what car do you drive?

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

i know its of no importance or status what you drive.

but travelling the m6 today i noticed that so many cars were at most a few years old.

i dont know where people get their money

im driving a 12 year old impreza,i know its quicker than most cars but its worth about 800 quid

between me and nik we earn a fair bit but the idea of spending 15k on a car is a big no no

We've got a couple of Jags. It's nice having common tastes in cars because we're both happy to drive either car. Luckily we both despise kitchen chair seating positions, we both hate wibbly wobbly suspension and we both abso-fucking-lutely detest front wheel drive cars. And diesels - hate those too. Well, not hate, but just can't imagine a scenario where exchanging money for a diesel seemed like a good idea as we only do around 20~25k per year between us.

Just don't like them, sorry. Don't like the power delivery, don't like the lack of useable RPM, and don't like the clatter they make (or the absence of a nice engine/exhaust note in the case of diesels which have a lot of sound insulation to shut them up).

They're also far, far too complicated nowadays and suffer too many reliability issues between injector faults, turbocharger failure (or waste gates), dual mass flywheel failures, EGR problems, diesel particulate filter problems etc etc etc. Makes a good old fashioned petrol engine look fantastic!

I sold a very nice black 3 litre 1977 Ford Capri to a chap who pestered me to sell it to him, around the time I wanted to buy an American car, he used it for a couple of months, then just left it in his drive for years to rust away, bloody criminal.

Mazda MX5. For years I had people movers to transport the kids around and when they no longer wanted to come for days out with us I went back to something small n sporty. I love it, and being strictly a 2-seater it has the added bonus of not being able to give friends lifts

That's a shame, well I put an old school mate on to a white 1973 Dodge Charger, he drove it for about 18 months then just left it in his drive, been there now about 10 years, we've all been round but he just won't sell it.

Drive a Hyundai I30 as it had a great warranty and just goes on an on. Had it two years now and love the Ipod socket as it means that I don't need to carry bagfulls of cd's.

For fun I've got a Yamaha FJ1200, brilliant fun.

"Just don't like them, sorry.

Makes a good old fashioned petrol engine look fantastic! ohhh don't get me started on the bloody dpf....more hassle than they are worth i have found out this week especially "

That is what happens if you buy a cheap diesel! I had a BMW330D and a 320D and both ran without a fault for many, many miles! The power delivery was almost instant from low down the rev range and forget 0-62 times, they both had great drivability!

Both were very comfortable and both very frugal. 47mpg from the 330 and 54mpg from the 320..

However, as a stopgap measure, I bought a Jaguar x-type.. Engine is good and suspesion set-up so much better than the Mondeo.. BUT... It used that stupid, Ford designed EGR valve which causes so much trouble... As I said, don't buy a cheap diesel! (And VW's are particularly bad for the DPF problems!)

ive got friends who spend a huge chunk of their earnings on luxury cars and I just cant justify it on the salary I earn (which is pretty high considering my age but certainly nothing to brag about)

they cant move out of their parents houses because they have a range rover etc sitting on the driveway!
