I've just heard on the radio that there remaking Scare face. This is a film in my mind that shouldn't be remade as it's a classic. So let's make a list of films fabsters that shouldn't be remade. I will kick off with:-

Scare face IS a remake. It's a remake of a 1932 film.

Unless that is the film you are talking about?

As I don't agree then. The remake was much better

The Wickerman. Classic british horror movie starring Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward and Britt Eckland. They remade it with Nicolas Cage and it was shit. Ive not even seen the remake but just know it could never be anywhere close to the original.

Agree and I’d add any of the British comedy / thrillers that came out of Ealing studios (The Ladykillers, The Lavender Hill Mob), Hitchcock movies and alike, 12 Angry Men, I could go on

What makes these movies is the actors, the suspense, the music and using your imagination unlike modern movies with their CGI

Cinema Paradiso there was talk after its Oscar an American remake with Macaulay Culkin from home alone film playing the young boy.

To be honest any subtitled film e.g Funny Games or The Vanishing (ruined the ending)

In general, most classics which do not depend on visual effects should be left untouched as there is nothing to add.

Most Kubrick movies should be left alone. But if someone wants to remake the Space Odyssey, I would be fine with that as it could be made more beautiful with modern technology and it would be a great way to increase reach of such deep movies to the next generation.

A lot of films that get remade just have the same name but a slightly different take on the original and I think that can be ok.

The A Team

That's just a few films that I actually enjoyed and thought were good remakes.

Apt of older films end up with sequels or prequels 20/30 years later....that's just a remake to me!

It's a genuinely interesting conundrum. Essentially Dambusters is not fiction, leads to the question should you rewrite history in order to make the film more palatable to modern day audiences?

In my opinion it's probably best to leave the dog out completely or at the very least not refer to the dogs by name, in audio or in credits.

Now I'm all for steve martin, the man is a comic genuis but to even dare suggest that he is in the same league as the comedy legend that was Peter sellers is an insult.

The man had unbelievable comedy ability and to make a walk on a treadmill in the dark funny will never be beaten.

Steve Martin destroyed every element of the remakes and not only should he have ever been cast, the whole thing should NEVER have been considered, let alone remade!!

Psycho 2 - just awful

Blues Brothers 2000 - awful

Jaws 3 - rubbish

Scarface is a remake already of a Howard Hawks film of the same name. Way better than the original though

Alien for me. They’ve tried to recapture the magic so many times and each attempt fails harder

Considering Hollywood hardly has any originality left in it I would expect a load of remakes over the next decade or so prepare to have some of your favourite films from the last 40 to 50 years brought kicking and screaming in to 2020's.

In Once Upon a Time in the West, Leone initially offered the part of Harmonica to Clint Eastwood, but he was no longer interested in working with him. James Coburn was next offered it, but wanted too much money.

The only remake that worked (in my opinion) was king kong, the 1933 edition was a visual masterpiece for its day, categorised as "Horror" it became an instant cult classic.... Then came 1975 and faye dunaway and jeff bridges..... And kong became a ridiculous laughing stock, awful acting, ridiculous directing and horrendous effects, cue 2005 and peter Jackson salvaged what remained of the disaster 30 years earlier to bring a reasonable attempt at giving a classic a degree of credibility

I think remakes can work, in a similar way to cover versions can work in music, but as with music it's when the remake is sufficiently "different" whilst remaining respectful of the original that they work best...

The Magnificent Seven is a good example - it took the Seven Samurai original and put it in a Western setting and put it's own stamp on it.

The recent Dad's Army film was another example - much as I gnashed my teeth when it was announced I was actually pleasantly surprised by it - it put it's own spin on the original, added respectful touches and stands its ground as a result.

Cape Fear is another that stands up to scrutiny as a remake

The Rob Lowe starring remake of Charade wasn't bad either

Basically..get some imagination film writers and leave the oldies alone because you ll never better them...oh and when using that imagination..try to remember to have a storyline..oh and less explosions, fancy stunts..keep it real. I mean the remakes of true grit and the omen films..it was pretty much new actors same original script.

Really? Hadn't heard of it till a few weeks back when someone was telling me about it and said it wasn't that bad - and being as Rami Malek (who's been great in most things) is in it as Degas I was going to give it a go - but maybe not now

Honestly i thought the same thing, how bad could it be... Its about a 13 on a 1-10 scale of bad.... It just absolutely doesn't do Steve Mcqueen any justice at all, its one of those that should have been left well alone, just like Ben-Hur cos that was god awful an'all.

I read the book after papillon called Banco. He drifted around the Caribbean finding odd jobs. Nearly got caught but escaped. He got settled with a woman. Not long after, all the prisoners were given amnesty/released by the French govt. He visited Paris again. Then took to writing the books.

I disagree with the Dambusters, for me, tales of real life bravery can always be retold.

I think it was Stephen Fry who said the ideal trailer for a new film, would start with a black screen and you gradually hear an engine spluttering into life, the screen would gradually, as the engine starts to make more noise, start to show the propeller and underneath ‘ The Dambusters’ maybe some of the music from the original film would then be played. Less is more perhaps

I listen to a lot of film podcasts and I think it was Peter Jackson they we’re talking about doing the remake. Stephen Fry was being interviewed as I think he was to be involved in some way. I know CGI would have to be involved but hopefully not too much. If it ever happens.
