After a thread about holidays abroad and how these may not be possible...

I thought perhaps people could give their best ideas for holidays in the uk ( once we can obviously)

So recommendations for sites with lots of archeological stuff for me?? Where would you recommend. I've been to many of the stone circles in the UK. I love ancient ruins and adore old churches.. and well anything historical.

But advise doesnt have to be for that. As others may like beach holidays etc

A wonderful gentleman here took for for a car ride in Devon. The landscape and moors were magnificent and the pasties to die for. I’m still waiting for my invite back again...

Shrewsbury

Shropshire is a big beautiful county (BBC?) and we have the Wroxeter Roman city, Oswestry Iron Age hill fort, Stokesay fortified manor, Mitchell's Fold stone circle and many castles and churches (Church Stretton has a sheela-na-gig to stay on topic to this site) as well as more modern attractions, museums and hills with wonderful views.

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest

As an outsider who's seen a large part of the UK, a few places really stood out.

Loch Lomand. Absolutely stunning. Inverness / loch ness, Edinburgh, Stirling, Oban, Glasgow, Orkneys...basically all of Scotland

Western wales; Pembrokeshire and the north welsh countryside from Snowdonia to the english border.

Derbyshire countryside with it's charming local pubs. East Sussex countryside / Ashdown forest. Bristol, London, Manchester, Liverpool all brilliant cities with so much to see. No lack of choice!

The archaeology in Chester is fantastic. Hadrian's wall in many places. Bath. You'll have no shortage of Roman or medieval history in a lot of the country, building on ancient religious sites and traces of all the civilisations until the present day.

It's perhaps an obvious choice, but I full on cried the first time I saw the Parthenon Marbles in the British museum. It's quite difficult to put into words. And I found myself sounding out the inscriptions in other parts of that exhibit (the typographical and spelling conventions ancient Greek is written in these days are Byzantine, and the stuff preserved from the time is more challenging) and being stunned to find myself face to face with a bust of one of my favourite ancient writers. I can't quite put it into words.

But I have to vote for the far north of Scotland (Inverness and above)

Love the north east - castles, Hadrian’s wall, holy island. Wales - gower peninsula and Tenby for beaches! Peak District... so much to explore in the uk , haven’t even started with Scotland and Ireland

Definitely have a look at going to the Orkney Islands you won't be disappointed and if you want a break from archaeology you've got whale and dolphin watching trips (right time of year you can see killer whales from the land)

Would be pretty much anywhere in Scotland, away from the cities, and its just gorgeous, Some really great coastlines, pretty much all the way round, from Berwick, up to Aberdeen, round again and back down through fort William, fort Augustus, Down towards Oban and the Clyde Coast

Torquay has many churches, exeter cathedral not far and many beaches but mainly pebble, studlands soft white sandy beaches, wiltshire stonehenge and another smaller rock formation near it

Torquay in Devon Or Newquay in Cornwall.

both have many places nearby to visit, but my favorite is the nudest beaches, just a few miles away from the town centres.

Of course, then there the bars for a drink after..xx

I did LEJOG a few years ago and spent 10 days on a bike, which is by far the best way to see the UK!

Favourite places en route were parts of Cornwall & Devon, the Lake District (Wastwater is my fave) and large parts of Scotland. I'd say Glencoe is my favourite though, utterly stunning even when it's sleeting in June!

At some point I plan on driving along the West Coast of Scotland for a week and playing a bit of golf at courses where you can just rock up & play. Followed by evenings in local pubs rehydrating.

Wales - shitloads of castles.

South Wales also has the amazing Welsh Folk Museum at St Fagans.

Got Roman ruins at Caerleon (South Wales)

And South Wales is just amazing in general really.

Cheltenham, regency spa town, birthplace of Gustav Holst ( birth place museum), theatres , easy access to Cotswolds, Hailes abbey and other historic sites inc Sudeley and Berkeley castles, Chedworth Roman Villa, Gloucester Cathedral, Norman abbey at Tewkesbury, all on the doorstep

I absolutely love Yorkshire. Google their attractions. Spent my birthday last year touring all over Yorkshire. This year me and house mate having afternoon tea in the garden. No friends

Have been lucky enough to work in a number of places around the North of Scotland

Some beautiful places and scenery and very friendly locals

So seeing as their will be no foreign holidays this year I fancy a week travelling up north

Visited Loch Ness way back in the early 90s and would love to back

We love exploring the UK and agree with all suggestions above.

I would add Cambridge to the list interesting and historical but small city.

If you like cities, I would recommend Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow that haven't had a mention.

North Yorkshire has lots to offer.

I am currently planning a trip to the Yorkshire Dales/ Nidderdale.

Beautiful countryside, pretty villages, waterfalls, caves, old houses, churches and lovely ruins.
