"Currently reading Stephen king - the outsiders Reading has always been apart of my daily life lockdown has given me a reason to try and get through my to read pile.. but also buying new books ![]() I watched 'The Outsider' on NowTV - pretty good adaptation (haven't read the book though). I've managed to get through quite a few of my reading pile due to lockdown. I am rediscovering my love of reading - although nowadays I mostly read non-fiction.

"Erm. Lots! I have a Kindle (literally waiting for Amazon to drop off my replacement) and since I've used one I can get through a novel in a few hours. I think my next one will be Skagboys by Irvine Welsh or The Outsider by Stephen King." Just finished the outsider ![]()

I have to kero a dictionary and pencil by me as it is ![]() I remember studying the Canterbury Tales at school and, even though English was my favourite subject, I hated it - always thought it should be studied as a foreign language book.

I have to kero a dictionary and pencil by me as it is ![]() I recently heard a short extract read by a famous person (can't remember who and can't find where I heard it), it sounded so beautiful that I got my old copy out to read again. I think it might be a book that's best read to you if, like me, you're not an English scholar.

"Currently reading “The Name of the Wind” by Patrick Rothfuss, his first novel and it’s fantastic x Viv x Love love this book " It’s wonderful!! Impatient to finish it so can start the next one, but lockdown reading hampered by the girls being home so wanting constant attention. Books offer escapism, and at times that’s much needed xx

"I'm reading a few Max Hastings books at the moment. I finished his history of the Vietnam war; Is the Vietnam war book of his worth reading? I've been looking for a decent book about the war." I think it's very good and WH Smith's was selling the hardback for £7 before lockdown. He goes into the big picture well, but rather than focusing on the details of every battle (like Hamburger Hill which only gets passing references), he described some key big ones ones and reserves a lot of space for telling how it affected individuals. Whilst Hollywood portrays it as an American disaster, he makes a good case that the people who really had it worst were the Vietnamese themselves.

"I think it might be a book that's best read to you if, like me, you're not an English scholar. " Much like poetry. I always think it's better read to you. Literature like the Canterbury Tales and the Greeks are better listened to than read as that is how they would, probably, have been originally presented. Unless you're studying them of course.

That's very true. I hadn't thought of it that way.

"Whilst Hollywood portrays it as an American disaster, he makes a good case that the people who really had it worst were the Vietnamese themselves. " I'll add it to my reading wish list. Thanks. I don't really see the Vietnam War as an American disaster - they were there to prevent the North taking the South (which they did) and it was only after Paris Peace Accords had been signed that the Americans left. Then, breaking the Peace Accords, the North launched another attack on the South and won (roughly).
