Illness and being fed up

I'm looking less for sympathy and more for strategies to deal with things.

I'm flat on my arse with post viral fatigue. (Yes, that virus) I'm six weeks in, about a month past the risk period they know of. I'm fucking sick of being helpless.

Have phone, have books, am introverted anyway, just am so goddamn sick of my bed and injuring myself taking the damn bin out. I have no idea my long term prognosis. Chest pain all the time sucks.

And I had a couple of hours feeling normal yesterday - that was almost worse, because I remember what I'm missing.

Getting my strength back is going to be a bitch. I'll do it, I know I will.

Anyone got any words of wisdom?

There’s a wonderful German course of vitamins and minerals you can take for 14 days. It really helps. Google Orthomol. Expensive, but this is your health we’re talking about. Good luck!

Oh, I am. Just the fatigue and strength comes and goes in unpredictable waves. I'm doing breathing exercises, mostly. That's as much exercise as I can tolerate.

I just want to remind you that you come across as an incredibly resourceful and wise woman..your posts reflect the work and self help you do for yourself. You have it all within you to get through this .. and .. this bit of helplessness and hopelessness is part of the process. Give in to it for a while and let your bottom lip proper stick out. Give yourself a huge hug.

Are you getting practical support? If you have friends nearby, call out for help those tasks like putting out the bins, shopping etc.

A friend got my pills the other day because they wouldn't deliver. Tesco have been good on socially distanced groceries. Bin, I'm doing myself because I have to. I'll get through and it improves every day.

Hey OP

Sending you virtual social distancing hugs and healing wishes xx

Keep up with the breathing exercises

as boring and exhausting as they are.

Vitamin C and healthy eating.

Enjoy sitting in your garden, watching and listening to nature.

Important to do some gentle lower limb exercises, even if you have to sit down...

1:Marching on the spot

2:Straight leg raise

3:Sit to stands (even if you can manage a couple)

And some gentle upper arm:

Bicep /Tricep curls

Wall press ups

Anything gentle, little and often... A couple every other day is better than nothing.

And alternative is your local physio dept might have advice on their website.

Feel free to message anytime if you just need a rant...

Long term health implications, job security etc..

Yes obviously being positive is great but recognise that when the bad periods hit they are all part of the recovery, perhaps especially more so given the shielding and lack of close contact with friends and family etc..

Just a thought, how about looking for a social media covid support group on fb or setting one up as an option for if you want to chat with others who are also in recovery..?

It's very weird. Lots of different presentations initially and it can go all over the place. My viral stage was the severity of mild-moderate proper flu, but this fatigue and lingering chest weakness is just something else.

You must be feeling like shit.

My approach is to try and use some ACT and mindfulness techniques.

To mot fight the feelings, know they are coming and know you you won't like them but let them come, let them sit where they need to, knowing they will pass. You won't feel like this forever. The feelings will pass.

Try not to be at odds with them. Like getting caught in a storm. You know you are going to get wet. It won't be pleasant getting caught in it, but allow the rain to flow over you and accept it

That sounds really tough...you just want to get well when you’ve been ill. I’d take it easy...if you have post viral fatigue, it’s your body still recovering. I wouldn’t push it...just try and find mentally and physically nourishing things. If this bug affects lungs and blood vessels, they need time to repair. I’m always one for really good quality probiotics...like really good ones. The best food you can manage. Agree that post covid support groups would be a good place to look. Best of luck xx

I've heard that post virus fatigue can be unreal. I'm no doctor but try and do what you can to prevent muscle wastage. Just keep some movement in your life, don't get pyjama paralysis.

We both had chest infections in jan which was for Lynn a first in her life, it took about five weeks before we didn't feel shattered even to the point of sleeping after walking the dogs during the day..

Whatever that was, and it took a young teenager just before the Christmas it was very unpleasant..

I cook when I have the energy. When that fails, cereal or beans. When that fails, protein powder.

For awhile I didn't want to eat, it hurt, and my fallback was people ringing me up and yelling at me

Patience, patience and patience. It's a bitch I know.

The fatigue comes in waves, but finding something to monitor/measure can help. I know someone who is using a fitbit to measure steps over a full week, to see the increase week on week and know that even when the fatigue knocks her on her arse for a day she is still making progress every week.

Anything you can use to see the glimmers of progress is a benefit.

I hope you're soon recovered and regain your strength. You will get through this

I'll get through. Just hitting a bump in the road. And yes, I've done stuff like this before. In the middle of it it can be a bit hard to see your way out. Taking it hour by hour. (Since I last posted I had a nap. Naps help)

Many years ago and after many tests, I was diagnosed with toxoplasmosis. Getting out of bed was a huge effort every day, my body ached and I wondered if I would ever get back to normal, back to my county netball and all the sports I loved. And I did, but not pushing myself too hard, good nutrition and baby steps each day. All I can say is that I have observed what a strong woman you are and one day you will be fully recovered. Try your best to stay positive. Are you getting any help at all? xx

Many years ago and after many tests, I was diagnosed with toxoplasmosis. Getting out of bed was a huge effort every day, my body ached and I wondered if I would ever get back to normal, back to my county netball and all the sports I loved. I have a support network and offers of help. My fwb picked up my prescriptions at the weekend.

I had a pain disorder in my 20s which I recovered from with baby steps, like you talk about. I had a great specialist physio. I have that in mind as my way out of this.

I definitely know this is a known phenomenon. It's so unlike any illness I've ever had, really disorienting in how random it is. Makes it harder to manage psychologically. They say mental health blips are part of the syndrome. If nothing else, the fact it's so unpredictably debilitating is depressing.

I have a support network and offers of help. My fwb picked up my prescriptions at the weekend.

I'm glad you have some help and can only imagine how bloody awful this must be for you. May be also contact your GP and push for some urgent rehab help or tertiary help and advice? x

I'm a bit hesitant to ask for help, I know the NHS is still struggling. I'm trying some very deep breathing and very basic movements to build my strength. I've had a few messages with advice, which I really appreciate.

I read this the other day when I was on holiday and couldn't comment. It really struck a chord, having been ill myself with what I suspect was the bastard virus over Christmas (early I know) very severely with breathing issues and also into Jan, Feb, March, April and right up until now, slowy getting almost better but not quite right. Whatever it is it's the worst I've ever felt and the longest I've ever felt ill but thankfully it's slowly going. I hope you're on the up soon OP, much love

COVID is not frequently not a mild illness I hope all of those who are suffering with it are soon through the awful knock on effects Scientists are learning every day more about it and I hope more treatments are soon readily available to help speed up recovery.

I have been tested 3 times now for Covid...thankfully all came back negative but did end up with severe pneumonia.

Chest pain can be tons of things...indigestion if you’re not eating, diaphragm tension if you’re breathing is off or your tense or nauseous. Vision...id get that checked. Prob low blood pressure but you don’t want to mess about.

You’ll be fine but I would call 111 and then come back here to dissect what they say xx

Staying positive and managing the mental aspects are so important in allowing the body to heal, I believe. Occupy yourself so you dont dwell on things, enjoy the moment, be in the present and enjoy it. Look for things that make you laugh.

111 or the GP plus also keep one special friend you can actually speak with on the phone to keep you calm and stop your thoughts racing. I've been exactly where you are earlier this year, even down to the vision issues (which is very freaky because I've not heard that from anyone else). Important to remember you're on the mend and things will slowly get better, just very slowly....

It's very weird. Lots of different presentations initially and it can go all over the place. My viral stage was the severity of mild-moderate proper flu, but this fatigue and lingering chest weakness is just something else."

I know this is over a week old but just to say that I had this virus end of March and I still struggle to get through the day without a nap or a lay down as a bare minimum.

I single parent also which has been an added strain. My GP had been amazing throughout and I know i’m very lucky there.

It’s played havoc with my T2 diabetes and there’s been days where I’ve just had the strength to chew anything.. I make protein shakes on those days.

It will take a while but you will slowly start to feel like you’re getting some part of your life back.

The mental health side needs supporting too, chat chat and more chat sweet x

To add on.. after the initial virus hit, I had 2 more bouts of ‘flu’ like symptoms.

Have basically been ill for the whole lockdown, only now am I starting to feel myself!

Ring 111 or if you have a COVID hub near you ring them too x

Seriously as I said

Get yourself to a medic

Just because cov sars2 is the flavour of the month does not mean that's what you have

You have isolated exceptionally well you may need treatment for something urgent that is not a contagious virus

Humans have other illnesses and organ problems which are not spread

You have had a negative test and shielded as if the virus would kill you

I'm very concerned you have something else that requires immediate treatment

Hi OP,

I totally understand - I have fibromyalgia and that has very similar symptoms. Things I find help:

Sleep (I nap a lot!)

Supplements - potassium and magnesium

Vitamin B12 spray from Holland and Barratt

Stretching

Epsom salt baths

Please don't feel like you can't go to your doctor. It might be worth checking out that it isn't something more like fibro or CFS as they often start after an illness and talking to a doctor friend of mine they are expecting a rise in these conditions with post COVID patients.

I know how rubbish fatigue is, sending you tons of love xx
