Hi guys

I'm trying to find a forum post.

It was made in a recent thread a week or so back discussing the BLM protests / racism issues currently faced.

It basically gave a number of examples through history of how beliefs were linked to the history, attitudes and opinions of the times.

It was quite long, split in paragraphs with each paragraph ending the same with something like as these were they accept attitudes of that time or similar.

One of the paragraphs talked about how in the UK until 1967 homosexuality was banned (and was rightly over turned) and this fed into the attitudes of the time.

It was a well written post and received a lot of thumbs up from other forumites.

Just wondering if anyone can remember the post and specifically the thread.

Thanks in advance.

2000 years ago, the Romans would enslave captured foes and would feed live Jewish people to the lions. Why? Because it was normal and acceptable at the time. They saw the error of their ways and stopped it.

In the Middle Ages, we burnt people at the stake for speaking out against the church. Why? Because it was normal and acceptable at the time, we’ve since seen the error of our ways and stopped it.

A few hundred years ago, we forcibly exported captured people from Africa to the Caribbean and Americas to work on plantations. Why? Because it was normal and acceptable at the time. We then realised this was wrong and the UK was instrumental in the collapse of the slave trade.

A hundred years ago, we executed by firing squad conscripted soldiers who were suffering shell shock. Why, you guessed it, because it was normal and acceptable at the time. We’ve since stopped this practice too because we realised it was wrong.

More recently and within working memory, we criminally convicted people for being homosexual and in many cases chemically castrated them. Why? Because up until 1967 it was against the law to be homosexual, a law which was normal and acceptable at the time. The law has now changed to accept people for who they are, quite rightly so.

Attempting to remove the past or bring down memorials because it doesn’t fit the current narrative is a dangerous step towards forgetting who we are and how far we’ve actually come.

Those protesting and causing graffiti to war memorials etc need to accept that cultural norms are not fixed, they change with the passage of time.

No one alive today owned or was a slave. No one alive today’s parents, or grandparents owned or was a slave*.

I for one am proud of what our country has stood for over the years, freedom of movement, freedom of speech, the rights of a person to choose their own destiny and we as a country have paid a high price for those freedoms.

It’s time the powers that be realised that history should be celebrated and in no way should we apologise for the behaviours of our ancestors, who were only doing what was normal and acceptable at the time.

That one?
