I'd argue he's a good case. The landscape has changed for stand ups much like the music scene. The UK used to push the boundaries but it now seems comics are rather generic and play it safe. They are more interested in developing a TV career, appearing on mediocre panel shows on Dave or entering the mainstream as presenters. Referring back to comparison with the modern music scene, everyone is more beige with less of a message to convey. The creative industry is the domain of the privileged, affluent class these days. In the past, artists of all types strived to assert their message and commentary on society. The benefits system in place allowed individuals to hone their craft, relating their struggles or providing them with an avenue to establish their alter egos. We are now living in a cultural vacuum. Chapelle still dares to take his material to darker places... But is also relevant. And funny.

110%...... i think the thing he can do is take things to such a dark place, or take something really relevant and and make people think whilst being funny....

8:46 was gripping... i didn't realise 27 minutes flew by so quickly....

I totally agree we desperately need a comic in the uk like Dave Chappelle rather than someone playing it safe but I just don’t see it happening

I'm afraid I don't think there is such a thing as the best comedian in the world. Different people laugh at different things. I found 8:46 moving with some humour but it wasn't really supposed to be a laugh a minute. I saw Tambourine and I wasn't that impressed. Dave Chapelle hasn't made me laugh as much as, for example, Rich Hall (who made me laugh so hard I could hardly breathe) but I doubt most people would say he is the best in the world.

You can talk about you favourite and the most popular, but asking who the best is strikes me as a completely unanswerable question.

I think there are comedians who are mass appealing, able to fulfil stadium tours if they were inclined and comedians who are highly regarded by their peers. I'd say Chapelle fits into both categories quite comfortably. In my opinion of course.

Jimmy Carr was good. My brother saw that gig and took his wife to the follow up show a few months later (she could not make the first). He said it was totally new material and just as funny.

Agreed, he's been around a while but he's right on my humour level. I saw him live in manchester two or three years ago and he was class. His rants about fat people (because he was once obese himself) or thinning out the population by sinking cruise ships are hilarious

Yes, Stanhope doesn't care who he upsets. It's refreshing

I also like Simon Evans, because of his cynicism

One of the best I saw (and he never did TV, so you'd have had to have seen him live) was Ian Cognito. He literally died on stage - after joking about it literally 5 minutes earlier - about 18 months ago
