I’m pondering on buying a new car.

Does anyone on here work for a car main dealer ?

If so, can u share any inside info regards whether you know if main dealers are going to be offering large discounts that they wouldn’t normally offer in a effort to kickstart sales again when they re open showrooms ?

I've been reading up on this and its all down to supply and demand. If dealerships have more demand than supply (poor stock replacement due to factories being closed during lockdown) then incentives and discounts will be reduced.

In the short term sales people may simply want to make a deal for commission purposes.

I would say do your homework but be prepared to move quickly. Or watch the market and particular dealerships across the country as I'm sure not every dealership will be affected in the same manner.

A mate was bored 3-4 weeks ago and emailed a few fork lift truck companies as his was on it's last legs/wheels.

The prices he was offered were ridiculously cheap compared with when he looked pre covid.

No idea if he'd get those prices now that things look a little bit more positive compared with back then.

I think they must have had stock and just wanted rid of thinking this could end in a big recession.

No idea if cars will be similar but there's normally a deal to be had especially if you use online companies not just your local dealer.

Near Taunton

There will be stock sitting in car pounds all depends on make and model etc how keen they are to shift them. There will be dealer pressures and manufacturer pressures that will dictate price

I bought a soft top merc from new 2 years ago in September so going into winter. List price £37k I paid £24.5k. You buy soft tops in winter and 4 x 4 in summer.

Search about there is a V. Good new car Search site called Car ... ( since not allowed to advertise) second word has similar meaning to gosh. Good luck deals are out there.

I enquired on a new car literally weekend before lockdown and was offered less than 1% discount. And it wasn’t a cheap car. I would usually buy used but wondering whether there will be enough of a deal to buy new for first time in my life

If you've decided on the make and model then do your homework online. If you can save a lot more 260 miles away , you'd travel, but this knowledge may give you the same discount locally by informing the local dealership. When I got my little car, I got the discount I wanted this way, as the dealer could check.

Admittedly my car was 17 months old but had the 7 years kia warranty as an Approved Kia.

Have you looked at the different contract offers instead of buying it, appreciate you don't usually own it at the end but some great deals if you don't do big miles.

I have a company car but I don't think i would ever buy brand new with the depreciation etc

Good luck with what ever you decide to do though

I bought one last November, it was pre registered and delivered to the dealership, officially I'm the second owner but it only had 200 delivery miles on it, cost about the same as some two year old cars of the same spec

Not sure about new cars, they are a slightly differant proposition, because the the car isn't registered it doesn't age so to speak.. But with used cars, dealers will be desperate to get them shifted. Cars that have been sitting for a while are termed interest bearing, meaning the business is paying interest on the money it cost yo buy the vehicle in, the car is so's depreciating in value, the longer it sits, the older it gets, the less it is worth.. And there are hundreds of thousands sitting on four outs just wasting money. Also the businesses may well sell at a loss just to get cash coming in. Find a few cars you like, make stupid offers, walk away and wait for the phone to ring

Wow, a third off list price. Good negotiation. Buy for me and give you a commission

No one is really open yet so it will be a hard market to call. New car deals will be driven by the the manufacturer and stock levels. Some will want to catch up so new cars could and should be strong. As for used cars the prediction is it could be a busy start post the easing of restrictions. So only those desperate dealers with give away profits that they have been missing for 3 months

It doesn’t make financial sense to buy a new car even with a large discount, you are putting 5-10 in some smarmy salesman’s pocket and another 5-10 on the tarmac as you pull out. You should rent depreciating assets and own appreciating assets

Half the country on furlough, economy on its ass..? The only people suggesting a boyount restart are the car dealers trying to build some demand.. There will be a few people with money and in a reasonable position looking for deal, but that's it. Same as 2007, it'll take 3 years minimum to get back to any reasonable level

FYI Hertz has just declared bankrupcy.

There will be a glut of well serviced second hand vehicles on the market soon.

It's a shame that this discussion is based on other people's misfortune. However as we cannot affect the larger outcome it's shrewd to look at the opportunities as they present themselves.

Even in a depressed market ppl still need to change their cars especially if they are in a pcp. 3yes ago was a bumper year for PCP so logic denotes the next 18mths will still see a demand. Used car prices haven't really changed yet but enquiries and demand is still out there. Everyone needs positive thoughts to bounce back in all walks of life. Never be a glass half full life

Wrong!

It was only Hertz in the US, not over here

Feel free to import a left hooker though

You are right.

US only. Somehow I don't think that there will be a long tail though...

Agree and maybe avoid the dealers. Try a specialist (one that only sells a specific make of car). For servicing, see reviews on social media. I am saving a lot by avoiding dealer servicing and going to a local garage with a good reputation.

Sometimes it’s just as good to buy a year old car as the price will drop as soon as a brand new car rolls off the forecourt, sometimes by up to £5k to £10k

It will depend on if the car is in stock and they need to pay for it. Try a few and you may get lucky and get a good deal.

It would be worth trying CarWow. Dealers respond to your requests for quotes so it can save you a lot of effort.
