cheese junkie and I’m sorry!!! Lol. I don’t even buy nice cheese, either. I get the cheapest, mildest supermarket cheddar and have it on crackers... so maybe I am still vegan based on the fact that it has more plastic in it than cheese

Can I object to shit spelling or are you trying to be funny? (It’s not working) I see nothing normal with eating flesh.

"Hello. I'm a non eater of animal products. Not the same as Vegan........ i'm heading toward vegan and NO im not a vegetarian. Does this group exclude meat eaters ? It's a group for vegans primarily, but if non-vegans want to join in and do so respectfully, that's fine by me. But it's a bit like asking if a thread called 'Sci-fi fans' excludes people who don't like sci-fi - why would you want to post in it if you're not? Because I might want to join a discussion and learn about Sci-Fi. In that response I said; 'but if non-vegans want to join in and do so respectfully, that's fine by me'. I'm not sure what you're arguing against. Im not arguing. I asked a question. I won't come back in take care. You asked a question, but when I answered that you were welcome you continued to talk as though I had said that you were not - asking what the point of a 'closed church' was even when I'd said that the doors were open. That's what I meant by not understanding where you were coming from. If people want to talk about veganism in a respectful way, that's the main thing. Sooooo Who takes supplements? Tell me about your supplement taking please Cos Ive done alot of research on nutrition, but Im still not really sure Im taking the right stuff At the moment a multivitamin. A nutritionist could probably do you an online consult if you want to tailor your supplementation more?" My daughter is veggie/vegan since she was 12 and I bought her some B12 vitamins as I read that is important to take as difficult to get enough.

" My daughter is veggie/vegan since she was 12 and I bought her some B12 vitamins as I read that is important to take as difficult to get enough." You don’t necessarily need to take a B12 supplement if you are vegan. There is B12 in fortified breakfast cereal and fortified dairy free mills, such as oat milk and soya milk. B12 is also in nutritional yeast, and I think it might be in Marmite, too. Anyways, B12 doesn’t need to be supplemented if you watch what you eat. The only supplementation one might need is Vitamin D. We live in the UK, so we’re all Vit-D deficient. Meat eaters or non meat eaters. Everything else can be obtained from a healthy and balanced diet.

It depends but mostly faux leather (polyester, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or polyurethane) also cotton and recycled or virgin rubbers can be purchased. Recently I’ve seen recycled corks as well.

"Definitely fully vegetarian and nearly fully vegan (having difficulty eliminating cheese). Seeking other playful spirits on a similar journey ... " I'm vegetarian, almost vegan. I eat eggs sometimes. My friend has pet chickens, and too many eggs going to waste. I figured that was ok. Cheese is addictive. I struggled to give up cheese too. I used to love the stuff. It takes about 3/4 weeks and your cheese craving will be gone. Now I never think about it. At all. I eat vegan cheese. But hardly any. Just as a topping really for pizza, macaroni cheese and stuff. My other weakness. Cream cakes!. But found Elmlea do a plant cream. That whips!!!. So problem solved.

"I've been wanting to add more vegan options to my diet as I don't believe the current rate of meat consumption is sustainable. However, it's been pretty tough to do while also trying to maintain my bulking goals at the gym. Does anyone have any tips for how I could do this? " I use vegan protein powder. But I know there's lots of vegan bodybuilders, so maybe check them out.
