Sparked by talk of consumerism earlier.

What are hobbies, skills, and entertainment you can do without needing to buy more stuff, or involve a relatively low level of consumption of things you already own? (I'm thinking of the artists among us, I'm not excluding them because they need supplies every so often)

Upcycling furniture can be a really low cost way of giving a room a new look.

Bit of paint, new handles and you are good to go

There are lots of free apps and YouTube videos to help people work on various skills and hobbies, for example fitness or learning a language.

I've recently restarted learning piano using the yousician free version of the app you get a limited amount of lesson time per day. The keyboard is one we bought for one of our kids relatively cheaply.

Yes. If you're online there are a million and one things you can learn with free or freemium material. Duolingo and Memrise are awesome for languages.

I already have all the musical stuff I need so it’s a cheap hobby for now but it cost a fair bit to get to this point.

I’m doing stuff around the garden using stuff I’ve already bought and repurposing it so that’s not costing anything either.

Writing song lyrics and music is free too although the stuff to record it well and mix and produce it cost quite a lot, but it was all purchased before lockdown

I'm working on languages, practicing singing, working on my fitness. I'm writing.

Playing with makeup is also applicable here because if you have the thing already, it takes an age to use it up. My very favourite eyeshadow palette, which I do use a lot, there are only small dents in my favourite colours

Oh and language exchange. Finding people who are native in X who want help with English and will swap you. Just need a smart phone and an app.

I'm using duolingo and an audiobook I got with a free Audible credit, there's also free duolingo podcasts on Spotify.

I like repurposing things in general. Want to make some outdoor bunting from old stained oil cloth (blinking spaghetti Bolognese) and then want to make a blind from old flour sacks I found in my grans house.

People who sew, knit, crochet and embroider can use up all the left over stuff from previous projects and the things they bought because they might come in handy. Or is that just me ? I'm starting to eye up plain pillow cases and tea towels to see if I can embroider them

Memrise has a wider variety of languages including user uploaded content. The user uploaded stuff can be hit or miss. There's overlap with Duolingo but it's not the same. I find Duolingo a bit childish but I still use it.

Would love to be more creative and make stuff like jewellery and furniture but for some if us we just don't have those skills. Not sure if these are hobbies but low cost stuff we do; hiking, wild camping / wild swimming, collecting firewood, feeding horses, cooking, bread making, qigong, herb garden, massage, Languages. Duolingo is good for beginners but Rosetta Stone is better later, also watch lots of french film and reading Harry Potter books in french

What about making a patchwork quilt from old t shirts/curtains? I've also seen one lady fill up her old jeans with soil and use them as planters. You could rip up old books and magazines you don't read anymore and papier mache a nice sculpture? Melt down all your half burned candles and make one super candle. Learn Morse code. Make youtube videos on hobbies you're already good at and teach someone else something new... Possibilities are endless!

Also there are many many free resources for learning how to program. Why not try your hand at coding and build yourself a fun little project like a simple game or a personal website. If anybody is interested in this I am a web developer and can give tips on where to start

My problem and I know it's a big failing of mine, is that I collect ideas then never act on them. If lockdown lasted five years I'd still never finish reading all the books I have waiting, all the sewing projects, the TV series I plan to watch

I do sew or crochet while I watch telly. I'm just one of those people who flit from one thing to another. I always have about three books on the go for instance and one or two sewing or crochet projects rather than just sticking at one until its finished. I'm too bloody old to change now

Hmm why don't you try and set time limits/deadlines on your projects? For example if I'm making something for a specific person I'll work through the night if I have to because of how much I want to be able to give it to them. I love giving presents though, especially handmade ones

OP I know you love makeup and beauty. Why not try out a really bold new makeup look and give yourself a makeover for a few hours? I'm talking bright eyeshadows and massive updos when I was younger me and my sister used to do this with each other all the time when we were bored, it's a really fun way to pass time with things you already have and you might even get inspiration for a new look

With one of my interests in mind, I've written short related stories for inclusion into hobby related magazines. Plus, I'm compiling a specific related longer article for inclusion in a future magazine issue.

I've also been putting a framework of ideas together for the book I intend to write, once I retire towards the end of 2021.
