Here, there and everywhere!

So we're nearly out of lock down and car dealers are back open so I'm thinking of changing car.

No real reason why, its just I've had it a few years and fancy a change

Current car is a merc slk55 amg and my two previous cars were a boxster and a Toyota mr2 roadster. I do love getting the roof down but I don't really need as much power as this one has.

Its only me in it 95% of the time so no real need for practicality so what do you fab lot suggest?

Budget is fairly flexible depending on the car.

But the first person to suggest something like a 1.6 206cc will get a poke in the eye.

I would only ever advise an Audi. You could go for a TTRS, RS5 cab, S5 cab, R8 spider if its affordable?

Personally I dont like Mercedes but I am a fan of Audi and BMW. Some nice 2,3 and 4 series cabs out there.

I had a mr2 roadster as my first ever sports car which started a bit of a love affair for two seaters - you can pick up an older Aston vantage for a steal at the moment however the running costs will make up for that - I was paying about £1000 for a main dealer service each year - I’m currently in a jag f type, the coupe has a very reasonable boot but the convertible will be more fun;) ... you can pick them up with a turbo charged 2 litre at the moment which is almost as nippy as the V6. Personally I think it’s a nicer drive than the vantage was and is more modern inside. Or something a little more on the outside bets - a convertible mustang. I have the V8 coupe - have to say it was incredibly practical and very fun all at the same time. I just missed two seater fun too much so had to come back

I know what you're saying, but the VW group literally share entire platforms.

Take the Bentayga/Q7/Cayenne/Urus. They all have the same platform, gearboxes and subframes. If I was gonna drop 200k on a Bentley or Lamborghini, I don't want people buying the same car with an Audi badge for a third of the price

Wouldn't you be better off second hand? They depreciate like lead balloons, find one a couple years old so half the money if not less and barely used

Yes.... no sense buying brand new unless some major deal available. Even used you hit big on deprecation , there’s no way around it , if you buy you lose, better to lease things that depreciate

Unless it's going to appreciate like a limited edition or something, then no car is worth buying new agree with you completely"

That's why I'm sticking with my old Triumph saloon

50 years old in August, and still impressing the ladies!

I must change that knackered UJ, though....

The government will definitely do another tax break/purchase next car incentive scheme like they did in 2008.

But I expect it will only be on the most greenest of cars.

That said check out the e class hybrid diesel from 2012 onwards

Or the c class petrol hybrid if Mercedes is your thing.

If your slk had the horrible 5 speed automatic mush box anything for merc in the last 7 years is an improvement

I did actually look at an rx8 when I bought the porsche many years ago but it wasn't for me.

Jag are a UK based manufacturer that employee over 100,000 people (directly or indirectly) from line operators through to the supply chain. These 100,000 people pay UK taxes that fund our NHS and other vital services. Wouldn’t it be good if everyone decided not to buy foreign but bought British instead ensuring the lives and wellbeing of these people as well as help keeping our own country and economy on track instead of our colleagues over the water

If your budget is 35k and it has to be sporty convertible

Porsche boxster 981

(although I prefer the hardtop cayman coupe)

Get a chronopack with a bored out 3.4 flat 6 engine over the 2.7 with a manual gearbox if you don't mind stiring the gears.

They are set to be a future classic with there now defunct flat 6 boxster designed engine.

What you pay for it in 2020 you'll be able to sell it for similar money in 2025

Our other cars are British so we are doing our part for the British economy but can you say that about everything you buy, not just cars. Thinking about it even British cars have foreign parts in them, that’s nothing new, so not every penny we spend on a British car will go into the British money pot.

That becuase the are all part state owned. Renault has just had another bailout.

So their government incentives French purchases and level duties on cars outside the economic zone.

That and the French love their diesel dino juice which French car manufacturers make for pennies compared to the rest of europe

Unless it's going to appreciate like a limited edition or something, then no car is worth buying new agree with you completely

It's a 2000 saloon, early mk.2.

Has the looks of the Stag (Stag was developed from a mk.1 2000 and the management liked it enough to copy the styling on other models) but with a straight 6 engine rather than the fragile but glorious-sounding V8

I have taken delivery to a new ( new to me ) car recently.

Test drive was different. Sales bloke in the back both of us wearing gloves and face masks.

I traded in my fiat 500 for a mini.

Ooooh. The Dream Car for me is a Tesla PD100. I saw one and the man who owned it asked if I wanted to have a look.....WOW. Black on black. iPad. So sleek and smooth and classy. Fell in love.

Also it’s much easier to suggest things if you have a budget in mind.

A new SLK55 is over £55k, but a used one can be had for not much more than £15-18k

And the boxster and MR2 are easily available under £5k where as the boxster will easily

Run up over £45k if wanted new.

Nothing like a new car to turn a big pile of cash into a small pile of cash in a few years

If you like the Alfa 4c so much, have a look at its big brother, the proper one, the 8c.

Many have suggested fords new cortina, sorry mustang. You couldnt give me one of those, unless Mr Shelby himself tinkered with it and it was made of steel not pvc and left hand drive. The plastic ones dont corner and melt around the exhuast.

In my humble opinion

The 8c however, beast of a car!

The OP Stated the budget earlier in the thread. On or around £35K depending on the resale of the current vehicle

"Jaguar F-Type or Alfa Romeo 4C

Alfa is out of the window as it has no power steering.

I like the f type but I'm getting older and higher mileage than the z4 I've seen. "

We had a Z4 only kept it for 10 months Will didn’t like it but been used to TVR’s and Lotus before we bought it, so guess it’s what type of car you like personally.

"Buy British.

Use your money to help our economy. Boils my piss seeing people walk into a foreign car manufacturers show room.

What do you class as British? Even the jag which I'm seriously

considering isnt truly British as they are owned by an Indian firm

Jag are a UK based manufacturer that employee over 100,000 people (directly or indirectly) from line operators through to the supply chain. These 100,000 people pay UK taxes that fund our NHS and other vital services. Wouldn’t it be good if everyone decided not to buy foreign but bought British instead ensuring the lives and wellbeing of these people as well as help keeping our own country and economy on track instead of our colleagues over the water "

Jlr spent millions developing and building their engine plant in Wolverhampton, only been up and running 5 minutes but plans are now afoot to stop all engine production and fit all Jlr cars with BMW engines.

Reliable? BMW? Don't make me laugh

They're known for shitting their internals out, and used to be worse than Rover K-series for popping head gaskets. And rusted worse, too

It's only because Clarkson liked BMW that they escaped the bar room criticism that Rover got

"I would only ever advise an Audi. You could go for a TTRS, RS5 cab, S5 cab, R8 spider if its affordable?

Personally I dont like Mercedes but I am a fan of Audi and BMW. Some nice 2,3 and 4 series cabs out there. "

Not a fan of Audi, but the R8 Spider poster above mentioned looks cool. I have a BMW so can recommend them. Mercedes is my top choice and was going to get one, but lockdown happened! Damn it so close and yet so far. Will be getting one in the near future hopefully

"So we're nearly out of lock down and car dealers are back open so I'm thinking of changing car.

Worth considering a MX5 or Fiat 125 Spider (Abarth version too) the Fiat is an MX5 with a different body and lower pricing.
