What kind of budget did you have in mind and what will you use it for? Gaming? Browsing? Office apps?

Up to £500 but prefer to save on money. I want to use it for work,office apps etc.

Brands i've had and liked are Toshiba, Asos, and Lenovo.

They just seem to run well and last me a long time despite constantly using them.

If you just want to browse the web and run office type programs, then ANY laptop will be fine. I generally advise to stick with the bigger names such as Toshiba, HP, and Lenovo, because they have great support and customer service. I wouldn't buy Apple unless you really NEED to for something specific. I would also avoid Chromebooks if you want to install programs on it.

To make your user experience better, you should look for SSD hard-drive as this is what gives you the near instant power on beyond that more RAM is better and look for either Intel i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 processors (i5 & Ryzen 5 are even better)

I always buy Asus, very good quality, better design and parts, still using one from 6 years ago, battery still lasts around 6 hours.

having work for a company who get hundreds come in daily, dell, hp, Lenovo, Toshiba are basic cheap parts and highly faulty, poor battery life. Acer is getting better but still not great.

Make sure it's one with a ssd.

Browse the web don't just order from one site.

Probably intel based as amd tend to be noisy fan as they heat up quickly.

In my 20+ years of working in IT, Toshiba & HP have always been the MOST reliable and Toshiba in particular win the "Most Reliable" in industry awards year on year. Asus are fine, and I would have no issues in recommending them if the model is best specification for the money but they are certainly NOT higher quality than other brands.

As for AMD vs Intel processors. I personally prefer Intel, but in reality for home use you are unlikely to see any difference. You can't compare a 6 year old laptop with something new, processor technology changes at a massive rate and there will be huge differences in that amount of time.

At the sub £500 level, all the laptops are effectively "Budget Models", and you will not get the same quality as a business grade device, but any brand that you've heard of will do the job just fine.

Hi,

I've worked with many brands over many years and for laptops, I'd go with Dell. Especially the Latitude models. They are very robust. I'd go with at least an Intel i5 processor with no less than 8GB of ram with an SSD hard disk.

I broke my HP by dropping it recently & had it switched from a hard disk to a 500gb SSD drive with 8gb ram instead of 4.

It's a flying machine now, what a difference! Boots up in seconds & no more endless chuntering away doing mystery tasks & running slow. Wish I'd gone SSD from new.
