Like half the nation, I am fed up and bored stiff, have not worked since mid March and am seriously considering getting a little job while am Furlonged...

Any ideas on a 'safe' job?

My background is office based admin PA etc... have no experience in retail aside from bar work!

You can take a 2nd job as long as the hours are outside your contracted hours of work of your furloughed job I think, the rules might of changed now

I think it's because whilst on furlough you need to be available to work if required too.

Yes you can work, not for the employer who has furlonged you... took this of the gov website..

If your contract allows, you may undertake other employment while your current employer has placed you on furlough, and this will not affect the grant that they can claim under the scheme. You will need to be able to return to work for the employer that has placed you on furlough if they decide to stop furloughing you, and you must be able to undertake any training they require while on furlough.

I had two jobs before this virus a full time week job and a weekend job, alas been furlonged from one as the weekend one was cash in hand... I am now struggling to pay the bills and put food on the table....

I too am on furloughed pay, but I've joined a local Volunteering Group which covers the area, assisting house bound people with shopping, collecting prescriptions etc and delivering it to the homes. Some of the team also call people who are self-isolating, to chat, see if they need any help etc, or live alone without any family or friends to support them.

You need to speak to your company to see if they'll allow you to take a second job. When I was furloughed it was made very clear that we couldn't take a second job unless already working an agreed one. Volunteering is permitted. At the end of the day your employer has the final say, and all applications would have to be in writing to your HR dept via your line manager.

Phone calls make such a big difference and have knock on effects for welfare, safeguarding etc.

Apparently a lot of furloughed workers have taken some positions working on farms which was on high demand a while ago. I think the regular overseas workforce is filling a lot of that demand for now. And with volunteering, I think the main scheme where hundreds of thousands signed up was being managed ineffectively so some have signed up and received no instructions to date. There might be local volunteering initiatives such as on Facebook which might be useful. Another idea, deliveroo or uber eats etc delivery driver. There has been a huge uptake since lock down.

I'm thinking local voluntary work. Manchester City Council email a list of opportunities, for example (obviously I know because I'm on the list), and my MP has done the same.

If you read further down the thread the op is asking as they need to boast their income. The only option is speaking to their current employer and asking if they'll permit them to take on a second employment. This usually isn't an issue so long as there's no conflict of interest, it's out of your standard working hours nor causing or going to cause you issues to prevent you carrying out your duties. An employer wouldn't be too please for instance, if you were to injure yourself in your second job and not be able to carry out your primary responsibilities.
