My favourite lyricist now that Morrissey has gone all hateful is Nick Cave. This is from one of his more romantic songs, Into My Arms:

I don't believe in an interventionist God but I know darling, that you do/ But if I did I would kneel down and ask him not to intervene when it came to you

Does that make his lyrics any worse though? Separating the man from the music is quite difficult for some I agree.

For what it's worth, I've always thought Morrissey was a tosser but love The Smiths. I'd still happily listen to them all day and appreciate Morrissey's gift as a lyricist.

To seek the sacred river Alph

To walk the caves of ice

To break my fast on honey dew

And drink the milk of paradise

I had heard the whispered tales

Of immortality

The deepest mystery

From an ancient book, I took a clue

I scaled the frozen mountain tops

Of eastern lands unknown

Time and man alone

Searching for the lost, Xanadu

To stand within the pleasure dome

Decreed by Kubla Khan

To taste anew the fruits of life

The last immortal man

To find the sacred river Alph

To walk the caves of ice

Oh, I will dine on honey dew

And drink the milk of paradise, oh, paradise

A thousand years have come and gone

But time has passed me by

Stars stopped in the sky

Frozen in an everlasting view

Waiting for the world to end

Weary of the night

Praying for the light

Prison of the lost, Xanadu

Held within the pleasure dome

Decreed by Kubla Khan

To taste my bitter triumph

As a man, immortal man

Never more shall I return

Escape these caves of ice

For I have dined on honey dew

And d*unk the milk of paradise.

Songwriters: Geddy Lee / Alex Lifeson / Neil Peart - Rush

It's a good point and like you I love The Smith's, they meant a lot to me in the 80s but I find it hard to differentiate the art from the artist. Similar to Polanski, great film maker but awful man, that taints my view of films I loved before I knew about his tastes.

Was in a damaging controlling relationship, to hide yourself is your protection sometimes

These lyrics mean a lot to me;

Forgetting all the hurt inside

You've learned to hide so well

Pretending someone else

Can come and save me from myself

I can't be who you are

See something just ain't right

See your government kill others

For a wage that's how we waste life

I bleed, you bleed, we bleed together

Getting lost up in the system

That teaches us to be separate

Easier to deal wi' us when we are split up in sections

As one, we're strong, hold on

Never let up, I'm fed up

Living in this world where they tell us

We're nothing without money to show

And to represent us, but

Fuck a skin color

Cause we're still brothers and sisters

Don't let them tell you any different

Was, so happy in this fiction

But the reality is cold, now

We saw how to leave it, but

This prison is killing

Everything we've been

Tin town

So many wonderful lyrics that mean so much... But father to son by cat Stevens.. Reasons I won't go into and just one verse...

I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy

To be calm when you've found something going on

But take your time, think a lot

Why, think of everything you've got

For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not

I like songwriters who can tell a story in a song so songs by Squeeze, the Beautiful South and evening Rod Stewart spring to mind.

So, Carry On Regardless by the Beautiful South; Up The Junction by Squeeze and You’re In My Heart by Rod Stewart are my favourites.

L’boro/Ashby & Cheltenham

1. Did I make money? Was I proud?

Did I play my songs too loud?

Did I leave my life to chance

Or did I make you fucking dance?

2. Things change just wait for the good things to come

At the end of the darkest night comes the light of the sun

Say - hold on to the best things you got now

And grow something new with the rain in your soul

3. I could go home to my love

And live the life I've always wanted

Or I could go on running off

Into the night, lonely and haunted

And the strange thing is

I don't know which I prefer

As I sit here and watch the sun set on Sacre Coeur

4. Beloved child

You are the light of the world

Beloved child...

Go out, spread light to the world

Be strong, be kind, be brave

Know your mind

Know that you're are divine

Know that it's alright to be afraid

Some of my favourite lyrics

Blur - I'm a professional cynic but my heart's not in it. I'm paying the price of living life at the limit

Oasis - all your dreams are made of strawberry lemonade (hence the name!)

Courteeners - I never wanted this to happen this way. When do we ever, a little time called never. Retrospect is such a cruel invention, no cruel intentions, not a single bad one

Gerry Cinnamon - Well I’m a renegade of sorts, I roam the concrete jungle hunting idiots for sport

Son, I'm 30

And I don't have a decent bone in me

What you get is just what you see yeah

I see it so I take it freely

I never help or give to the needy

Come on and see me
