There is a freedom which land does not give.

Dislike pools though, they are often disgusting. Open water or rivers is where it is at.

A few......I can’t hold my breath underwater; no matter what I do, water just goes straight up my nose. Consequently I hate having my face underwater unless I’m breathing out (whilst swimming) and I have no desire to wear one of those daft nose clips.

I never figured out how to dive, mostly because of the aforementioned.

I just really don’t like doing it....I get nothing from it at all.

I hate swimming. My PE teacher at school had this long bamboo pole. I think it was to stop someone drowning.

He used it to push the weak swimmers under the water. Me included.

It worked though within a few weeks I was doing tumble turns , breast stroke backstroke ,butterfly. I used to swallow half the pool.

He was firm but fair. I quite liked him.

Apart from the semi drowning.

Put me off swimming though.

I cannot swim.

I'd a bad experience at age 8, when I went with all my classmates from school, to the local Council Baths in Croydon, Surrey.

The instructor's style was to shout loudly at every pupil, & I recall his first lesson so vividly. We weren't allowed water wings, as he said they were for "babies, not children".

Then he held a long pole 6" under the surface of the water, the pole at right angles to the poolside.

We'd to duck under the pole to go from one side to the other; this was to acclimatise us to water.

It created terror amongst quite a few of us; when we didn't comply, we were made to sit out the rest of the lesson, whilst he berated us for being wimps!

There were complaints about him; after an enquiry, he was dismissed.

Swimming instructors have said since his attitude was wrong on all levels.

I get scared in water & must have both feet on the floor, otherwise I panic.

If anyone has any tips on how to prevent calve cramps. Depending on how fast a swim I can do about a length and a half before cramping up.

Having to swim back to shore or the pool edge with cramps in both legs is no fun.

Iyou know its nothing to do with not being a good swimmer, getting into difficulty, you can get into trouble with both feet on the seabed , , sometimes if the beach is shale, as you climb out , the pebbles give way beneath your feet, and if there is a swell, you get thrown about but dont seem to make any progress out of the water, , sometimes its cold water shock sometimes its a rip, anyone can find you wanting to get out but unable .

I broke my collarbone in three places and three ribs a few years ago, three weeks after that , we had a two week holiday to sharm el sheik , during which id promised myself id go scuba diving, but due to my injuries , i wasnt allowed to use and aqualung, , feeling left out,i decided to go anyway and just use a snorkel, Honestly it was the best decision i ever made , as we saw sharks , rays humingous groupers and puffa fish, angel fish of every size and colour, parrot fish trigger fish , and a flippin sea turtle came slowly cruising by , only a couple of feet away , which was the absolute crowning moment of the whole fortnight, id recommend it to anyone, /regardless of your level of proficiency, stick a pair of fins a mask and and a snorkel and stick your head under the surface of the red sea, its unforgettable!

Somewhere over there

Love swimming; did lifesaver courses when younger. Had to start off with ‘swimming for the disabled’ as I’m Deaf and therefore can’t hear instructions without hearing aid.

I’ve swum in the sea as well; it’s pretty bracing but never underestimate the current.

LOVED diving (not from high board, just from poolside) and spent many happy hours during family camping holidays in France using the pool. Very few places allow it now.

I love the peace of not having to listen swimming gives me without my hearing aid and definitely missing it during lockdown; as someone said earlier, it’ll be hard getting back onto it but it’s great for overall body workout. I’d do about 45 mins with a combination of exercises and lengths of different strokes (can’t do butterfly as I was never taught it)

I've been swimming 3 times a week since July (until lockdown of course...I'm really missing it now!) but previously hadn't swim for ten years after getting stuck in a riptide off the beach in Barcelona - it completely freaked me out and I still have a fear of my head being underwater.

A lovely fab friend was helping me get over that so I could start relearning front crawl and not just be doing breaststroke all the time. I look forward to getting back on track with that (also the rewards for achieving goals were great )

I have been able to swim since a kid but my technique was crap. I had to keep my head above the water. A few years ago I had lessons and learned to do the front crawl properly with breathing to the side and all that.

I can't to the breast stroke to save my life (yes I've already thought of the innuendo). I just can get my legs to do anything useful.

I find swimming for fitness gives really good results but it's mind-blowingly boring.

a quandary, could you change my mind?

Like swimming and preference would be a warm sea. Normally with goggles as I find my eyes are so sore afterwards if I swim without.

Really enjoyed a PADI course I did although having to return home early meant i couldn't finish it.

i never learned to swim because in 1971 a child at my great uncle's caravan site went missing.my nan and volenteers went looking for him. He was found caught up where the fishermen catch the salmon in the river wear after falling in the river. I remember my nan telling us. It scared me to not go near water. And i loathed the swimming pools at school. A half-cousin's husband also drowned when he was fishing.and he could swim.i wont ever learn.

Love swimming in the sea the higher salt content gives you more Bouyancy, especially a nice hot location with Cristal clear waters.

And so much more picturesque than the bottom of a pool.

I do have family members whom can’t swim, but not from fear. They’ve just never been taught.

It depends on your childhood I suppose. If you grew up near a swimming pool/beach and your parents taught you at an early age you can swim. Like everything else, new skills are harder to learn the older you are.

I like being in the pool but was never a strong swimmer.

Due to a neck issue I can no longer swim without a noodle under my arms so I tend not to bother.

My daughter can swim but doesnt enjoy it. My son is petrified of swimming pools. I used to take him once a week but I think the loud, echoing sounds frighten him too much so we stopped going. It's very difficult to swim with your hands over your ears the whole time.

I can swim but am better on land .. I always had a healthy fear of open water. I still love to jump into the sea or into a lake or river. The fairy pools in Skye are one of the best wild swim spots. I even tried diving.

I overcame my fears snorkelling in Greece surrounded by hundreds of apricot coloured fish one day. The experience was so profound and beautiful that I kept going back every day to meet them and just got more confident.

I also nearly drowned in some freak waves that took 3 of us one day!!

As Dory says ... 'just keep swimming'

Yes, I don't do it that often unless I'm on holiday where I'll spend hours out at sea snorkeling, but my parents made me go to swimming lessons from being around six years old and I wasn't allowed to stop until I'd got my 200 metre badge.

Adults can be the hardest age range to teach because of the reason you explained.

Children generally have no fear of water just a short concentration span.

I found thats once adults got used to having their face / head under the water and learnt aquatic breathing. It becomes much easier. Your head is the heaviest part of the body,

When your head is upright When in the water your legs will sink making it much harder to float and swim.

Being streamline in the water is key.

Sadly I had an ex who neither learnt to swim or ride a bike. He came from a pretty disadvantaged background with an abusive father. It shocked me when I found out as we went to school in the same area and we had mandatory swimming lessons in school. Turns out it's too late by then as he was so embarrassed to be one of the few kids that couldn't swim that he didn't even try to learn.

Mr can swim like a fish, Mrs is terrified.

I’ve tried to teach her for over 20 years and we have even given her professional swimming lessons. She got to I think it was 10-20 metres and then she quit as was panicking.

Thankfully we have the kids getting straight in! I’ve taught the son to swim and my daughter is eager to learn but can’t take 2 young kids in the pool at the same time without 2 adults.
