Seeing as lockdown probably freed up more time for reading what are you reading or have just finished/started reading?

I've just finished 'H is for Hawk' by Helen McDonald ( recommended) and started to read 'London Overground' by Iain Sinclair

Erm. Lots!

I have a Kindle (literally waiting for Amazon to drop off my replacement) and since I've used one I can get through a novel in a few hours. I think my next one will be Skagboys by Irvine Welsh or The Outsider by Stephen King.

I'm reading a few Max Hastings books at the moment. I finished his history of the Vietnam war; I'm coming to the end of his First World War history; then I'll be on his Second World War history. I also have a history of MI5 I'm interspersing with those books. Luke

I watched 'The Outsider' on NowTV - pretty good adaptation (haven't read the book though).

I've managed to get through quite a few of my reading pile due to lockdown.

I am rediscovering my love of reading - although nowadays I mostly read non-fiction.

Is the Vietnam war book of his worth reading? I've been looking for a decent book about the war.

Strangely I haven't been able to concentrate on reading properly during lockdown. I started rereading Canterbury Tales but it's taking me ages. I did read The Daughters of The House by Michele Roberts, it's fairly short but I struggled to get through that.

I remember studying the Canterbury Tales at school and, even though English was my favourite subject, I hated it - always thought it should be studied as a foreign language book.

I recently heard a short extract read by a famous person (can't remember who and can't find where I heard it), it sounded so beautiful that I got my old copy out to read again. I think it might be a book that's best read to you if, like me, you're not an English scholar.

I think it's very good and WH Smith's was selling the hardback for £7 before lockdown.

He goes into the big picture well, but rather than focusing on the details of every battle (like Hamburger Hill which only gets passing references), he described some key big ones ones and reserves a lot of space for telling how it affected individuals.

Whilst Hollywood portrays it as an American disaster, he makes a good case that the people who really had it worst were the Vietnamese themselves.

Much like poetry. I always think it's better read to you. Literature like the Canterbury Tales and the Greeks are better listened to than read as that is how they would, probably, have been originally presented. Unless you're studying them of course.

I'll add it to my reading wish list. Thanks. I don't really see the Vietnam War as an American disaster - they were there to prevent the North taking the South (which they did) and it was only after Paris Peace Accords had been signed that the Americans left. Then, breaking the Peace Accords, the North launched another attack on the South and won (roughly).

I'm just about to start The Fall of the King by Johannes V Jensen, which has come highly recommended, a classic of Danish literature. After that it's back to the SF/fantasy that I love. Some of the more recent on my the list are:

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Declaration of the Rights of Magicians by HG Parry

Lion Heart by Ben Kane

Upon reflection, the fact that everyone is talking about The Outsider means that I'm taking it as a sign that I need to read it too.

I do actually need to read the last one and a half Harry Potters first though. I was determined to read the series during lockdown but I drifted off after the fifth book.

13th Valley by John M Del Vecchio is still my favourite account of conflict on the ground from a grunt perspective.

William Beckford - The History of the Caliph Vathek 1786.

Image a Gothic romance set in a royal court in ancient Arabia, not an easy read but the beauty and playfulness of the language is a exquisite and a pleasure, recommended.

My friend bought me it for Christmas knowing that I would love the books, he then told don't devour them because he has been waiting something like 8 years. Whilst I have been waiting 3 years.

I haven't read anything by Peter v Brett off to Google for me.

I read so many books. This week I read a Karen Rose romantic suspense (ok, bit formulaic but entertaining enough), a Roman whodunnit by Lindsey Davis (highly recommend, it was smashing) and I'm on my second Georgette Heyer tonight (rereading a lot of my teen favourites and these are an absolute joy).

On my to read pile is Tristram Shandy, a Marian Keyes (can't remember which one) and the first Game of Thrones novel.
