Den of Iniquity

Not been myself but I know a couple who have been there several times .

And outside of Bangkok most things are really cheap .

A three course meal is around £2 and great street food is even less

One of my Fab friends is stuck there just now with no signs of getting back and very little money left. He had a great holiday but fed up now.

Last time I went it changed a lot, quiet locations had become very touristy. Vietnam and Laos are more likely to be less so.

It’s certainly got a bit more expensive the last few years but still cheaper than a European holiday.

We stayed in a lovely 2 storey suite right on the beach in koh samui, worked out about £80 a night. Can get rooms for dirt cheap though.

Local beers like Singha and Chang are cheap too but imported stuff is roughly the same price as here xx

Been a few times, work out your sensible daily budget and you can live accordingly to that.

Street food not restaurants, bars set back not on the tourist bit, local buses not tourist ones but these rules apply in most countries

There are cheaper times of the year and cheaper areas if you are looking to go as cheaply as possible.

No idea what will happen to flight prices after corona but if you get this wrong you'll pay a lot more than you could do.

When I last went the north was considerably cheaper than south.

Understand the travel cheap see the world backpackers(got the t shirt) but tbh I'd rather spend a bit more and have the holiday of a lifetime.

You'll certainly have time to plan at the moment !

Been many times , and was with family , was in Phuket , last time though was Christmas 2004 !!!!!!!!!

It was reasonably cheap, you can get good cheap accommodation, people are friendly and very helpful, and if you don't want to see the Seedy part of Thailand, you can totally avoid it ,,, plenty to do and see, I would totally recommend it when all this virus is clear

I've been twice, avoided the beaches and headed north to go trekking. Absolutely love it. Very cheap, far less touristy than the beaches and I'd highly recommend it.

Yes, I lived in Bangkok for 4 1/2 years but that was back in the ‘70’s before places like Pattaya and Phuket became touristy.

I’d love to go back and see where I lived, and the school I went to.

We stayed in Pattaya by accident. We went traveling one way ticket to Bangkok few nights then moved on. Pattaya was closest place with a beach. Shit hole seedy, dirty old man with young boys and girls.

Ko toa one of the islands was amazing though. Was a bit more expensive but still cheap compared to here. Didn’t really get on with Vietnam was good in parts but think we went the wrong places.

The islands are great, didn’t go much on Phuket way too touristy and developed for my liking. Found an island called Ko Mak it was literally abandoned but I loved it there.

Been to Phuket. Beautiful country and amazing food!

Places like Phuket are very touristy now, prices are higher than the more "native areas" but still cheap compared to the west. Our hotel we almost western priced and expensive for Thailand, but it was at the top end.

We'd recommend.

I went with my son 2 years ago now and loved the place. Best holiday I've ever had. I'd planned moving there but my life's changed massively now. Phuket was to busy and a liik seedy but it's an experience you have to have. Be very careful of pick pockets but on the whole Thai ppl and some of the friendliest I've ever met. Oh yes if you vape it's illegal over there which surprised me. You'll have a ball mate

With any travel do a bit of research before you go, I’ve been twice and visited a few places including Pattaya and Phuket. Tuk Tuks are a rip off and may take you to a factory tour where they’ll try and sell you a suit. Don’t believe anyone who tells you it’s a religious holiday so the site you wanted to visit is closed etc...

Bangkok is a pretty safe city even at stupid o clock in the morning, but you can always run into the wrong person.

I love the place and was intending to go to Vietnam in July via Bangkok but unfortunately that’s now cancelled.

Took the kids last year, 5 and 9. What a fantastic holiday. We did Bangkok, Chang Mai, Krabi and back to bangkok.

We got lost in Bangkok but walked down an amazing street of food stalls, cooked in Chiang Mai, and watched my 9yr old chat to market stall holders about their food.

Plan well, stick to your limit of travel. It is fantastic. Avoid tourist restaurants, eat from the markets or street sellers.

It is a great friendly place

Been to Thailand several times, travelling around by local trains and buses (although flying or Express trains would be quicker).

Always felt very safe on my own although I have had a couple of 'encounters'.

Went to Pattaya once, it was ok and if you want to experience the kind of sleepiness for which Thailand has a (mostly undeserved) reputation, that is one place to go. Similarly Patpong,Nana, Soi Cowboy in Bangkok or Patong (to a lesser extent) in Phuket.

The sea around the Andaman islands offers amazing scuba diving and snorkeling as does Angthong marine park off Samui.

If temples and buddha statues are your thing then Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai,up north, have lots to offer you.

Face masks are an absolute must in the cities. Never mind viruses, the pollution will make your eyes water.

Street food is amazing but, sometimes it's best not to ask what it is you're eating.

People are lovely and friendly and, even if they do sometimes fleece you a little bit,a lot of money to them is pennies to us so just pay the prices.

Some really good last minute deals on hotels in my experience.

For 'sleepiness', read 'sleaziness'. I didn't realise my phone was such a prude.

I visit Bangkok for three weeks every Christmas / New Year.

I’ve sent you a copy of a guide I have written for newbies by pm.

It costs me less than £4,000 in a three-star+ hotel. You’ll have a really great holiday regardless of how much you want to spend.

Fascinating place. Friendly people. Fantastic food. The North (Chiang Mai) is interesting, North East is off the beaten track, but Ubon Ratchatani for the Wax festival, for beaches Koh Chiang, Krabi and Trang; and of course Bangkok. Not as cheap as it once was, but still a great place to travel.

its good depending on what you plan to do.

it isn't as cheap as some would have you believe and with the hike flights will take and how strong the baht is and the weakness of the pound it's becoming more expensive right now a small beer will on avg be (domestic) £1.70 a lady drink £3.20 normal little cafe pork and rice £1.60 mcds bk or the us fast food chains run slightly less than home street food 60 p for fruit 60 70p per fruit portion quarter chicken piece £1.20 ferries next to nothing though the islands tend to be a little more expensive for food drink and activitys tattoos they will ask for more than uk price but you can barter down imo unless it's the experiance of bamboo your after organised tours expensive to follow an umbrella imo it's not worth it (if they do bamboo in a resort city they are usually more expensive) in short if you really want to go to thailand go for it you will love it but if your expecting to live like a king on a couple of quid steer clear

My hubby has been a few times with his mate & his daughter before we got married last Sept. He may well go again with his friend or his daughter. But before that we are planning a trip. Was hopeful to go for Christmas/New Year this year as it's a special birthday, however that won't be happening now i strongly suspect...

Anyhow i digress, he loved it, his mate loved it and his daughter loved it.....

Do it, no regrets

The most significant costs of visiting Thailand are the air fare and hotel costs. Flying is cheaper on Mondays and Tuesdays, as are indirect flights. The range of hotel prices is huge, ranging from super-cheap back-packers’ hostels off Khaosan Road, to super-expensive five-star super-modern skyscrapers.

Basic essentials are very cheap by our standards. They have to be, because the Thai national minimum wage is only about £8 per day. Bangkok factory girls get around £50 to £75 per week, and a very significant portion of that goes on rent.

Book only one or two days when you get there then book when in country, much cheaper and you can haggle on the price when in person especially if you flu there in their low season. I went in August.

Things can cost more in Thailand than in the U.K. Or they can cost less. Or both!

The main westerners’ red light district in Bangkok is along Sukhumvit odd side from Soi 3 to Soi 23, plus Soi 4. Between Soi 4 and Soi 2, there is an open marketplace where the Bangkonkers buy food etc. There’s another one at the other end opposite the entrance to Soi Cowboy, on Soi 21. If you shop in these markets, you will be ripped-off, maybe paying twice what the locals pay. But you will still think that the food is very cheap. However, if you buy the same food from the pavement vendors along odd side, you’ll pay maybe twice as much again. Ripping-off tourists is an international endeavour. If you buy western food from supermarkets like Tops near Soi 19, expect to pay about the same as you would in the U.K. If you buy meals in cafes and restaurants, they will cost as much as, or more than they do here. But if you eat local food at open pavement “cafes” with the locals, you will find that the food is very cheap. Make sure that it is piping hot and untouched by human foot.

A small lager in a go-go bar in high season may set you back a fiver including tip – enjoy the view. The same drink in an ordinary tourist bar will cost about half of that. You can buy a packet of fags in Bangkok for just over two quid. Here, they’re about nine. A prostitute for “one shot” will be about £25, compared with maybe £100 here. Many of the tourist-type sites rip us off. I always visit the Samphran Elephant Park. My girlfriend negotiates the entry charge. It’s about B1,800 for me, but only about B500 for her. Four hours on the road in the Dynasty Inn’ chauffeur-driven car costs about £50.

Taxis are a big problem, of course. They all have meters, but most refuse to use them. This is a reportable offence – in theory. My girlfriend does all of the negotiating, but still about four out of five will refuse to take us where we want to go. In Bangkok, try taking a trip on the Skytrain system – you won’t believe how cheap it is. But it stops running at midnight (except on New Years Eve), and you’re then at the mercy of the taxi drivers.

So, in Thailand, like many other developing countries, if you’re adventurous and live like a local, the costs will be very low by our standards. But if you want to stay in your “western bubble”, then the cost of things may well be similar to, or even greater than at home.
