A world of my own

My laptop is ready for the knackers yard, so I'm looking to either get a new one or maybe a netbook. I can't decide. I can take a netbook on holiday easily but it has no disc drive.

By the way I don't download games, films or anything like that. Just surf net, emails and photos. Can you skype on a netbook?

Help please!!

Most of them have webcams so yeah skype is no problem. Like you say, the big difference is a disk drive. You can get USB disk drives pretty cheaply though, so unless you actually need to use disks on the move it's not a problem. Never bothered me about mine! Battery life is a big plus too, mine's about 12 hours or something silly.

Try the new i-Pad.....I recently brought both a new Dell laptop and an i-Pad and find the i-Pad great to carry around on my travels.

I'm on a budget at the moment so an ipad is a bit out of my price range, that's why I'm thinking netbook, just need to know how reliable they are and how many photos can you store on them too!

a seperate disk drive can be obtained for only a few quid, so netbook and external drive would get a bit of a thumbs up from me.

If you:

- don't want to type comfortably

- don't want decent 'mouse' buttons

- don't mind scrolling your screen all over the place

- don't want a CD/DVD player

- don't want a fast processor

- don't want loads of memory

then get a netbook.

if you don't feel like springing for a laptop and reckon a netbook's not good enough, get a notebook. My acer aspire 5732z is technically a notebook but had laptop-grade specs at the time, has an optical drive and runs very nicely - no camera on that model though.

Don't under any circumstances get a Sony Vaio notebook, as a tech support guy I can tell you when those little bastards fail, they fail hard. Give us a rough price range and I'll take a look around for you
