Food you thought was exotic as a kid...

Under the Duvet

Sugar cubes, bread you sliced with a knife, spring onions, real butter....my nan, who lived across the road, had all of the above and as a kid I thought they were wonderfully exotic as we rarely had them at home.

What were the exotic foodstuffs of your youth?

My dad used to go sea fishing and sometimes he would bring back huge crabs that were still alive,i still remember the squeal they made as my mum dropped them into a large pot of boiling water. It was cruel as fk but they tasted good

My mum was the same with tea, couldn't stand it so we only ever had coffee.

So tea, in a teapot,was what I aspired to

Not a food but I always thought Scarborough was in Spain. All the kids I went to school with went there for their holidays but I actually went to Spain!

Also not food but I had lived on the continent until I was 15 and then my parents returned to the UK and Yorkshire. It was the 80s and most of my fellow school kids had only been as far as Leeds or Sheffield I was constantly being asked the time etc so they could hear the posh english kid talk

Apples and oranges.

I lived abroad when I was a child, my garden had mangoes, coconuts and rambutans (similar to lychees) but we only had apples when they were imported by boat.

Apparently there was always a mad rush to buy them when they were in the shops

This. Square bread. My mum made our bread so it was always shaped different to the other kids' butties with their Mothers Pride square sandwiches. All I wanted was a proper square sarnie.

My ex did this kinda thing to her kids haha. She would get coca cola. Kids got cheap if they were lucky, if not it'd be squash.
