"I had to smile at the thought of " authorities cancelling the summer solstice ". Maybe they could change the tide times too. " That won't happen although strangely the tides rise and fall at different times during the day and night. I learned this when I found a book that was actually a forecast of tide times and heights. I found that quite fascinating. There is a legend of King Kanute or Canute trying to stop the tide by royal decree. He actually got his feet wet so there is much more to this than meets the eye

"The summer solstice event as it is now was only started in the early 20th century by wealthy young people who would motor out in their cars, wear false beards and generally have a big party. There isn't any evidence that similar happened in BC times, and as druids were all killed off by the Romans and no written texts have ever been found, the current solstice celebrations have no reference in history." And it was revived by hippies in the seventies. The free festival then continued every summer until the early eighties when it was brutally suppressed by the Thatcher government. Watch a documentary called Operation Solstice on youtube and you'll see police brutality that you'd expect to see in China or south america.

I have to laugh at these self proclaimed 'Druids', wearing their historically accurate immaculate bright white robes. Who knew that Ancient Britons had access to Persil Whiter Than White... These seasonal changes are important to those who live with the earth as seasons dictate what is grown, what is available to eat ect ect ect celebrations can be seen around the world with indigenous tribes, we don't need written evidence of it, it still happens and is still celebrated.

"If you look at Stonehenge in the context of the ancient landscape in which it stands it takes on a much greater significance. If you then look at it in the context of Britain's archaeology as a whole it's incredible. There's evidence to suggest that people travelled there from all over the country for specific ceremonies. Just thinking about how people knew to do that in those days is fascinating" Absolutely. It's all contextual.

"It's just a few stones with no context.. nobody knows so we guess...probably built by the Victorians" Definitely not, it's one of the oldest calenders & back then before clocks & a calender in your wall/phone or computer these were used to accurately determine the season of the year beyond how the plants behaved & snow melts allowing them to plan their year, what to plant when, what was available to forage, when herds would migrate, so many uses that we take for granted today. Plain old stones they are not & placed there before the invention of the wheel.

"I think it's usually on a Saturday .. If the infection rate drops it could happen later in the year I don't know if you're having us on Tom. The summer solstice is usually the 20th or 21st of June and its the longest day. I think you know that though because I've seen you have this discussion before Yes but it can be moved.. and it has been suspended the solstice absolutely cannot be moved. The celebrations however can take place anywhere Yes that's what I meant.. move the celebration to a safer time" a bit like celebrating Christmas on February 12th though. I think anybody who genuinely wants to celebrate the solstice will do it somewhere safe on Saturday

"Big pile of bricks beside the road x It's really not. It's the best known prehistoric monument in Europe. I find it a very spiritual place. " Given your look and location. Shouldn't you be listed as one of the local attractions?

"So you’re disappointed that an event in a tiny place has been cancelled? You're thinking of the Stonehenge in Spinal Tap..." I think you're making a bit of a big thing out of this.... Making a big thing out of it would have been a fucking good idea!

"You can see Stonehenge from Imber village.. ? Great eyesight " I'm well aware of how big Salisbury plain training area is and how far Imber village is from Stonehenge, I didn't say I was watching it from Imber, I said I explored Imber while on the exercise, I was down there for weeks on Wessex Storm.

"It's just a few stones with no context.. nobody knows so we guess...probably built by the Victorians Definitely not, it's one of the oldest calenders & back then before clocks & a calender in your wall/phone or computer these were used to accurately determine the season of the year beyond how the plants behaved & snow melts allowing them to plan their year, what to plant when, what was available to forage, when herds would migrate, so many uses that we take for granted today. Plain old stones they are not & placed there before the invention of the wheel. " Well said that woman, there’s an eclipse on it this year too, though not visible in the uk

"And for what? The sun rises everyday.. Surely they could have staggered this sight over several days or weeks..." The summer solstice only occurs once a year, staggering it over several days or weeks is not possible. It's like asking people to stagger Christmas over several weeks except we mostly seem to nowadays

"It's like asking people to stagger Christmas over several weeks except we mostly seem to nowadays " It's more like saying it's too dark at night, we should move it to the daytime. Christmas and Easter are already celebrated on different days depending on which church you belong to. The confusion comes from there being three things that are being called 'solstice'. Solstice itself (strictly speaking, summer solstice, because there are two of them) is an astronomical event, which happens when it happens. It's always on roughly the same date, because it's one of the things the calendar is defined by. The exact moment can be at any time of day because there is no relation between the earth's rotation (which determines days) and its orbit (which determines the year). The second one is the celebration of the solstice. It is often observed at sunrise, so it usually won't correspond exactly to the astronomical solstice, although it will be on the same day. The third is the celebration at Stonehenge. Stonehenge is a popular place for it, because it's a very famous ancient monument, and many people believe it's (part of) what it was originally built for (I think it's much more likely that the important event back then was the winter solstice, but that's no reason not to have a summer event now. Traditions change, and new ones can still be significant). So - the celebration at Stonehenge was cancelled. It doesn't make sense to move it to another date, because it's tied to an event that defines the calendar. People who belong to traditions that celebrate the solstice were still able to celebrate it elsewhere. The solstice itself occurred just as it always does.

Surely the solstice is no different.. Celebrate it just before or or after has its advantages..
