Does jealously have value in driving humans to improve themselves or is it a purely negative emotion?

Personally. I think envy is wanting/desiring something someone else maybe has. Like, wow I wish I had one of those or I wish my relationship was like that, but not in a “I wish you didn’t have that”’ kind of way. Whereas jealousy is more resentful and bitter. If that makes sense!!

There’s been an influx of Lamborghini’s driving through my town and also seen an F12 Berlinetta, I *think* one of the boys I know is opening his gym illegally and letting these out of towners use it cos I’ve seen them parked outside it.

Listening to these cars and seeing them I get jealous, it’s more than envy, it’s like fuck I wish I had that.

Motors make me feel jealous.

I had a relationship many years ago with a girl who played with my jealousy, using it to manipulate me. I realised through this that it was a weakness in me and I have vowed to never feel it again. It was a very destructive force and ultimately only made me feel bad.

I do still feel envy. There are always other people doing things and have things I would also like, but I also accept there are reasons I don't have them. If to achieve what they have I need to be more like those who have, then I probably don't want it after all. P

"Does jealously have value in driving humans to improve themselves or is it a purely negative emotion?"

Yes it does have value into people improving themselves.

Jealously isnt always a negative it can also be a positive,it really goes on who's jealous and to the extreme it's taken to and that goes on the person who jealous

But we are all human at the end of the day and jealously is a emotion like any other, so jealously can be turned into a positive like anything else

Envy can be a motivator.

Jealousy on the other hand can lead to sneaky sneak sneak behaviour and underhanded actions, where people show devious tendencies to get what they want, regardless of the destruction it may cause. In my mind it's where they put themselves at the forefront and screw everyone.

Jealousy is a huge umbrella term which covers a massive amount of feelings actually, most of them stemming from insecurities. But a nasty personality and jealous tendencies it's the perfect storm for a big ole clusterfuck.

We often say we're jealous, of food someone is eating or their new puppy when in fact we're not really.

The main difference between envy and jealousy is that envy is the emotion of coveting what someone else has, while jealousy is the emotion related to fear that something you have will be taken away by someone else. Neither are particularly attractive.

Very well put. I see envious as "oh, that's nice, I would like one of those", and can be a driving force to motivate you to get it.

Jealousy is more "you have that and I want it, so I'm going to do whatever I can to take it off of you"

Personally, I think it's a very negative emotion

Both jealousy and envy were considered Deadly Sins for good reason, as the story goes that Cain murdered Abel because God favoured Abel’s sacrifice over his.

Personally I saw envy damage my relationship with my younger sister, because she thought I always got favourable treatment from my parents. That envy has lasted nearly 50 years and is still there. So much so that she deliberately did things to hurt me and my relationships because of it. It nearly destroyed my relationship with my parents because I confronted her about aspects of her behaviour and she made up up a pack of lies that my parents bought to try to damage my relationship with them. They were always trying to make up for the favouritism she accused them of and believed her despite solid, witnessed evidence to the contrary. It took a long time to heal that rift and for them to see her from a different perspective and take off the tinted glasses. Thankfully I found a way to help the family relationships to operate in a more healthy way, but my sister still hasn’t forgiven me really, so it’s always a bit weird.

The French though use the term ‘Emulation’ which literally means jealousy or envy, but they use it often in a positive way as a process to inspire greater achievements by learning from the best. We see it so often in all walks of life from Sport, to how to handle Covid effectively, to how to develop yourself etc..etc..

So in that sense it can be healthy.

However our use of the words jealousy and envy are more imbued with dark emotional meaning.
