Well done to everyone in Bristol today - probably not the best way to get rid of that statue of Edward Colston but it’s definitely opened up a lot of eyes to Britain’s involvement in slavery.

Top work.

Put it in a museum, where it can be viewed along with its historical context.

I disagree, it's disgusting what they did. I hope they are found and charged for criminal damage.

These protests are only about making crime not protesting.

And how much more is it now going to cost Bristol council and the general public to fish it out the water safely, preserve it, get it to museum, find, chase and prosecute the (idiots) who threw it and not to mention clean and tidy up all the rubbish they left behind during their "quiet" protest!!

Oh and let's hope we dont have to spend our precious and dwindling nhs resources and hospital beds treating them all when they all get c.19 that we are meant to all be staying in for or in groups of less than 6 not 6000!!!

The problem with these protests is that it's increasing the risk of the virus spreading, and studies are now showing the virus is more dangerous for black and Asian people. So, aren't we actually just increasing the risk of death to black people by clumping together during this pandemic?? It seems counter productive to the cause!?

Exactly! When the American solders tore down the Sattue of Saddam Hussein there was celebration so why are people angry now? Admittedly,it is a criminal offence but it's also offensive to celebrate slave traders and just adds to the instutional racism that is ever present.

Hi just thought I'd give a insight into this. I was at the protest (taking risks I know) and apart from the statue all was very peaceful. I had to return back through the march path and can say there was a very small amount of litter and again no violence.

In terms of removing history and if names should be changed I would say they so. All of the names related to slavers could be changed with a plague on the buildings remembering the old names. The history can be moved to museums so the history can be explained in context

Strange how we keep hearing about Britains' involvement in the deplorable slave trade, but nothing about all the British people who were enslaved by - Italians, Arabs, Norwegians, French and others.

Yes slavery is wrong and vile, but remember, Britain was following the lead of MANY other countries, some of whom enslaved Britons.

Slavery is very prevalent today. Look at Libya and the Middle East. Never seems to get a mention sadly.

A lot more of those protesters wore masks than any I've seen in parks, beaches and really every day.

The number of deaths have always been high in the UK without protestors.

The UK has its own history of slave trading, focus on your own country and its gritty past.

What did you all do regarding the windrush lives? Nothing.. just qualified nurses and other professionals brought over and treated like shit.

So if we do nothing, nothing happens because clearly there are more closed minded people.

So we should celebrate slavery in the centre of a city? No we petitioned for over 10 years and millions of signatures to be ignored. They can now decide what to put there instead

Is the statue specifically celebrating his involvement in slavery ? He was part of the company for about 10 years. Outside of that he was an MP, did a lot of charity work, establishing alms houses, hospital school as examples.

The British history is full of mistakes, as a nation we’ve made lots of mistakes -damn we have a whole museum of artifacts we’ve stolen from others and have the cheek to call it the British museum.

It’s a history that shouldn’t be erased but in fact talked about. Make the generations question who is that person, why is that street name called what it is, then they learn what has past and teach them not to repeat it

Was my exact thought also. Should have been taken down years - if not decades - ago. And no that doesn't mean erasing history, obviously it's existence should be documented and remain a matter of public record. That doesn't mean we have to leave a statue up like it's something to be proud of. Let's leave statues for those things and those figures that are actually worthy of such display.

Might one take that argument up with the us and UK military forces when they bombed the shit out the ancient building in Baghdad ,one of the corner stones of miderm civilisation.

Just because something his part of our history doesn't mean it should be celebrated.

Maybe an idea would be collecting the artifiactes and placing them into central place. Instead of being a shrine in open spaces but instead as reminded as to how far we have come when slavery was widespread

As a Scotsman living not far from Bristol, heres my two cents worth.... apologies to the snowflakes who cant understand it...

I agree the statue probably shouldnt have stood this long, like many others in the UK, however, and this is a big HOWEVER...

Tearing it down the way its been done because your petitions for years and years have fallen on deaf ears...that is just downright thuggery. You're no better than vandals and looters.

The protests are supposed to be peaceful, can you honestly say most of them are around the world?!

Absolute nonsense when we have more important things like a virus to get rid of that is actually killing hundreds of people in the UK per day.

Gandhi was a paedophile who slept naked with his own grand niece to test his abstinence from sex.

That's not an opinion it's a fact from her mouth.

He had disgusting views of Africans and was part on annex of east and west Pakistan that lead to a civil war that killed over 3 million with the creation of Bangladesh and Pakistan.

It also didn't help when the UK pulled out of India they gave the new government 1 month to get ready.

Sounds like the uk has form with this piss poor brexit planning

Some food for thought as this is a debate:

6000 on a protest or 6000 on a beach. Yes both breach lockdown but at least one done so for a serious reason, let's not forget that, when we bracket the 2 together. I know which 6000 people I'd rather see fined.

Lots of people of all races have called for more education so let's be careful of erasing history when it could be used for education, this is not celebration just keeping it there.

No matter the rationale, vandalism is not the answer, nor is trolling someone or harassing them, if a young black girl peacefully protesting was crushed by the statue then what?

Unfortunately the manners in which the public display their opinions rightly or wrongly is often illegal and unlawful yet celebrated. In a world where the young are impressionable and want change, what example does that set to them.

Yeah, simple folk. Society is made up of a spectrum of mental capability in various subjects from simple folk through to brain surgeons and elite decision makers, yet our voices on fab carry equal weight and often simple shouts louder because it has no fear of ridicule or doesn't know better. One of the sadder points of a democracy, but without an it we can't have equality... I'm an expert in chemicals and human behaviour, but I know nothing about civil engineering or nursing, and I try to recognize that and keep it in check when I open my mouth, innit...

"Well done to everyone in Bristol today - probably not the best way to get rid of that statue of Edward Colston but it’s definitely opened up a lot of eyes to Britain’s involvement in slavery.

Top work.

Get a life buttercup !

It's called history ....slavery as been around for every color of the human species ! Since the stone age.

So we should celebrate slavery in the centre of a city? No we petitioned for over 10 years and millions of signatures to be ignored. They can now decide what to put there instead

So you think it's acceptable to destroy historical artefacts... Just because you are on some sort of a selfright moral crusade !

Maybe the Bristol Crusaders should have a very close look at themselves ? Over the year's they are all guilty of supporting 3rd world modern day slavery ! With buying clothes etc from UK shop's made in the slum's of Calcutta etc .

Calcutta you mean Kolkata...old boy

You do know Indian doesn't belong the empire anymore?

It's also the main financial hub of India and most of the employment is in that sector. They even have running water and sanitation don't you know.

You mean Bangladesh, you want to see what happens a LEDC country when it main ascot of economy fails just look how people have 100s of miles just to be fed.

These kind of economies can just adjust overnight to the industry going away.

With that said I remember in my time in Bristol it having a diverse high street with even some independent vintage clothing shops.

Bunching up an entire group of people and saying they are one characterization is literally the definition of racism

Well what ever that bunch of people pulling that statue down ! It was out and out vandalism!

You wouldn't be best please if a bunch of people came around and pulled half your house down ...because they disagreed with you ."

Your eloquent response to a logical dissemination of your racism is

"Well what ever"(sic)

If my house was built by slaves and their descendants tore it down. I wouldn't be surprised

"This is not about erasing history. It's about not celebrating things that should never happened with a statue in a city centre. It belonged in a museum with context as to who he was and just what he did, including the god he did for the city of Bristol. It did not belong in the city centre

I see it a bit like a ww2 sub that's been sunk and washed up on a beach and left there rusting. It's history, it happened, but nobody is celebrating it, they're recognising and reflecting.... I haven't seen a slavery march in Bristol lately to my knowledge.... "

Did anyone read this or all too busy offering a view? I know it's not gonna be popular, but.....

The statue should be taken down. But not this way. I hope the people who did it are charged for damaging public property.

You wouldn't be best please if a bunch of people came around and pulled half your house down ...because they disagreed with you .

Your eloquent response to a logical dissemination of your racism is

"Well what ever"(sic)

If my house was built by slaves and their descendants tore it down. I wouldn't be surprised

Please don't accuse me of being racist!

I'm as much a slave as the next man !

Are you?

I would imagine a TV/TS knows discrimination pretty well.... "

You know black TV/TS people exist. And this comparison is genuinely offensive to their experiences.

"Strange how we keep hearing about Britains' involvement in the deplorable slave trade, but nothing about all the British people who were enslaved by - Italians, Arabs, Norwegians, French and others.

Yes slavery is wrong and vile, but remember, Britain was following the lead of MANY other countries, some of whom enslaved Britons."

So if someone breaks into your house you'll retaliate by breaking in someone else's who hasn't done you wrong??
