Can you do it?

I can't

I'm looking at cycle routes - and I just can't make any sense of it.

I'm going to get so lost

But you can ask for the way, I love asking for help actually because it turns into these most random and interesting conversations often

Enjoy your bike ride!

My nan’s spare room.

I adore maps, I can look at them for ages like a work of art.

You could say I can get myself lost in a land ranger map.

Although to answer the question I’m quite proficient with a map and compass.

I think its a man thing - the map skills.

Years ago before tech I used to get lost in the car as well

My partner was not impressed with my A-Z reading skills

Of course you can’t read a map, you are female.

I have a love and an appreciation of paper maps and have quite a collection of the UK and France. First thing I do on holiday to a new area is get a map.

Google maps on your phone - the cycle function is quite good but of course you can’t see the bigger picture that a map provides. Having said that, I used google maps for a ride from Cambridge to Scarborough the other year and it worked great.

Good luck but it sounds like you really need a man to help. You see, we do still have our uses!

Hull

My first chosen career was to become a Cartographer, ie, map maker.

Even though I attended an Open Day at Bartholomew's Maps in Edinburgh in 1973 and passed all the tests with the highest pass marks in years, it was my Optician who dashed my hopes, due to the potential eye strain I would place on my existing poor eyesight.

Even now, I read maps like others read a book or a newspaper. Map contents are a language all of its own.

A rather sexist view on map reading! I’m a female and I can read a map.

Same here, I sort of miss them using my satnav all the time. The interesting detail is not there.

I used to Orienteer, so not too bad with a compass and map.

I used to be pretty good at reading os maps, teaching how to read them also. But as they say if you don't use it you lose it so I'm prolly not very good now with the harder stuff.

Chester

There have been studies done about women and map reading. It's a very common problem. According to an article I was reading; women's map reading abilities are increased when oestrogen levels are at their lowest in their monthly cycle. At this time, its said that testosterone levels are at their highest.

Therefore it implies that map reading ability is linked with testosterone levels. Very odd.

I love analysing things. I've analysed how I read maps.

As a man, what I actually do is look at the shape which the roads make. So if I'm on a road which bends to the right, I actually envision an "r" shape and disregard the rest. I remember where I am in that "r". At the end of the "r", I look for the next shape... "Ok, now there's a crossroad".. like and "x" and I need to take the right there. Weird eh?

However! I believe women are capable. They just need to give it more thought.

A question to the current map readers.

I do remember "grid to mag add, mag to grid get rid". But obviously magnetic North has been moving a lot since I last did this.

Has it flipped over yet?

Not yet. But some countries you have to do it the other way. Norways maps require mag to grid add.

Although you are only adding about 50 mils so it's kind of irrelevant as you will have a greater error in your compass anyway.

Has it flipped over yet?"

Can easily find my way by maps, usually more reliable than twat nav, but they do get a bit soggy in the rain.

Love old maps and was in heaven when I found a website which overlays centuries old maps over the modern..... sad fucker I know

I don't think you need to use your man tool to trace the route
