I’m a bit of a vampire movie fan.. so come on folks which vampire film is the best.. and why?

Mine is The Lost Boys

That movie couldn’t be any more 80’s if it tried.. awesome cast, great villains, no CGI.. and the vampires don’t glow when sun light hits them!

Dracula 2000... good shout, it’s a very underrated movie.. it’s a modern day version of bram stokers Dracula.

30 Days of Night and

Bram Stoker's Dracula.

My new favourite is the remake of Fright Night with Colin Farrell, Toni Collete, Imoven Poots, David Tennent and Anton Yelchin. The cast lists makes you think it will be all over the place but it is good. With (spoiler alert) one of the female cast definitely on my list of top ten female vampires (see my thread from last week).

That said, nothing vampire related has been as good as Dracula, from this January.

Dusk Till Dawn as it's got humour and most of the film isn't concerned with vampires anyway. I always found the vampire thing a bit silly, and took itself far too seriously. Vampires are to the horror genre, what Batman is to the super hero genre. I much prefer zombies.

The lost boys.

We have walked over the bridge they hung off, north of LA.

Also been to santa Cruz and the airwalk, carousel etc are all still there, including the fibreglass caveman on the airwalk.

The guy whose comic shop they filmed in still runs a comic shop there too, they have the original comic from the movie up on the wall and if you ask nicely will let you take a photo with it.

Dracula with Gary Oldman is a very close second & Interview with a Vampire is excellent too.

And there’s always room for the Hammer House of Horror films

Have you seen The Originals? Definitely worth a watch, best vampire series in a long time! Netflix has it

He was so bad.

I saw a programme on the making of the film

Despite it being directed by Coppola they still needed a big name attached to the film to get the studio support. Keanu was the price paid (stated in a less direct way in the programme). Reeves was not 'sh#t' just did not hold his own amongst the other solid actors.

Somewhere In The Ether…

Not a film (although there is an edited down version) but the original Salem’s Lot starring David (Hutch!) Soul.

It was slow paced but the tension gradually built up delightfully (as did the creepiness factor) as the vampires gradually take over the small town.

Barlow, the head vampire is probably the second scariest looking vampire ever to grace the screen to (Max Shrek in FW Murnau’s, Nosferatu, perpetually occupying the number one spot) and his very sudden introduction is highly memorable, as are the scenes of the floating vampires scratching on the windows whilst enticing their victims to let them in.....

Another forgotten classic, Vamp, starring Grace Jones no less.

It’s a glorious eighties horror/comedy in the vein of John Landis’s, An American Werewolf In London and equally mixes gore with laughs (and for anyone who has seen it, is it just me, or is the lead a dead ringer for a young Mel Gibson?)

The sequel.....whilst not a patch on the original is still quite fun.

The remake wasn’t bad also and featured a nice little cameo by the original Jerry Dandridge himself, Chris Sarandon.

It’s a horror/comedy with the sumptuous look and feel of one of Hammer Studios many wonderful outings in the genre.

The late Klaus Kinski was brilliant in that remake, playing the titular character in a more sympathetic light.

He actually returned to the role in a semi sequel called, Vampire In Venice which, whilst not without it’s faults, was rather interesting nonetheless and carried a curious dreamlike quality to it.

Also be sure to check out, Shadow Of The Vampire starring Willem Dafoe and John Malcovich which is based on the original Nosferatu movie from 1922 but with a twist in that Dafoe who plays Max Shrek, the actor who plays the original Nosferatu is a genuine vampire(!)
