right i asked this on another thread but it got closed down before i got an answer

someone used [sic] in their post and i asked what does it mean as i have seen it in magazines too and always wondered so can anyone enlighten me as to its meaning?

It's usually written after a word which is a quote and may be misspelled. It means thus in latin, as in it was written thus but they are not sure it is the correct spelling.

I used to say to myself SIC = spelling isn't correct. That generally covers it. xx

Not only misspellings. It can be used after any word or fact quoted that is used but known to be incorrect.It denotes that the writer isn't the one who made the mistake

someone has cut and pasted a bit of text. they see an error - grammatical or factual - but dont want to amend the text, so they insert (sic) so the reader knows it was some one else who buggered up.
