I have a yogurt based pro biotic drink each morning and plenty of veg for lunch or dinner, also found taking cherry tomato's, celery sticks or carrot batons as a snack instead of having crisps or sweets to munch on has improved my diet no end.

one of my friend's dad actually invented the marketing term 5 a day and subsequently became a millionaire. It makes me doubt how substantial the science behind it is. I assume his firm saw a doctors report recommending people eat 5 portions of fruit and veg and then they just marketed it well to the NHS.

It's really easy to get in your 5 a day and you probably do it without even realising.

One portion is whatever you can hold in your hand. i.e Guy big hand big portion, lady medium etc and child smaller is the correctr portion size.

Remember fresh, frozen, canned, or dried all count. A glass of juice also counts but no more than one a day.

So if you had say grilled tomoato with breakfast or even a glass of juice that's one or two, a peice of fruit mid morning, salad with lunch or in a sandwich, peice of fruit or handful of dreid fruit mid afternoon and vegetables with dinner.

Mushrooms and baked beans count. Potatoes do not.

Easy peasy.

Probiotc drinks are good for all sorts of things espwcially good to take when on antibiotics to prevent antibiotic associated diarrhoea but it wouldn't count as one of your 5 a day.

I read recently that 5 a day is the minimum for a healthy diet. Recommended amount is actually 8 to 10 portions a day, with 80% being veg and the rest being fruit. Thats because fruit, although very yummy and nice, has high sugar content and can raise insulin levels, thus making people hungrier after the sugar crash.

Which is a shame because I really don't like veg, but love fruit. However, if you chuck carrots and spinach into a spag bol it cooks down into the sauce. Or grated apple on a weetabix or muesli livens it up a bit. Little and often works better than a plate of steamed cabbage a night with me.

I find it odd that one glass of juice counts but the second doesn't? Another reason why I don't think its an exact science.

It was a Department of Health initiative so they would have commisioned the marketing.

It's beacuse juice is good for and you will get nutrients from it but you don't get the whole fruit and all the fibre which keeps our bowel healthy and hopefully cancer free.

It also contains massive quantities of fruit sugar but again without the fibre which helps our body use the energy for long term so bad news for potential diabetes.

Central

I'd say it's fairly easy to get the 5 a day, and I find it especially easy in summer, when I eat lighter stuff etc, to go way beyond 5 a day.

As some have said - if you take tons of fruit juices, they all largely are said to be just 1 of your 5 a day, no matter how many/much you've had.

The probiotics is something I wait to be convinced of - anecdotal reports are not lab controlled scientific evidence, and this £multi-million market is rich enough to fund appropriate trials, whilst leeching us of our money.

The only drink/yoghurt like that that I would take would be the cholesterol lowering sterols, where there is proper evidence for their results - but these are not bacteria culture drinks.

"I find it odd that one glass of juice counts but the second doesn't? Another reason why I don't think its an exact science. "

I usually drink about a litre of fresh orange juice a day. The carton says one glass is one of your five so I drink the whole carton. There thats my five as far as I'm concerned. Do I feel any better for it? Actually, yes I do. My stomach feels less bloated and I have more energy!

And its supposed to be 5 different things, not 5 oranges or 5 handfuls of carrots....

Chocolate is a vegetable: chocolate is derived from cocoa beans. Beans are vegetables
