Do you paddle your own canoe?

Meaning are you financially independent without help from a partner or the government?

Do you run a house and pay all the bills yourself?

I was having a conversation about this today at work and a colleague told me I was in the minority as a single woman.

And most people have help.

Surely this isn't true

I do. I am single and pay all my bills even when I lived with a partner I still paid all my bills and rent etc and sometimes his share of the rent as well.I don't see why anyone male or female who works shouldn't be responsible for their own bills etc.

I agree - but I guess a lot of women have children and their partner or the government pay their rent etc ..

There's no room for luxuries and sometimes food either, but I survive.

My household bills hit the £750 a month mark, and I normally pick up between £800-£900 a month

Still have to get my travel out of what's left, gas, electric, food, toiletries and household stuff

It's fucking tough

On a mooch

Before I left home home, I used to hand over half of my wages to the household.

Since leaving I’ve paid my own bills and rent, with no help from family, parents or government. Even when I lived with someone, he could afford to cover our household expenses, but that’s not me and I paid my equal half

Yes, of course.

I grew up in poverty and I've tried my best to protect myself against ending up back there.

I've also seen money used as a tool to exert control in relationships, so I would always want to make money for myself rather than have a partner hold the purse strings.

I don't think so, and to be honest even if I could I doubt I would. When I was off sick (remember when I had the breakdown a few years back) one of my sick notes ran out on the Friday and I couldn't get a Drs appointment til the Monday so a 2 day gap. Work thought they'd do me a favour so I didn't lose out and paid me holiday for those 2 days.

Holy fuckballs, caused a right shit storm and I had to pay back £886 in housing benefit for earning whilst claiming even though it was clear to see what had happened. It's completely put me off claiming any kind of benefit in the future. It can so easily go tits up and leave you in a worse position than you were.

I've thought about a second job for ages, shit bit is I never know what shifts I'm on from one week to the next, so planning is non existent, plus I'm the "reliable" one who covers shifts so I'm regularly getting called in, or asked to swap at very short notice. I could look for something else and make my current job my second job I guess, but they'd have to work round me not the other way round. It's scary, I've been at my place 11 years now.

Yep - I (Mr) have been financially independent since I left home at 16. Worked since I was 16 and never claimed a penny from the state. Have been through tough times but worked damned hard, have a good job and now enjoy a very comfortable lifestyle. And I put a large amount of being where I am now financially down to having to be independent and get through some tough times alone.

I’m drilling into my teenage lad now work hard, educate yourself, get qualifications, fill your CV and take the odd risk. From

The earliest age possible be responsible for yourself and you’ll be ok

Yep, totally financially independent. House, car, bills all paid for by me. Only income I have other than my wage is the basic child benefit. Never claimed for any other benefits although fairly sure that there have been times I would have been entitled to.

Sometimes it is hard to make ends meet but we manage & it is satisfying knowing that everything I have I have earned.

I do. I made a conscious effort to buy a house that I really like rather than live in something I despised because it’s cheaper, and have since paid off everything I owe other than my mortgage. It’s a huge pressure that’s disappeared and I don’t want to end up having to borrow unless I really have no other option.

Im pretty selfish, so I much prefer to be independent.

Live alone (with my dog)

Bring in just below 2 bags a month

Zero debt

Exceptionally rare I use my credit cards or store accounts (i'd rather pay outright)

I'll be buying & running a car in the next 2 months when my ban finishes

Then i'll probably think about buying my house
