Its an age thing. . . .'every generation throws a hero up the pop charts'

How could you ever say who was 'the best' guitarist, what style, what age, from what era?

Couple of nominations are Paul Kossoff, Richard Thompson and Paul Gilbert, all for very different reasons!

lol...."mamas in the kitchen baking apple pie ,daddies in the backyard....get a job son you know you oughta try....."

i liked rory seen him in a few times and going to my home town was a fave ..

i thought Robin trower was nifty too

but for me it has to be Hendrix for rock cliched i know and it is all down to personal taste of course , but i just thought he pushed the envelope that tiny bit further for a while than the rest.

classical = segovia

contempory jazz = django rheinhardt a genious with only 2 fingers on his left hand.

all time fav is jimmy page. From the 90's john squire, tom morello and steve craddock. Funny how all best guitarists lists seem to have to come from the 60's & 70s, plenty of good players around who are current too.

My favourite is John Squire of The Stone Roses/Seahorses, just so damn tuneful, amazing player!

It's a toss-up for greatest though between - (cant believe no-one has mentioned yet) Jimmy Page of Led Zep and Jimi Hendrix......i'd give it to Page simply as his tunes and riffs are immense, Hendrix undoubtedly was one of the most technical players to live.

Lot of lesser known players dont get the credit they deserve, good to see Ry Cooder mentioned already, and possibly the guitarists guitarist Bert Jansch.

Some great guitarist's been mentioned so far, but i've got to agree with the Hendrix fans.

In terms of style and pure genius nobody can touch him. He pushed the musical boundaries and developed a unique sound. Look at the legacy he has left behind, even more unbelievable considering he only started recording in 1967 before his early death in 1970!!

yeah i agree ,have you heard the Electric ladyland remixes from the beautiful people "if 60's were 90s" the stuff he wrote and played slotted straight in to the modern contempory sound 25 years plus after he went

Not really my cup of tea but Devin Townsend is an amazing guitarist.

David Gilmour is a very versatile and tactful player too.

Jose feliciano is the Stevie Wonder of the guitar world as they both blind.

More contepory ones would include,

Billy Corgan, Jim Martin, Adam Jones, dimebag Darrel, John Fruicante.

Even more subjective than drummers ...

Hendrix would have to be there simply because he played chords no one else could because of how he strung the guitar.

Brian May will always be there.

Classical John Williams ?

But for me it has to be Gary Moore. The man was a total genius as a blues and rock player. Rest In Peace and rock the angels Gary!

"just watched a programme about the legendary les paul he was still performing in his 90s, superb, and i bet all of the above nominees had one of his guitars"

Glad I read back a bit before posting! Was just about to say I watched that Les Paul docu, absolutely brilliant, and sooooo many good/great guitarists on it! Can't decide, but more than happy to sit and listen to all the nominee's so far. Personally I like Mark Knopfeller from Dire Straits, but only because have been listening to their music at epic/personal times in our lives ( I want to be buried to the tune "Going Home" aka Theme from Local Hero btw!) . There are many many other contenders and so hard to pick. x

Very tough question but gotta say Hendrix no contest he played left handed with it stringed upside-down n revolutionized the guitar sound plus he n Janis started the 27 club!! , bet if you asked Slash the question he'd say hendrix, also Prince is underated , go on YouTube n check his solo on 'while my guitar gently weeps'

Totally agree, Prince is very underated and often totally forgotten. Probably the best guitarist i've seen live!

Downey was the drummer - do you mean Brian Robertson?

"Not his later stuff but when he was in Love Sculpture, Dave Edmunds did some incredible stuff. Try looking up his versions of Farandole and Sabre Dance on Youtube."
Edmunds is up there as possibly the best RnR guitar player of all time - his rhythm playing is exceptional - up there with Keith Richards as the heirs to Chuck Berry.....

He's also a demon slide player, and a great producer...

"My favourite is John Squire of The Stone Roses/Seahorses, just so damn tuneful, amazing player!

"

Bert Jansch, Martin Carty, Davey Graham, John Martyn - what a quartet of wonderful acoustic players came out of the sixties...

So many brilliant guitarists listed.

What about Gary Rossington in Lynyrd Skynyrd; Robin Trower, Leslie West, Peter Frampton.

Daniel Auerbach of the Black Keys is emerging as one of the best to listen to and none of their tracks are very long but he packs a lot in.

For fun Seasick Steve is the best at making guitars from junk and making some of the best foot tapping songs.

I am off to watch all of the guitarists in this thread as it has brought back a lot of great memories, thanks to the OP.
