When it comes to doing jobs in and around the house do you get a tradesman in or do you have a go yourself?

I've been decorating for a week and it doesn't look like I've done anything it's the painting around fiddly things like the radiators and pipes which is taking the time and doing my head in now

couple, us we him her.

I'm a carpenter and do just about everything has and electrical work the exception.

Saved thousands over the years, and literally done load's to our house.

Unfortunately I never seem to get any time off unless we go away.

You call it DIY I just call it work.

In fact even when I go to visit my mum she asks me to bring my tools.

Only for gas issues, everything else I will do myself, although I would hire plasterers for big work as I don’t enjoy doing it

Depends on what it is. I'm ok with plumbing, laying floors down, plastering, painting, tiling, putting the wall panels up like you see in hotel bathrooms. Anything else I'll call someone in.

Renovated my entire house in around 6 weeks (minus carpet fitting) last year. Cost me around £3000 all in.

Then done the back garden myself whilst on furlough, dug loads out, all covered with prevention and 2.5 tonne of plum slate put down and some flagging done cost around £500 all in.

Don’t think I’d of got much change from £10,000 if I had someone do it for me.

I’ve also started to restore and make my own tools rather than buying them.

Been forging nails the traditional way, restored quite a few hammers and replaced the shafts.

Also started forging out some chisels to the exact shape and size I was.

Plus the stuff I can forge is probably better than most of the shit on the shelves. Especially axes or hammers

I do as much as I can myself.

I cut and laid all my flooring, I also filed my utility room floor and the walls in my kitchen and utility room.

Ah, I had a plumber out last week and it's still leaking after he did the job. I called him back but I haven't heard from him since.

It's hard to find a good reliable tradesman.

We do what we can between us.

But there’s jobs we need trade for. However you try getting a quote off anyone at the moment, it’s a nightmare.

It seems they want to work happy to come round and take details for quotes and that’s the last we hear from them. They don’t seem to want the work. We’ve been waiting for weeks for quotes, joiner was meant to call in today, as yet they’ve not turned up.....

Yea I'll be fitting it all too.

Theres some plastering I need to do, a few sockets to put in and plumbing to do too.

Should have all that done by the time the kitchen arrives.

I'll rewire your house, decorate it, fix your washing machine or hifi, but I f****** hate plumbing. It isn't an exact science and it's awkward af.

Rather get someone in for that.

I wish I was good at DIY!

I moved house in December and have spent a small fortune paying other people to do stuff.

Painting, carpet laying, plumbing, electrics etc ..

I was going to try and put up shelves and pictures etc .. myself.

I'm scared of making holes all over my walls or drilling into a wire or something

I'm rubbish.

We base it on time. It may seem silly to some but our time together or enjoying other things is a factor for us. If it’s going to take a week to do we would rather get someone in and enjoy our time doing something else more enjoyable. You only live once so we want to spend it doing things we enjoy
