... and I'm feeling good. Makeup, skincare, hair, beauty etc

Hey why not.

Let's talk beauty, skincare, haircare, etc. Not just for women, you do you.

Tips, tricks, troubleshooting?

I'm pretty sure I'm no longer infectious so I'm messing around with makeup. Pulled out one of my deep purple lipsticks yesterday to have a play.

I wanted to get into oil cleansing but it was missing from my box when I got my recent delivery from Superdrug, so I'll wait for another time.

My skin's still a mess, but right now I've got other things on my mind. Nothing a bit of concealer won't fix.

My hair is getting ridiculously long. I straightened it yesterday on a whim. Holding out on curly girl until I get through my silicone heavy products.

Hi Swing, glad you are starting to feel better xx

I've been saying all through lockdown I need to start watching tutorials and practice more. I don't have much in the way of makeup. Can anyone recommend some basics I should have in my bag?

I usually have my eyelashes tinted because I can't be doing with mascara.

Sure thing.

What's your skincare/ skin like? (Your skin is your canvas and it matters a bit - you don't have to spend a fortune)

What are you trying to achieve? (Going out makeup, day to day, something else)

What are your facial features or problem areas?

I can recommend products that work for me, your mileage will of course vary, or sites where I get my information from.

Body shop camomile cleanser, BS vitamin e toner, and vitamin e lotion, ps I'm not a BS rep!

I also love the vanilla body butter after a hot bath or pre play as makes slipping ropes and handcuffs easy peasy when you a deviant sub plus smell like a white magnum.

I've also started using skinny tan gradual on legs arms and rest of me, with skinny tan face drops added to my vit e moisture cream as have to wear spf due to past mole removals.

I use BS sea scrub most days and do a vitamin c peel once a week, also great on your feet.

By no means does it get done religiously, when your out messing with horses all day, I don't think I look half bad for a old fat bird.

In the most general of terms, I think a bare basic kit for me would look like this:

Skincare: face wash, moisturiser (day/ night), hyaluronic acid, other problem areas, lip balm. Sunscreen.

Makeup: foundation (including using just concealer or BB cream or similar). A setting powder and/ or spray will help most people.

Eyeliner, mascara. Be still my eyeshadow slut heart, but it is optional (if you have it you need eyeshadow primer)

Some sort of brow product depending on what you're trying to achieve

A nude-for-you lipstick and a bolder colour (usually red). Lip liner if you have issues with lipstick feathering.

A neutral blush.

(I have way more than this )

I rarely wear make up apart from a bit of tinted lipbalm and mascara when i can be bothered

I cleanse and moisturise every day with boots no 7 products for sensitive skin

I'm really missing my monthly trip to my beautician to get my eyebrows waxed .. doing it myself is always a bit hit and miss...

I have a good skincare routine that suits me. I use Simple face wash and moisturiser and I use a lip balm as well.

It'll be going out makeup I want, I really don't have the patience for everyday makeup.

I think I have most of the makeup you mentioned. It's the eyes I need to practice really.

Thank you for all your help xx

Oh it's an art form for me, I mess around because it's fun.

My eyebrows have returned to their bushy masculine glory and I'm not even mad.

I think highly of No 7 products. I don't use their skincare much (most of mine is The Ordinary or Superdrug Vitamin E) but they do work well for me. I do know some with sensitive skin who don't get on with it, though.

My makeup regime:

Cleanse face, usually in the shower

Moisturise, leave to sink in 10 mins,

Primer, a green one is good for me as I have naturally rosy cheeks but just using a highlighter one atm,

Foundation, leave to dry,

Setting powder,

Bronzer over cheekbones and nose,

Eyeshadow, and apply a dark colour with eyebrow brush as i hardly have eyebrows,

Eyeliner and mascara.

I do this probably twice a week when I want to feel pretty

Most my products are no°7 from boots.

Eyes, it's mostly practice. Look at Robert Welsh and Wayne Goss on Youtube for realistic tutorials (you don't necessarily need the products they suggest). Other people exist, although some tutorials are "looks great on Instagram, is rubbish in real life"

The best way to show off your eyes is by using opposite colours. I have pale blue eyes, and colours like orange, gold, bronze make them pop, whereas blues and greens tend to make them look grey. It's the opposites on the colour wheel (if you have brown eyes you can wear any colour) - there's a million sources of "best colours for X eye colour"

Eyeshadow primers help eyeshadows stay and can enhance colour. I use Nyx HD for my everyday (not too expensive, colour payoff is OK) and Urban Decay Primer Potion when I really want the colour to pop. A lot of shadows can now be used with a dampened brush (although honestly I'm scared of ruining the eyeshadow and rarely do).

Some more glittery eyeshadows and loose pigments require glitter glue. I use the one from Nyx.

Eyeliner- pencil is the easiest, although you can also mimic this with a thin brush and eyeshadow. Most of the Urban Decay 24/7 liners review very well. Mac ones have a good reputation, too.

Eyeshadow placement depends on your eye shape- you're creating light and shadows, like in a drawing. You generally want to mix textures, an all matte look is flat and an all shimmer look can be a bit disco ball (although if you want, more power to you).

Brushes - ELF (their website), No 7, Ecotools are my go-tos, some people rate Real Techniques (I've not had much luck)

Which eyeshadow- look for reviews, they can be incredibly hit and miss. I hear a lot of good things about Sleek (although I only have a transition shade and some loose pigments). Revolution get mixed reviews (I've got my first palettes from them and am trying to make them work). Depends on how much you want to spend. My favourite brands are Urban Decay, Mac, and Pat McGrath. But always find a mix of reviews or reliable reviews because even expensive brands have hits and misses, and you don't want to spend £40+ on a dud palette. (my main source of makeup reviews is Temptalia, although she tends to only do mid-high end and is America based)

Make up in addition to my above skin care isn't worn unless I'm out out

I have three looks all with similar base and different toppings

I do own brows and pretty natural just lightly shaped and tidied and generally just a simple brown pencil shape ans a lil brown brow drama to keep neat.

Blessed with long lashes but top them up with body shop fibre lash and mascara combo, but as a lens wearer I find any mascara gives me sore eyes so I've just invested in some of the magnetic lashes (not the stuff that sticks to eyeliner so shall see)

Once moisturised I use a miracle blur or insta blur where needed and use a mix of foundations a full coverage for jaw line cheeks and a lighter for less problem areas, then set with a magic mineral powder, a little concealer under eyes, then a bronzer on sun-kissed bits and a little definition where needed on cheeks with blush.

Eyes depend they either smokey black, brown or bronze shadow and lighter under brows, liquid liner at lash line. Depends how naughty I'm feeling to how much I build up eyes.

Lips are generally red (slut) plum (bit gothy) baby pink (good girl) cerise (cheeky) bronze (day time) toffee (natural)

Spritzed with body shop fixing spray it generally last through a tough session without looking like the walking dead after lol

I've actually stopped wearing make up since not going out and I'm actually getting used to the nakedness and much more relaxed about not wearing it.

I have awful freckles and markings which no amount of good skin care could tackle and only thing that covered it was full courage foundation.

So I'm quite happy to have saved a fortune on expensive make up.

With regards to superdrug, did you get the glitch the other week on make up?

Glitch? There was a sale, and I took part. I got some Revolution palettes.

People are embracing freckles, to the point of drawing them on, these days.

I'm very much of the school of, embrace yourself as you are and do what you want with it. I'm just as happy bare faced as I am full faced.

Morning gorgeous xx

I have a question for you all. I have very fine, curly hair that likes to go very frizzy if I brush it. So what can I put in it in-between washes to help the curls so I can still brush it without looking like I've been electrocuted?

Short answer, you can’t really.

I comb mine when it’s wet but after that I just run my fingers through it. I wrap it in a silk scrunchie to sleep when it’s wet. It keeps the curls soft and shiny.

Lots of my friends have tried the curly girl method and had good things to say about it. I’m thinking of doing too

Hmm. As some of you may have figured out, my knowledge is from what I know, and my hair is thick and wavy.

How are you conditioning it? I get frizz from inadequate conditioning or damage, including heat damage. Leave in conditioner on top of regular, deep conditioning treatment?

Some people suggest that brushing curls is bad full stop, but I haven't figured out how you... don't brush your hair...?

Ahh bugger I can brush it when it's wet and it's fine but for the next few days I either look like a very frizzy poodle if I brush it or very messy if I don't. It's so annoying.

I wash mine in the morning so I never sleep with it wet. I've heard of the curly girl method but it's not much different to what I already do.

Thank you darling xx

I never use heat on my hair. I don't straighten it or blow dry it. I condition the ends with a really nice coconut conditioner but if I put it on the top of my hair it's get dirty really easily.

I rarely brush mine between washes but then it gets knotty and looks a mess. It's a catch 22

Hello Sparkles! My hair is obviously different from yours but I'm trying to embrace my natural curls more and not heat processed damaged hair.

Instead of brushing it, invest in a tangle teezer and get a water spritz bottle, it will help separate knots but leave you without that frizz. Look at silicone free products, there's a really good range by Umberto Gianni that's on offer a lot, you can have a look at a leave in conditioner. There's a really good YouTube video about refreshing your hair post wash day by Marisa's curls that's worth a look.

Also, if you do the quiz at Naturally Curly, it will tell you your hair porosity, the curl type you have and what sort of products and routines will work best for you. There's also a really good Facebook group called Curly Girl UK Support Group - women are really knowledgeable there and lots of them have hair similar to yours and the same issues. It is all trial and error, I've only started my journey about three weeks ago and I'm still learning what works best for me (shrinkage is a nightmare for me) but if you do want any more help, you can always message me.

Sorry for rambling on a bit but I can't work out how to shorten this message.

I started doing (more or less) the curly girl method at the start of lockdown on the basis that i couldn't go out anywhere so it doesn't didn't matter too much how hair looked. First couple of weeks were a bit grim and it felt weird not using shampoo just double conditioner but omg glad I persevered as longer I do it the better my curls get..... Still not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, beachy waves with occasional ringlets is fine tho. Best tip I can suggest is to use a microfibre towel or one of those microfibre turban thingies to "dry" wet hair with, failing that use an old t-shirt, reduces the static and helps keep the folicals smooth so it fizzes less..... And make a leave in conditioning spray to spritz hair with a few times throughout the day, just a couple of teaspoons of whatever conditioner you're using in the shower dissolved into however much cooled boiled water it takes to fill the spray bottle with. Spray midlengths to ends and scrunch with hands, it really encourages the curls to fall into place. Oh and I only comb it through lightly with one of those wide toothed afro combs to get any knots out and then give it a really good spray with the leave in conditioner, scrunch, shake and then leave it well alone. I'd love to hear what works for other curly girls out there as I'm still just a novice xx

This is brilliant. I'd started plopping with microfibre cloth with some results although I hadn't figured out how to reproduce it. I've decided to work my way through my silicone heavy products before trying again in earnest (although have largely abandoned heat and drying with a regular towel). But I'm definitely going to be getting back into it once I'm through the stuff I've got.

Ah of course I would. I love these threads, I've really learned so much about makeup and hair from them and picked up some bargains along the way, thanks for starting these threads Inaswing!

Washing your hair upside down really helps with volume and curl formation, scrunch as you go along. I think that soon I might invest in a diffuser to give even more volume though.

"Special interest", what can I say

I'll give that a go. That makes sense. I suspect my wave/curl pattern is a bit fragile and needs all the help it can get.

I'm really pleased to see a rise in interest in "black owned beauty" as a political response (although I'm not sure shopping is a good solution to political problems). Particularly "brands in this category exist beyond Pat McGrath and Fenty"

Haven't tried it, but I notice that Elf has a Body Lava dupe now (I get their emails)

They recommend ibuprofen for epilating and waxing. I assume it'd be similar?

The internet says do it just after a shower and pluck at the base of the hair in the direction of growth.

"I've had to do my own eyebrows but it hurts alot. Normally I have them waxed. Is then anything I can do to make plucking them less painful? Any tips be most appreciated x

They recommend ibuprofen for epilating and waxing. I assume it'd be similar?

The internet says do it just after a shower and pluck at the base of the hair in the direction of growth.

Ah ok thank you, I will try anything. I've been told the hair follicles are very strong rooted. One make my eyes water. Thank you again xx"

Try stretching the skin taut before plucking. Easier said than done, but I found that helpful. That and wipe with erm, witch hazel before you do it.

The Bronze palette looks gorgeous but I suspect I could dupe it, not least with Naked Honey, which I adore.

Fair enough! I'm not sure I run to Natasha Denona (she says, talking about Pat McGrath FFS).

Check reviews, sometimes the Nars palettes are hit and miss. If you want Orgasm itself, Sleek Rose Gold is an excellent affordable dupe.

"Morning gorgeous xx

I have a question for you all. I have very fine, curly hair that likes to go very frizzy if I brush it. So what can I put in it in-between washes to help the curls so I can still brush it without looking like I've been electrocuted? "

I have very curly hair, i wash it every morning using alberta balsam shampoo, then condition it, rinse it, dab it with a towel, comb it, i never ever brush it as that makes it frizzy, combing it straightens it for a short time just to get a parting in it but i shake my head and it bounces back up, it's wild curls and some ringlets, i love it i never use a drier or straightners on it. I have some stuff i use on it sometimes to define the curls but to be honest it looks the same either way but i put it on cus i love the smell

If it needs sort of tidying up during the day i run my fingers through it

I think Biotin and Collagen is the product he used. I've heard about the benefits of collagen since childhood as bone broth which is rich in collagen is a staple of our diet in my culture so am fairly confident there are benefits to it but not aware if it extends to hair. Also Thomas DeLauer from YouTube is a big advocate of incorporating it into keto diets which I'm also on. Giving it a go is probably only way to find out. It doesn't cost much for the shampoo and conditioner, around six or seven pounds each and supplements were similar for half year supply. It just seems that there are so many fads and trends to make us try new things in these industries which have no real effect. But if my family trust my uncle and can see it for themselves and have also started to try then I may as well join the club. I shall report back in six months.

I'm so glad I saw this thread.

Does anyone use/know of a good mascara for sensitive eyes? I've tried the No7 one, but that was oddly hit and miss (had one tube - great. Second tube caused a reaction.)

Thank you in advance.

I suppose every sensitivity is different. It's hard to say. The only one I've ever reacted to is Maybelline Snapscara. Do you react, in general, to other skincare or cosmetics, and do you know what ingredients you might be sensitive to?

I generally do well with No 7 but I haven't tried their mascara

I seem to react quite badly to Urban Decay make-up for some reason. But it's mostly mascara that causes issues.

Now you've mentioned it, I'll definitely look into the ingredients. Seems obvious, but I never considered it before.

Thank you.

Oh that's frustrating. I hope returns aren't a hassle for you.

I find an issue in skincare/ cosmetics is that natural (or vegan, or cruelty free) is conflated with good for sensitive skin. While the former may be things to aspire to, it says absolutely nothing about whether it'll make a person react. It's irritating (pun).

Something for later probably, shamelessly stolen from Reddit. Anyone fancy playing palette roulette? As in, get other people to choose eyeshadow shades or palettes (in your collection) for you to play with? (On Reddit it's a way to use under utilised items in your collection)

I'm not sure if anyone help but i have Essential Tremors and (obviously) i am very shaky. Before lockdown i had my eye lashes dyed and occasionally used mascara when needed. Now my eye lashes are so fair and can hardly be seen. However putting mascara on is a nightmare because I'm so shaky and i seem to get it everywhere and it clogs a bit on my left eye, which is the hardest to do. It was ok when i didn't have to use it all the time.I use a Rimmel waterproof one as Rimmel cosmetics don't irratate my eyes and skin (i also have Rosacea).

Can anyone recommend a mascara that's waterproof and goes on easily? Thank you

Tricky. I Googled, and found a site trend-able which suggested positions to put a post it note on your face to minimise smudging around the eye? And criticises mascara shields.

Do you have a way to dye your own lashes? I know kits exist (although of course rosacea may complicate that and I can't imagine that'd be easy with a tremor...)

I don't know if it'd help with fair lashes (mine are naturally black) but I find my lashes look much fuller with black eyeliner at the base of the lashes. And very few people look closely enough to see that that's wobbly (mine is imperfect). (This may be too much for you too, I don't know!)

Thank you. I can't dye them myself as I'm to shaky, same for eyeliner, i usually stab my eye or put it on my cheek, or both

I can usually wipe smudging off around the eye using a wipe or cotton bud but the actual mascara clumps on the lashes. I mostly do the right eye first, then it clumps on the left (which is much harder to do) but i have also done it the other way round and it's still clumps on the left lol !!!

I will try the post it notes

Anyone else here for mask makeup? Trends pointing to big brows and eyes because the lower half of our faces are covered up. I'm doing nothing important today and am sporting Insta brows plus over the top eyes because you can't see my nose down.

And skipping foundation. I'm so here for that
