I know I should not take the old wives' tale so seriously, but I have been seeing one magpie (not the same one) for the last week or so and can't help thinking that bad luck is just around the corner.

You're not alone. On my walk to the station each morning I see a magpie and I find myself searching for its mate.

It's the children's programme Magpie's theme song that runs through my head every time I see it: one for sorrow, two for joy, one for a girl, two for a boy.

Think the 'sorrow' in the song is supposed to be for the magpie not us..magpies apparently bond strongly, therefore sighting a single magpie could mean it has lost it's partner.

I think it's meant for us or the other bit 'three for a girl, four for a boy' etc wouldn't make sense.

Magpies are common as cat sh** these days though so I don't really pay the old rhyme much heed - maybe I should though, I've been having some crap luck over the last few years.

Everytime I see a magpie I always say "mornng mr magpie" (in my head...not out aloud !!)even if there is half a dozen or so of them. Someone told me to say this to ward off bad luck about 20 years ago and I have done so ever since !....lol

Around here it's not unusual to see 5 or 6 of them together - does that mean that they're swingers ?

Hate Magpies,mainly because I do the stupid thing of saluting them too and im a very well rounded individual........sometimes

One nicked a bag of hula hoops from my son when he was younger and having his lunch in the garden,was quite amusing to see it hopping along the grass with a bag of crisps in its mouth

I thought Mick Robertson was quite cute (think I was about 8 at the time....)

Loved the theme tune, specially at the end when it went "Maaaahaaahaaahaaaagggpie"

My neice is gonna make me a great aunt this year (I'm too young!) n Mam's been on the lookout for 3 or 4, but then my younger sister (Granny in Waiting) saw 3 one day and 4 the next so Mam's now convinced it's twins!

Oh and Mam's salute to the magpie is "Good Morning Mr Magpie, and how's your lady wife" - go figure!

last year we had a young magpie that hadnt fully developed its flight feathers and kept climbing up the trees to fly and land downhill so to speak..

other magpies were really so aggresive towards it - they sometimes ganged up on it as if they were trying to kill it.. we chased the others away at times..

hubby reckond it wouldnt have survived if we hadnt been chucking down some of our chicken feed for it....

we wondered when we hadnt seen him for a while ..

But he has been back this year he came back and actually stood on the garden table making a hell of a noise and once he had seen us he kinda stood proud and started flapping his wings for a bit before he took off into the distance...

Our killer cat finally got one of the pair in the back garden after weeks of patient stalking, watching, bush creaping and defending his food bowl. He sort of looked proud as the partner left looked about the garden where the murder was committed. On a plus side the nightmarish squawking has quietened down.
