Lenny Henry..

Needs to go and buy himself a Rolf Harris DvD and learn how to gel with an audience and not stand like a rabbit in the headlights when he dont know what to do or say next next..or when he is waiting for the audience to laugh at one of his 'witty' comments...

I cant say he let me down last night, I wasnt expecting anything funny from him anyway, he has only got one act...he should stick to doing adverts.

And who's idea was it to use Rob Brydon???, yes he just edged Henry in the 'humour' stakes (although he didnt exactly have anything to beat did he)

Im surprised the old pals act didnt dig up fry and Laurie to do one of their 'hilarious skits'...my spleen is still aching from their last 'comic' performance at live aid.

I never did think much of Lennie Henry. I don't find hum funny in the least, I actually think he is quite silly.

There's a massive difference between being funny and being silly.

Charlie Chaplain was silly but I didn't find him at all funny ...

hate the guy especially wen he does the same cringy west indian voice he did twenty years ago and it wasnt slightly funny then, at least on the premier inn ad they wrote his script which is the first new material hes used in over a decade

I'm soooo glad to see this thread, I've never understood what people 'loved' about this guy

I don't like his humour at all and I've always gotten a real vibe of insincerity from him.

Remember a few years ago he was as usual involved in the 'Comic Relief' thing, he was giving his 'heartfelt' talk to the camera and when he was done some young soldier tried to speak to him.... he was so dismissive of him! it was like as soon as he thought the camera had gone off, so did he. It just cemented all the reservations I'd felt for years about him.

Can't stand to watch him

I'm so glad someone has started this thread.

I mentioned on the jubilee concert thread, as everyone was chatting as the concert happened, that lenny Henry was crap, and still patronizing every with his 'black' jokes. When he asked how many black people were in the crowd followed by chants to start fighting. Well done son.

Suppose it made some of the organisers balance the colour ratio and please some PC Brigaders

I think it's extremely difficult for a comedian to gel with an audience of that size and in the open air where sound doesn't carry as well as in a closed auditorium. Having said that, I've never found Lenny Henry funny in the slightest and he always reverts back to the 'I say Wahhh!" when he's stuck. Brydon is a funny guy, we have his DVD here and it's hilarious, but again, his jokes didn't carry to the live audience and that infiltrated through to the TV audience who expect the audience to laugh and when they don't, they don't laugh either. Humour is infectious you know.

Blackpool

he did struggle last night, and he had to call on rolf to help him out when there was a delay...

and I only find odd comments he makes faintly funny...

rob brydon was the same...they both seemed bolloxed without a script...

thought rolf did alright...

enjoyed the concert though

same with a lot of black comics.

all based on racial humour.

maybe a block dominated audience would get his intended point, but its the same diatribe he has been wheeling out for 20odd years, and being done by others now (gina yashare(sp) being another exponant of it)

I know what you mean. John Bishop would never play on the fact he's from Liverpool, or Frank Carson on being Irish.

These black folk hey!

Yep...4 times he came on and four times he mentioned 'blacks' whats that all about?? some sort of inverted 'racism'?..same ol same ol..he does have the right sort of personality to be a comedian but seriously needs to knock the chip off his shoulder and get a new script writer..Rolf Harris (who Henry constantly interrupted in what looked like a feeble attempt to upstage him) made him look like a rank amateur.

People scoff at the Bruce Forsyths and Jimmy Tarbucks of the entertainment world..but at least they are true pro's who know how to hold an audience.

I understand your point there and its a fair one..but Lenny Henry seems to have an agenda..Look at the difference between him and the Goodness Gracious Me team..they openly and humorously took the mick out of themselves and their culture in a way that everyone could laugh at..very funny people.

so, why not take the piss out himself for being a yam yam?

nope, generally overlooks that in favour of dated racial stereotypes.

sorry, but thats how i see it.

I dont think he is funny.... but if there any unfunny ageing comedians out there, go find out who his Henry's agent is and ask them to represent you, because he has played a blinder getting him a gig like that!.

I agree...don't think he's funny, I've never found him funny. Just don't see the need to mention his race. But the usual suspects never disappoint...will leave them to it.

Actually I think they were parodying people's prejudices rather than taking the mick out of themslves and their own culture. Certainly their most famous sketch "going for an English" doesn't seem to be self depracating.

In the same way he doesnt have to mention it every time he appears on T.V?..he has being going over the same ol thing for years now..and this is nothing to do with the prickly toe curling subject of racism either..I dont find him funny anyway.
