I don't think its as black and white as that.

It doesn't matter what their interest is, if they keep going on about 24/7 its going to be boring. Its not exclusive to people who enjoy looking after themselves

Some fitness fanatics are boring some of the time.

To be honest it's the person not their fanaticism that is either boring or interesting.

Most of them are balanced, healthy goal driven people that I can envy in some respects.

Yes but it's the person that becomes addicted not the activity that's addictive.......

If they didn't become addicted to fitness they'd be addicted to something else.

Nowt wrong with keeping fit. It's the oft aloneness of the individuals participating.

Sure train alone sometimes out of necessity (like now) but a lot of solo trainees (before now) I don't get it myself.

I could talk about fitness all day long. I do find it interesting as a thing to learn about, getting to know my body better and how to improve it.

I have lots of interests and hobbies about which I could say the same. I don't know why this is bad.

I train alone, I prefer it, I've tried with a training partner and they usually give up.

If people ask I'll talk about it but dont ram it down people's necks.

I really don't give a shit what anyone thinks anyway, I compete for me and my own personal achievements.

I'm far from any kind of fitness fanatic, but I enjoy hearing about things other people are passionate about. As long as it's not used as a platform to make me feel crappy about my body (and actually, it's never those people who do that in my experience so far anyway).

Is it possible that people who do object to fitness fanatics are perhaps just a tiny bit envious?

It's not so much that they're boring but sometimes judgemental of people who don't share the same passion as them and try to "fix" them. It's like how some people get into relationships and suddenly start feeling sorry for single people and trying to set them up etc. If you want to look and feel the best you can that's great but don't judge those who don't have it as their top priority.

I get that. Although it definitely cuts both ways. I saw a meme today "these people talking about how many miles they've run, shut up and get pissed in the garden like a normal person". So... I'm not allowed to run or talk about my hobby?

I know what the word means. It's still subjective.

Some people will say that anyone showing any evidence of enjoying physical activity is a fanatic. Those open about enjoying exercise do get judged for it.

I'm asking where you draw the line. Am I a fanatic for joining and starting these threads (with the aim of including those who want to participate) and mostly ignoring those who mock them?

Not an assassination, more an opportunity for understanding.

I have learnt some things here about why people solo train and why they might have to solo train (dropout) training partners. Other interesting points have been raised too.

Some people don't like football that's never stopped me playing. I also have a Sister whose interest and knowledge of that sport has grown through being around her sons. A very natural type of growth which has been nice to see. Nothing wrong with influencing others.

Anyone who can only talk incessantly about one thing is boring.

I keep fit and go to the gym everyday. I don't talk about it though unless people want to.

Don’t you think there’s a line though at which they become self obsessed and lose any sense of empathy. I know guys refuse to cook and eat with their own family , insist on being in bed early and can only visit certain restaurants to the point they become unsocial, they breathe and live training and nutrition, won’t even run with us on a non-cardio day.

Sure. But fanatics like that exist in every hobby. Language learners who immerse fully in their spare time, so will only talk to you outside work if you can speak in their language. Obsessive train spotters. Makeup fanatics with five figure debt (am a makeup fanatic, have zero debt) and sneer at those who wear drugstore brands (not me). Etc.

False, there is nothing wrong for someone that shows true passion of what they like to do, it doesnt just go for fitness but to all hobbys, it shows that they are dedicated and one pointed, that is why only few percent reach their goals in their chosen field.

I am driven.

What I do I'm very good at and I had to sacrifice friends and relations for that.

I was not prepared to listen to fools and naysayers I put in the hours of training and met the pain head on.

Does that make it an obsession?.

Yes. Because the top step only has room for one person.

Me. Fuck the rest.

That's the harsh reality of it.

I’d put those trainspotters, make up fanatics and language learners in the same category. If it’s impacting your finances, stopping you interacting normally and the only benefit is vanity it’s an unhealthy obsession and makes you boring, that’s different to just being passionate. I’m passionate about experimental baking but I do it mostly through the night when everyone’s in bed, keep my yeasts out the way and won't prioritise it over seeing a friend.

It's depressing how some people insist on having a group to try and put down.

Truth is, anyone who won't talk about anything except one hobby is going to be boring, no matter what it is.

We should recognise that bad behaviours are the issue, not particular groups of people.

As someone who takes their fitness seriously I agree. I do a lot of training, but what I don't do is post daily videos on instagram of me picking stuff up and putting it back down again, or doing sets of lunges etc. I really don't get why so many do that. By all means post a progress picture every now and then if you've made some serious physical changes, but bore off with daily videos of you doing squats etc.

If it's all you can talk about, I'll find the chat boring after about 10 minutes. If you have an interest in multiple things and can talk about them equally, my interest will stay with you.

Having said all that.....if you want to be good at something, (sports wise), you need to stick to/focus on that one thing. Having a multitude of hobbies would interfere with each of them.

I would say I'm fanatical.

I spend a lot of time each week on meal prep so I'm eating what I should be.

I spend hours reading up on training methods and the science behind it.

I plan my training in 3 month blocks down to the finest detail.

All in the pursuit of what are now much slower gains in strength.

All of it together with the training is like having a part time job on top of my normal job.

If you want to succeed at a high level like I do then you have to be fanatical.

False, it shows dedication, it feels great walking around with a ripped physique knowing how hard you have to diet and train to get one, lots of tuna went into making it

Muscles don't make personality, if your a boring person, you will just look better but still be a yawn fest.

However you will attract a lot more attention and there's a hell of a lot of shallow people who just want to fuck someone with a great body.

Anyone that can only talk about one subject is boring in my opinion

If someone is keen on their fitness but are able to talk about a range of other things, then no, it doesn’t make them boring

True. But as are vegans, runners and dog people and all others who get obsessed about something and it's all they can talk about. So it's really the fanatics they are boring rather than the actual thing itself.

Not at all. I walk and sometimes run but not a gym bunny. Taking care of your health is never boring. Boring people watch tv whilst eating crap.

"why can't they run/cycle with friends"

"They have no friends"

No, I don't need to be with other people or have a chat to enjoy it.

Also hard to have a chat when you're puffing and panting in the wind!

Sometimes I go out to train and get fitter.

Sometimes I go out to explore.

Sometimes I go out to de-stress.

If people have a hobby, have fun and enjoy themselves why's it matter.

Plenty of other boring people in this world

Absolutely Huey

The question was a blunt dichotomy

The truth is absolutely not

Even to the point that if we change the word fanatic to passionate then many people who are passionate about a subject and can communicate well they will be fully engaging/inspirational

I'd also suggest it maybe simple to just dismiss an autistic as boring but its who they are

That was deliberate

My point being absolutely some humans just engage and entertain, yey fabulous

Not everyone has that talent or ability that does not mean they should be labelled with a derogatory term as boring

Xxxx

Any fanatic is boring if you aren't interested in the same thing at the same level.

I kind of disagree there

We are not born with an interest

Sometimes we discover our own passion

And sometimes we discover someone so passionate that they inspire us to become interested

X

Passion can be a positive infectious concept x

Agreed. Fanatic implies being obsessed with said activity that it occupies a large portion of their lives. Often makes for shallow and one dimensional people.

Absolutely where I was going with my comment. An interest is one thing. A passion even... but fanatic? That's a strong word.
